Patents Assigned to Union Oil Company of California
  • Patent number: 8616806
Abstract: A riser support system for use in a body of water comprises a buoyant and ballastable support structure and a plurality of substantially vertical and rigid risers each of which is attached to the inside of the support structure at a location below the center of buoyancy of the support structure and below the surface of the body of water. Usually, each riser passes through the inside of a single tube in the support structure. Typically, the riser support system is used to support a plurality of risers and their surface wellheads inside the hull of an offshore platform, usually in such a manner that the axial movement of the risers and support structure is independent of the axial movement of the hull.

  • Patent number: 6761865
Abstract: Crystalline magnesium silicates are synthesized from silica-containing brines, preferably spent geothermal brines, by mixing the brine with a magnesium-containing compound, adjusting the pH of the resultant mixture between 8.0 and 14, and crystallizing the magnesium silicate from the mixture at a temperature between 50° C. and 200° C. Kerolite is preferably synthesized from brine by adjusting the pH in a range between 9.5 and 10.5 and heating the mixture to between 100° C. and 170° C. to precipitate the crystalline kerolite. The brine remaining after the crystallization step is depleted in silica and can be further processed without significant problems caused by silica scaling.

  • Patent number: 6688814
Abstract: A substantially rigid riser to offshore platform connector and a process of using the connector allows a riser to be preloaded and adjustably positioned relative to the offshore platform. The connector allows the riser tensile load to be limited by preloading and adjustably positioning the connector. In the preferred embodiment, hydraulic cylinders are used to preload the connector as well as to partially or fully support the riser during maintenance or repair procedures.

  • Patent number: 6685824
Abstract: Mercury is removed from crude oils, natural gas condensates and other liquid hydrocarbons by first removing colloidal mercury and solids that contain adsorbed mercury and then treating the hydrocarbons with an organic or inorganic compound containing at least one sulfur atom reactive with mercury. The sulfur compound reacts with dissolved mercury that contaminates the hydrocarbons to form mercury-containing particulates that are then removed from the hydrocarbons to produce a purified product having a reduced mercury content. Preferably, the treating agent is an organic sulfur-containing compound such as a dithiocarbamate or sulfurized isobutylene.

  • Patent number: 6666624
Abstract: A floating platform for use in a body of water comprises an uppermost buoyant and ballastable hull partially submerged in the water without contacting the floor of the body of water and usually without being moored to the floor of the body of water. The bottom of the uppermost hull is attached to the top of a lower buoyant and ballastable hull after the lower hull has been completely submerged in the water and anchored to the floor of the body of water with flexible moorings.

  • Patent number: 6651745
Abstract: A preferred embodiment of the inventive fluid delivery system comprises a vertical liquid/vapor separator and riser assembly that comprises a multi-phase separator inlet, a vapor outlet and riser, and a liquid outlet port connected to a hydraulically-driven centrifugal pump. By controlling the operational speed of the pump, the level of the separated liquid within the separator can be controlled without the need for control valves. The vertical separator is capable of low pressure operation and large variations in controlled liquid levels within the separator, allowing the relatively slow reaction time pump to control the liquid level from low pressure wells penetrating low pressure reservoirs.

  • Patent number: 6532642
Abstract: A silicon carbide rail for use as a support in an apparatus for holding semiconductor wafers is made by forming a first series of parallel slots or grooves into the front side of a graphite plate usually without piercing the back side of the plate, converting the slotted graphite plate into a slotted silicon carbide plate, and forming a second series of parallel slots into the back side of the slotted silicon carbide plate such that each slot on the back side connects with a corresponding slot on the front side. The width of each back side slot is less than that of the corresponding front side slot, thereby forming rail teeth having a ledge running along their to top surfaces.

  • Patent number: 6375907
Abstract: The emissions of hydrogen sulfide during the production of natural gas, oil or geothermal fluids from subterranean formations and the subsequent processing of these fluids is reduced by converting the hydrogen sulfide into a hydrogen halide or a halogen acid and then using the hydrogen halide or halogen acid for scale control and/or well acidizing. In a preferred embodiment, hydrogen sulfide produced with geothermal fluids is converted into hydrochloric acid, which is then used to reduce pH and control scale formation during the extraction of energy from geothermal fluids in a geothermal power plant.

  • Patent number: 6371204
Abstract: An apparatus for improved detection of underground well kicks, preferably comprising a first acoustic sensor mounted on the top drive of a drilling rig in acoustic contact with a liquid level within a drill string which is generally located within a wellbore, a second acoustic sensor in a trip tank connected to the wellbore, and a drawworks position indicator. The acoustic sensors detect signals reflected from liquid level interfaces allowing calculation of injected liquid volumes from the trip tank into the wellbore and liquid volume changes within the drill string. The drawworks sensor allows calculation of tubular volumes removed from the wellbore over time. Comparison or totaling of calculated volumes allows early detection of unwanted fluid fluxes between the wellbore and an underground formation.

  • Patent number: 6370547
Abstract: A multi-pass algorithm identifies duplicative information and correlates higher confidence and/or selected primary information in distributed databases. One embodiment determines a bounded area based at least in part on location information and/or location tolerances for a location-dependent attribute and comparing the bounded areas to previously indexed location information using a multi-pass algorithm to identify duplicative information. The algorithm may also use textual tolerances, confidence levels, and other factors to determine what information is to be correlated with the option of elevating the correlated information to a higher level database.
