A delayed actuator mechanism (58) rotatably couples handle (54) to upper housing (62) to provide a lost-motion driving connection in a cap-removal direction (166) and a direct-drive connection in the cap-installation direction (164). Annular gasket (76) includes an annular outer seal (122), a hoop-shaped base (120), and a thin annular multi-directional membrane (124) interconnecting hoop-shaped base (120) and the surrounding annular outer seal (122).

    Abstract: A fuel cap (10) and filler neck fitment (14) for receiving the fuel cap. The fuel cap includes an outer member (18) and an inner closure assembly (20) with seal. The cap and fitment both include lugs (28, 36) which interengage when the cap is moved into a closing position to pressurize the seal determined by an improved overriding ratchet arrangement. During removal of the cap, the outer member moves against a spring action for a predetermined arc before the inner closure assembly is moved to disengage the seal. When the seal is disengaged, the spring action takes up the relative motion. Once removed, the cap is retained by an improved tether (74) assembly. The outer member is connected to the inner annular assembly by an improved structural arrangement which allows the outer member to separate under crash impact.

The skirt of the baffle includes at least one slot therethrough and the float valve is positioned to lie between the vapor inlet and the slot of the baffle when in both the opened and closed positions.

The hub includes a drive lug and moves between a lock position in which the drive lug is spaced-apart from the drive tooth and a release position in which the drive lug engages the drive tooth. An outer shell is also provided and includes an interior wall defining a guiding slot to receive the drive lug and guide movement of the removal hub between the two positions. The shell is drivingly coupled to the hub so that the member remains stationary upon rotation of the shell when the drive lug is in the lock position. The member rotates upon rotation of the shell when the drive lug is in the release position.

    Abstract: A method is provided for accurately determining the volume of gas that has leaked through and around a cap having a mouth and a seal situated about the circumference of the mouth. The method includes the steps of positioning the cap within a testing neck on a fuel cap testing apparatus, fixing the cap in the neck to create a general sealing engagement between the seal and the neck and to cause the seal to move into the neck, and "staging" the cap for at least 2.5 seconds. Staging refers to the necessary waiting period that must pass in order to allow the seal to complete moving into the testing neck. A test is then conducted for changes in pressure within the testing neck due to low-volume gas leaks through and around the cap.
