  • Patent number: 9921164
Abstract: A system and a method for optical sensing of single molecule or molecules in various concentrations are provided. The optical sensor system comprises a first fiber, a second fiber, a light source and a detection device. The first fiber and the second fiber are fused together to form an optical coupler. The first fiber serves as the passageway for the analyte, while the second fiber serves as the waveguide for the light that will interact with the said analyte. One end of the second fiber is connected to the light source (e.g. laser), and the opposite end is connected to the detection device (e.g. spectrometer). The analyte is introduced into the first fiber through one of its ends, and is allowed to flow through inside the hollow core of the said first fiber. When light is delivered through the input end of the second fiber, the evanescent light is formed in the optical coupler and is allowed to interact with the analyte in the first fiber.

  • Publication number: 20170322241
Abstract: Technologies for performing non-intrusive fine-grained power monitoring of a datacenter are provided. Hardware component state information for servers in the datacenter is collected, along with aggregate power consumption measurements for the datacenter. The servers are grouped into multiple virtual homogenous server clusters (VHCs) based on characteristics of the servers. A power model is constructed comprising multiple power mapping functions associated with the multiple VHCs. Component state information of a particular server can then be analyzed, along with a corresponding aggregate power consumption measurement, using the constructed power model to determine an approximate power consumption of the particular server. The approximate power consumption of the server can then be displayed and/or provided to one or more power management applications.

  • Patent number: 9800509
Abstract: Telecommunication networks are under stress due to rapid traffic increase cause mostly by large file transfers. Disclosed herein is a cross-layer transport protocol specifically designed to efficiently handle large transactions. Traffic generated from large transactions is shaped into a periodic succession of fixed-size data frames. Each transaction can then be scheduled for transmission using a two-way reservation protocol. Exemplary results show that the proposed approach is capable of significantly improving goodput and end-to-end delay relative to TCP, improving efficiency of bandwidth utilization by over 40%.

  • Patent number: 9564799
Abstract: Boost-type switch-mode rectifiers (SMR) commonly use a resistor or a magnetic current sensor to measure the instantaneous input or inductor current that is used as the feedback to the current controller. A novel current sensorless scheme is described that computes the inductor current from the measured inductor voltage in a single-phase boost-type SMR using an adaptive low pass filter. This calculation requires an estimate of the inductance and the equivalent series resistance of the inductor coil. Both these parameters are dependent on operating conditions and are updated continuously. This is done using an adaptive model of the inductor that computes these parameters of the inductor once in every half cycle of the input current. The adaptation scheme is robust against parameter variations. Simulation and experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed technique which provides comparable performance to standard measured feedback current scheme both under steady-state and transient conditions.

  • Patent number: 9479216
Abstract: A spread spectrum communications method is based on time compression in which a sampled message signal at a first rate is transmitted at a higher sampling rate. Robustness is achieved by dividing the signal into overlapping segments, transmitting each segment fast enough so that the segments no longer overlap. The segments are received and the data signal reconstructed by overlap-adding the segments.

  • Publication number: 20160252450
Abstract: Fiber optic sensors include sensor regions in which an optical phase is modulated by an analyte to be detected. A long period fiber grating (LPG) is coupled to a coating that is arranged to selectively interact with the analyte. The resulting phase change is detected based on a transmission spectrum associated with the LPG so that analyte is detected and quantified. A plurality of such sensors is distributed along a fiber to form a sensor array that can be situated to detect analyte at a plurality of discrete regions.

  • Patent number: 9274053
Abstract: The present invention presents a device and methods of use thereof in combined electrohydrodynamic concentration and plasmonic detection of a charged species of interest using a flow-through nanohole array. The device comprises microchannels, which are linked to a substrate with arrays of through nanoholes, wherein the substrate comprises two layers, wherein one of the layers is made of insulator material and one of the layers is made of metal, whereby induction of an electric field across the nanohole array results in the species of interest concentrating inside the nanoholes and in the vicinity of the nanohole arrays. The induction of an electric field is achieved by means of an external electric field source, which is applied to the fluid containing the species of interest, resulting in electroosmotic (EO) flow. An additional pressure driven fluid flow in the microchannels, co-directional to the EO flow is applied by external means.
