Abstract: An industrial centrifuge for extracting one or more compounds from biomass includes a centrifuge basket disposed within a cylindrical vessel. The centrifuge basket includes a cylindrical sidewall comprising an upper perforated portion and a lower solid portion and a basket baseplate coupled to the sidewall between the upper perforated portion and the lower solid portion. The centrifuge includes a spindle coupled to the basket baseplate, a spindle bearing assembly, and a contact seal disposed between the spindle bearing assembly and the basket baseplate. The lower solid portion of the sidewall, the spindle, and the basket baseplate define a skirted volume. During operation of the industrial centrifuge, air trapped within the skirted volume provides an air seal between an extraction fluid in the cylindrical vessel and the contact seal, spindle bearing assembly, or both, to prevent extraction fluid from contacting the spindle bearings and causing damage thereto.

  • Patent number: 6507161
Abstract: The present invention overcomes the disadvantages of previously known motor controllers for centrifuge machines wherein a motor controller is provided for a centrifuge machine including a logic control module, one or more power cells, and one or more contactors. The logic control module is capable of interfacing with the main centrifuge controller and provides control over the power cells and contactors to provide a voltage ramp-up to accelerate the centrifuge basket. As such, the logic control module avoids the current draining problems associated with across the line starting of the centrifuge motor. The power cells receive a voltage from the main power supply, and output to the contactors variable power to control centrifuge motor speed. Further, the configuration of multiple contactors to reverse the power supplied to the centrifuge motor windings may eliminate the need for a second, reverse direction motor.

  • Patent number: 6296774
Abstract: A method is provided to automatically control an infeed gate of a centrifuge to regulate the rate of incoming charge and thereby maintain a desired building rate for a charge wall being formed along inner sidewalls of a rotating centrifugal basket by measuring the charge wall thickness which forms, determining a fill rate at which the charge material enters the basket, and comparing the determined rate to a desired fill rate. Closure of the infeed gate is also controlled to gradually approach a minimum flow rate. A method is also provided for sensing an unstabilizing wobble of the centrifugal basket and closing the infeed gate in response. The automatic control of the opening and closing of the gate not only improves the capacity of the centrifuge, but also allows for remote operation.

  • Patent number: 5897786
Abstract: An ultrasonic probe is mounted in a centrifugal machine within close proximity to a maximum charge wall which is to be formed within a charge basket of the centrifugal machine. The probe comprises a tubular member which extends from an upper portion of an outer shell which surrounds the basket into the basket. A sensing head of the probe includes an ultrasonic transmitter and receiver which are mounted within a capsule formed of ultrasonic energy and vibration damping material. The transmitter and receiver are directed toward an inner surface of the charge basket of the centrifugal machine to monitor build up of a charge wall within the basket by directing bursts or pulses of ultrasonic energy toward the inner surface of the basket and receiving reflections or echoes of the pulses which are reflected from the charge wall building within the basket.

  • Patent number: 4522718
Abstract: An axially displaceable rotary part is latched securely in a certain axial position relative to a concentric rotary part by a mechanism which includes latch means that are rotated with the concentric part and are displaceable radially relative to it by movements of a ring member so as to engage elements of the latch means with and disengage them from a latchable member of the axially displaceable part. At operating speeds of the system the latch means are urged to latching position by centrifugal force. Although applicable to various rotary mechanical systems, the mechanism is particularly useful as a component of a heavy duty cyclical centrifugal machine for latching the bottom valve member of the centrifugal basket in closed position during the loading and centrifuging stages of each centrifugal operating cycle.
