  • Patent number: 5445803
Abstract: Process and device for decomposition of tritiated water and the recovery of elemental tritium (T.sub.2) in which a metal is used which oxidizes in the presence of water according to the formulaMe+xT.sub.2 O.fwdarw.MeO.sub.x +xT.sub.2.According to the invention, said metal is placed in an enclosure, a wall of which is selectively permeable to hydrogen and its isotopes; tritiated water is injected into the enclosure and the space behind said wall is made to communicate with an absorbing device for hydrogen and its isotopes. The injection of tritiated water and the communication with the absorbing device are stopped from time to time for the purpose of regenerating the metal by supplying hydrogen or deuterium to said space and by extracting water from the enclosure.

  • Patent number: 5302962
Abstract: An antenna system for producing a millimeter wave beam having a Gaussian distribution uses a high power source and a partial mode converter operatively coupled to the source and reviving from the source a T.sub.m,n mode wave which might either be TE.sub.m,n or TM.sub.m,n'. The converter delivers a mixture of modes including the mode T.sub.m,n at a relative power rate of 70 to 85% and at a relative phase 0, and at least one of the following additional modes, namely T.sub.m,n-1 at a relative power rate of 10 to 20% and at relative phase .pi., and TE.sub.m,n+1 at a relative power rate of 10 to 20% and at relative phase .pi.. The mixture of modes is applied to a collimation reflector (3, 10), having a concentration point (5) constituting the antenna system outlet. The antenna system can convert any T.sub.m,n mode into a linearly polarized narrow beam of very high power (about 1 MW) and and of high frequencies above 100 GHz.

  • Patent number: 4999175
Abstract: A process for separating sulfur-containing compounds other than mercaptans from gaseous streams. A gaseous stream including mercaptans and other sulfur-containing compounds is brought into contact with a solid supporting material coated with a thin layer of an amine-containing active agent capable of selectively adsorbing the sulfur-containing compounds other than mercaptans. This process permits the monitoring of mercaptans in gaseous streams without interference from other sulfur-containing compounds, as well as the purification of mercaptans.

  • Patent number: 4919065
Abstract: The invention is related to a submarine vehicle for the deep ocean research. This vehicle is composed of a penetrator (1) and of a support structure (2 to 7). The vehicle descends by gravity due to a ballast disposed in the lower part (11) of the penetrator. Apart from this ballast, the vehicle can be recovered due to a discoupling of the ballast by an explosive bolt (13). After discoupling, the float clusters (8) located in the upper part of said support structure supply the mounting thrust necessary for transferring the vehicle up to the ocean surface. If this thrust is insufficient, a pyrotechnical device (15) can be provided, which inflates a bag and thus creates an additional thrust directed to the upside. The invention is particularly useful in the investigation at the deep ocean sea-bottom.

  • Patent number: 4620857
Abstract: A porous solid such as a zeolite of clay can be degassed to make it suitable as an adsorbent, after which the entrances of the pores are narrowed to a desired size by treating the porous solid with two chemisorbable materials, one of which is diborane. The treatment may be repeated. The purpose of the first such treatment is to make the pore entrances so narrow, that unduly large molecules cannot enter and the smaller ones can, while a later treatment may serve to narrow the pores still further, so that the adsorbed molecules cannot escape.

  • Patent number: 4530241
Abstract: Material such as fissile material (2) requiring to be safeguarded is stored inside a container (1) which is subsequently sealed, for example by a closure comprising a cover (3) and sealing element (30). The whole structure of the container (1) is ultrasonically scanned initially using piezo electric transducers (T1, T2) to obtain an output from which is derived a distinctive identity for the container (1), determined by the particular characteristics of the internal structure of at least a portion of the container, and also a reference signal indicative of the whole container structure when its integrity is intact. Subsequent ultrasonic scanning of the whole container structure, for example intermittently, produces a monitor signal which if different to the reference signal indicates the occurrence of a breach in the container's integrity. The distinctive identity for the container (1) may be derived from a distinctive internal structure of the cover (3) which preferably contains a material matrix, e.g.
