Patents Assigned to The Smyth Manufacturing Company
  • Patent number: 4281854
Abstract: A lining to be applied to a spine of a book is disclosed wherein the lining is characterized by an integrated construction of a tough, relatively lightweight, durable, synthetic sheet exhibiting dimensional stability, good printability and good ink adhesiveness and which has printed simulated headbands at its opposite ends. The lining has a maximum length corresponding to the length of a book spine to which the lining is to be applied and the extent of the printed headbands correspond to the thickness of the book to which the lining is to be applied.

  • Patent number: 4187572
Abstract: In making integrated linings to be applied to spines of a succession of books in a bookmaking process, a high speed low cost method is disclosed which includes feeding strip stock from a supply of lining material, printing simulated headbands on one surface of that strip adjacent its longitudinal side edges and cutting the strip transversely to its longitudinal axis to form a succession of individual linings to be applied to spines of a succession of books.

  • Patent number: 4166300
Abstract: A printing mechanism is disclosed in a high speed apparatus for making low cost integrated linings to be applied to a succession of books being conveyed through a bookmaking machine. The printing mechanism is supported on a frame in a feed path of strip stock for printing simulated headbands on one surface of the strip, and a cutter is operatively supported on the frame for cutting the printed strip transversely of its longitudinal axis into individual linings to be successively applied to books being conveyed through the machine.

  • Patent number: 4074382
Abstract: A book forming and pressing apparatus provides a pair of chain driven conveyors or carriages in side-by-side relation which define a book flow path between the carriages on which are mounted a plurality of creasing iron assemblies. The creasing iron assemblies move through the book flow path in synchronized timed relation to the passage of books with a book pressed between each pair of creasing iron assemblies. An array of fixed elongated lamps are provided on a return side of each carriage for emitting radiant energy in a line focused on a path of travel of nippers of the creasing iron assemblies to heat and maintain the nippers at an elevated temperature for creasing each book at its hinge area upon the nipper being conveyed by its carriage into the book flow path.
