  • Patent number: 9569887
Abstract: The identification and determination of aspects of the construction of a patient's heart is important for cardiologists and cardiac surgeons in the diagnosis, analysis, treatment, and management of cardiac patients. For example minimally invasive heart surgery demands knowledge of heart geometry, heart fiber orientation, etc. While medical imaging has advanced significantly the accurate three dimensional (3D) rendering from a series of imaging slices remains a critical step in the planning and execution of patient treatment. Embodiments of the invention construct using diffuse MRI data 3D renderings from iterating connections forms derived from arbitrary smooth frame fields to not only corroborate biological measurements of heart fiber orientation but also provide novel biological views in respect of heart fiber orientation etc.

  • Patent number: 9481945
Abstract: Rapid and specific detection of biological cells and biomolecules is important to biological assays across diverse fields including genomics, proteomics, diagnoses, and pathological studies. Microarrays and microfluidics increasingly dominate such detection techniques due to the ability to perform significant numbers of tests with limited sample volumes. A snap chip assembly is provided for the transfer of a microarray of reagents within semi-spherical liquid droplets on a transfer chip to a target assay microarray on an assay chip following assembly of the two chips and physical contact of the droplets with the target array. Reagents in nanoliter quantities are spotted on both chips and selectively transferred as liquid droplets between transfer chip and assay chip within the contact areas. Using the snap chip structure the inventors performed immunoassays with colocalization of capture and detection antibodies with 10 targets and bead-in-gel droplet microarrays with 9 targets in the low pg/ml regime.

  • Patent number: 9485048
Abstract: Scalability and energy efficiency are key issues in data centers imposing tight constraints on the networking infrastructure connecting the servers. Optical interconnection mitigates electronic limitations but the additional flexibility offered by WDM and datarate across a data center interconnection network requires architectural design, photonic technologies, and operating strategies be selected and optimized to meet power consumption requirements. Multi-plane architectures based upon space-wavelength domain architectures have been proposed to overcome scalability limitations. It would be beneficial to extend space and time switching domains with the wavelength domain for additional capacity to increase throughput as well as providing same electro-optic interface.

  • Patent number: 9484197
Abstract: A method of growing high quality crystalline films on lattice-mismatched or amorphous layers is presented allowing semiconductor materials that would normally be subject to high stress and cracking to be employed allowing cost reductions and/or performance improvements in devices to be obtained. Catalysis of the growth of these films is based upon utilizing particular combinations of metals, materials, and structures to establish growth of the crystalline film from a predetermined location. The subsequent film growth occurring in one or two dimensions to cover a predetermined area of the amorphous or lattice-mismatched substrate. Accordingly the technique can be used to either cover a large area or provide tiles of crystalline material with or without crystalline film interconnections.

  • Patent number: 9473332
Abstract: Cost, electronic circuitry limitations, and communication channel behavior yield communication systems with strict bandwidth constraints. Hence, maximally utilizing available bandwidth is crucial, for example in wireless networks, to supporting ever increasing numbers of users and their demands for increased data volumes, low latency, and high download speeds. Accordingly, it would be beneficial for such networks to support variable bandwidth allocations such that smaller frequency sub-bands are allocated to users, as their number increases, but the individual users/nodes insert more data-carrying signals in order to compensate for the loss of operating bandwidth arising from the accommodation of more users. It would further be beneficial for transmitters and receivers according to embodiments of such a network architecture to be based upon low cost design methodologies allowing their deployment within a wide range of applications including high volume, low cost consumer electronics for example.

  • Patent number: 9470951
Abstract: CMOS compatible SOI photonic integrated circuits (PICs) offer a low cost and promising solution to future short reach optical links operating beyond 100 Gb/s. A key building block in these optical links is the external optical modulator. Amongst, the PIC geometries for external modulators are those based upon ring resonators and Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI) where while the latter have been reported with increased thermal stability and fabrication tolerances, the former have demonstrated lower loss and lower driving voltages leading to a more energy efficient approach. Multi-segmented electrode structure based PAM optical modulator can potentially replace the analog digital-to-analog circuits (DACs) which are commonly used to achieve the multilevel electrical driving signal. Accordingly, it would be beneficial to combine the benefits of ring resonators to provide PAM-N modulators.
