Publication number: 20080042373Abstract: A sealing apparatus adapted for use in a pressure vessel such as a synthesis gas cooler. The sealing apparatus is of a segmented plate construction formed around an outer wall section of a conduit means of the pressure vessel that defines at least part of a passage for receiving effluent from a gasification process. Pressure responsive mechanisms are provided on the plate segments to maintain the pressure difference across the sealing apparatus within the acceptable operating limits as well as to permit instantaneous pressure release to prevent damage to the pressure part assembly or cage. Collection scoop for flue gas desulfurization systems with bleed streams or ex situ forced oxidation
Patent number: 7294322Abstract: A scoop is used to collect a liquid slurry upstream of an internal collection tank. The scoop is in fluid communication with a downcomer, which receives at least part of the collected slurry, thereby maintaining a continuous flow of liquid slurry through the scoop to prevent plugging. Collected slurry can be removed for treatment from the scoop or the downcomer. In an application to a wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubber, the scoop collects an effluent slurry of partially reacted liquid scrubbing reagent and scrubbing byproducts before they drain into an internal reaction tank. Partially reacted liquid scrubbing reagent and scrubbing byproducts can therefore be withdrawn for treatment before the addition of fresh reagent alters the pH of the treatment stream.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 2003Date of Patent: November 13, 2007Assignee: The Babcock & Wilcox CompanyInventors: Dennis W. Patent number: 7291194Abstract: A thermal mixer reduces the temperature of flue gas supplied to a fabric filter. Two spray dry absorbers are operable to cool flue gas. A housing of the mixer has first and second inlet passages for gas from the absorbers, an outlet passage for gas to the fabric filter, and a mixing passage. A set of damper vanes extends in the mixing passage and has a mixing position for mixing the flue gases from the inlet passages to supply mixed gas to the outlet passage at relatively high pressure drop but lower temperature if one of the absorbers in not operating. They have a non-mixing position for passage of gases without mixing and at low pressure drop when both absorbers are operating. The invention can also be used to improve mixing of combined gas streams initially having different chemical compositions or amounts of particle loading.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 2005Date of Patent: November 6, 2007Assignee: The Babcock & Wilcox CompanyInventor: Robert E. Patent number: 7282087Abstract: An inert impingement surface that is pliable and which, when set in motion, works to shed itself of particle deposits. The pliable surface may be formed of a plurality of coactive members that co-operate with one another to clean-off the particle deposits from each other's surfaces. The coactive members may be in the form of chains, rods, cables, wires, granular inert materials such as gravel or metal balls or other impact means. The pliable surface may also be formed of a heat-resistant material which is caused to experience a continuing shape change, thereby casting-off the particle deposits adhering to the surface.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 2004Date of Patent: October 16, 2007Assignee: The Babcock & Wilcox CompanyInventors: Mikhail Maryamchik, David J. Patent number: 7275589Abstract: A bank of horizontally oriented boiler tubes which are periodically exposed to the abrasive action of a stream of blowing fluid cleaning medium. Portions of the boiler tubes, located at the top of the bank, are provided with spaced shields for protection from the fluid cleaning medium. An anti-vibration bar extends vertically between the protective shields to suppress vibration of the boiler tubes. A cap is fitted over the top end of the anti-vibration bar. The cap is sized to overlap adjacent portions of the protective shields thereby covering any gaps between the anti-vibration bar and the shields that would expose the boiler tubes to the action of the fluid cleaning medium.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 2004Date of Patent: October 2, 2007Assignee: The Babcock & Wilcox CompanyInventor: George H. Patent number: 7100521Abstract: A baffle employs a particular arrangement of baffle plates in a three dimensional configuration to aerodynamically separate popcorn ash particles from a flue gas flow. The baffle is attached to the rear wall of an economizer outlet flue back pass and is placed just below the economizer gas outlet. The baffle is designed to be uniquely shaped in three dimensions to redirect the large popcorn ash particles towards the deepest parts of the hoppers, which increases the fraction of the ash particles that are captured in the hoppers and decreases the potential for plugging in downstream equipment. The baffle is comprised of several triangular plates, usually three plates for every hopper. Each group of three plates is placed such that they appear to be three sides of an inverted pyramid. The open, fourth side of each of these pyramid shapes is on the side of the baffle closest to the front wall.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 2005Date of Patent: September 5, 2006Assignee: The Babcock & Wilcox CompanyInventor: Anthony Michael Ryan

Patent number: 6951454Abstract: A dual fuel burner including an elongated supply pipe and a gas injector for a boiler furnace having a plurality of peripheral openings around a center opening. The peripheral openings are pitched radially away from the longitudinal axis of the gas injector and also pitched either clockwise or counter-clockwise, to impart a swirling motion to gaseous fuel exiting the injector through the openings.
