  • Patent number: 5059140
Abstract: A plug and jack connector for multi-conductor cable is provided with shielding to attenuate EMI/RFI radiation passing into and out from the jack and/or plug and an arrangement for grounding electrostatic charge carried on the cable shield. The jack is designed for insertion into a printed circuit board and includes a front housing part formed of electrically conductive material, an insulative rear housing part and a plurality of contacts having leads which are totally enclosed within the housing. The front housing part is the shielding member of the jack and is adapted to be grounded, such as by mounting on a chassis. The plug is of modular construction. Shield apparatus surrounds the plug to provide interference attenuation and extends into a cable shield terminating portion of the plug cavity to electrically engage a conductive ferrule applied around the cable which engages the cable shield to provide a path for grounding the cable shield.

  • Patent number: 4679878
Abstract: An insulation-piercing contact for terminating solid or stranded conductors in a modular plug connector, includes a flat body portion and first and second longitudinally spaced insulation-piercing tines, each of which has an inner surface adapted to electrically engage a respective conductor situated in a corresponding channel formed in the connector housing. The tines are transversely offset with respect to each other so that their inner surfaces are mutually spaced in a transverse plane through the contact a distance less than the maximum transverse dimension of the conductor. The distance between the inner surface of each tine end and an opposed partition wall of a respective channel in the modular plug connector housing in which the conductor is situated is preferably less than the sum of the diameter of the conductor and the thickness of the insulation surrounding the same.

  • Patent number: 4537459
Abstract: A jack for a modular plug connector which terminates an EMI/RFI shield surrounding the conductors of a cord, as well as the cord conductors themselves as is conventional, by which the electromagnetic and radio frequency signals radiated from the conductors and carried through the shield are grounded. The jack includes front and back parts connected to each other to define a rearwardly opening receptacle for a conventional multi-contact modular insert and a communicating forwardly opening receptacle for the modular plug connector. The jack is provided with a grounded contact which, upon insertion of the modular plug connector, electrically engages a shield terminating contact which forms a part of the modular plug connector to thereby electrically couple the grounded jack contact with the EMI/RFI shield surrounding the cord conductors.

  • Patent number: 4516825
Abstract: A modular plug connector is provided with a device for terminating the shielding of a cord to prevent or at least substantially reduce the radiation of electromagnetic and radio frequency interference from the region of the connector, such as when the cord is used in the transmission of high frequency digital-based data. The device also advantageously provides for the isolation and grounding of electrostatic discharge. The shield terminating device in one embodiment is constituted by a contact passing through the housing of the modular plug connector into the cord-receiving cavity of the connector housing so as to electrically engage the shield sheath of the cord.

  • Patent number: 4506944
Abstract: An improved modular plug connector is provided with a contact as a part of the connector itself for terminating the foil shield of a cord to prevent or control the radiation of interference-causing electromagnetic and radio frequency signals from the region of the connector, such as when the cord is used in the transmission of high frequency digital-based data. The connector incorporating the shield terminating contact also advantageously provides for the isolation and grounding of electrostatic charge. The shield terminating contact is constituted by a contact pin which passes through a side wall of the connector housing into the cord-receiving cavity to electrically engage the cord shield.

  • Patent number: 4330927
Abstract: Apparatus for automatically stripping and terminating wires in a continuous manner includes a wheel on which a plurality of insulated wires are located which is mounted for intermittent rotation in a stepwise manner for feeding the wires successively to spaced operating stations, namely to a stripping station where the end region of insulation is stripped from the wires and then to a terminating station where the endmost one of a strip of interconnected terminal contacts is located over the bared end region of the wire, crimped thereto, the terminal contact then being severed from the strip. The stripping station includes a pair of insulation cutters mounted on a cutter holder member which itself is mounted for reciprocating movement in the direction of the axis of the wire located at the stripping location and apparatus for actuating the insulation cutters while gripping the wire.
