    Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing fixed telephony service in a mobile cellular telecommunications system is disclosed. In the invention a fixed subscriber is assigned a fixed area within a cellular system and may not move beyond the fixed area. The restriction on movement is accomplished by monitoring a location area identity (LAI), a timing advance (TA) value and a handover candidate cell list for the fixed subscriber. Monitored parameters are then compared with a fixed LAI, a fixed TA and a fixed handover candidate cell list to determine if the fixed subscriber has moved beyond the fixed area. If the comparison indicates movement has occurred, a violation signal is generated.

    Abstract: A generic communications network provides an encrypted communications interface between service networks and their subscribers. When communications are initiated between a subscribing communications terminal and the generic network, the terminal compares a stored network identifier associated with a stored public key, with a unique identifier broadcast by the generic network. If a match is found, the terminal generates a random secret key, encrypts the secret key with the stored public key, and transmits the encrypted secret key. The generic communications network decrypts the secret key using a private key associated with the public key. The secret key is used thereafter by the terminal and the generic network to encrypt and decrypt the ensuing radio traffic. Consequently, the network can maintain secure communications with the terminal without ever knowing the terminal's identity.

    Abstract: An error flag setting arrangement for a multitasking environment requires all of a multiplicity of processes to use the same funtion to set an error flag indicator. Inside of this function, the flag indication is tested prior to setting to a new value. If the flag indication is already set, the function waits a predetermined period of time. In the event that the error indication is not reset within the predetermined period a message describing the current value of error indication is displayed on the screen and the error indication is set to the new value.
