  • Patent number: 4185791
Abstract: A device for preventing a belt from being pulled from a retractor comprises a clamp holder and a base member having closely spaced surfaces defining a gap through which the belt passes and from which the belt runs off forwardly at an angle away from the base member. The holder receives a clamp which has a gripping surface protruding slightly from the holder surface and, in part, defining the gap. The holder is pivoted on the base member, and the clamp and holder are spring-loaded about the pivot axis in a direction which holds the clamp out of engagement with the belt. An abrupt force tending to pull the belt abruptly forward through the gap forces the holder to pivot or rock rearwardly, thus engaging the gripping surface of the clamp with the belt. Forwardly oblique, transverse wedging surfaces on the clamp and clamp holder wedge the clamp tightly against the belt and prevent it from being pulled forward.

  • Patent number: 4094475
Abstract: An automatic locking safety belt retractor includes a belt take-up reel spring biased to rotate in a belt retraction direction and having affixed to its ends a pair of ratchet wheels. Normally retracted pawls are independently advanceable into ratchet wheel engage positions and a sensing mechanism concurrently advances the pawls. There is a phase difference between the relationships of each pawl with a respective ratchet wheel so that with advance of the pawls in the event that one coincides with the tip of a ratchet wheel tooth the other pawl engages the ratchet wheel between successive teeth. In one form the ratchet wheels are similar and have the same number of teeth but are relatively angularly displaced one-half of a tooth pitch and in another form the ratchet wheels have different numbers of teeth. The sensing mechanism includes a pendulum which, upon swinging, raises a cross piece eccentrically coupled at its ends to the pawls to advance the pawls.

  • Patent number: 4063777
Abstract: A vehicle shoulder safety belt retractor includes a first ratchet wheel carrying reel which is biased in a belt retraction direction and an oppositely oriented second ratchet wheel is mounted on the first ratchet wheel. A first normally retracted pawl is associated with the first ratchet wheel and a mechanism responsive to either highly accelerated belt withdrawal or the excessive acceleration or tilting of the vehicle or both for advancing the first pawl to lock the reel against belt extraction in emergencies. A second pawl is advanced by energization of an actuating solenoid to engage the second ratchet wheel and brake the reel against belt retraction. The solenoid is connected to a source of current through a series connected pair of switches, one of which is closed with the application of the seat belt and the other being located in the seat back and which is closed by the seat occupant reclining against the seat back so that the shoulder belt pressure against the comfortably seated occupant is obviated.

  • Patent number: 4058272
Abstract: An inertia locking safety belt take-up reel comprises a U-shaped bracket and a rotatable reel including side ratchet wheels and journalled between the bracket side walls. A rockable cross piece including pawl projections is supported between the side walls for movement into engagement with the ratchet wheels and is spring biased out of engagement. A clutch wheel is rotatable with the reel and frictionally rotatably supports a cooperating clutch annulus, the two clutch members pivotally engaging a pawl so that their relative rotation attendant to a rapid acceleration of the reel swings the pawl into engagement with a second ratchet wheel to rock the latter, which in turn rocks the cross piece through an interconnecting crank arm, to lock the reel ratchet wheels by the associated pawls. An alarm control gear is driven by a pinion rotatable with the reel.
