  • Patent number: 4892184
Abstract: An infeed transfer system for a continuously operated container decorating apparatus comprises a mandrel wheel assembly having a rotating mandrel wheel, a plurality of regularly spaced mandrel assemblies pivotally mounted thereon, and a box cam spaced-apart from the mandrel wheel and communicating with one end of the mandrel assemblies, to guide the path of movement of the mandrel assemblies during the rotation of the mandrel wheel. A pocket wheel is rotatably mounted and is axially displaced from the mandrel wheel. The pocket wheel has a diameter smaller than that of the mandrel wheel and the box cam defines an undulating path that causes each of the mandrel assemblies to follow the circumferential periphery of the pocket wheel, in alignment with consecutive cradles defined by the pocket wheel, and such alignment continues through an arc of rotation.

  • Patent number: 4671093
Abstract: A tube transfer assembly for a tube printer includes a rotatable mandrel wheel which successively moves the tubes to be printed to different stations of the tube printer; a plurality of mandrels mounted along the circumferential periphery of the mandrel wheel for holding the tubes thereon; a rotatable star wheel assembly including a plurality of pockets for successively supplying the tubes to a position at the free end of the mandrel at the 11:00 position of the mandrel wheel; a guide disc rotatable with the star wheel and having a plurality of circular apertures positioned about the periphery thereof in alignment with the pockets; a first pusher rod which successively pushes one end of each tube within one of the apertures at a first rotatable position of the star wheel to correctly configure such end of the tube in a circular configuration; a second pusher rod simultaneously moveable with the first pusher rod which successively pushes each tube onto the mandrel at the subsequent 11:00 position of the mandre

  • Patent number: 4587926
Abstract: An intermittently operated apparatus for decorating cylindrical cans, each can having a cylindrical surface and a rim, includes a rotatable mandrel wheel; a plurality of mandrel assemblies mounted on the mandrel wheel which hold the cans on the mandrel wheel; a surface applicator roll having a length which extends past the bottom of each can and which applies a coating of varnish to the cylindrical surface of each can; a supply assembly for supplying the varnish to the surface applicator roll; a freely rotatable rim applicator roller having a tapered surface positioned in contact with the bottom rim of each can and with that portion of the surface of the surface applicator roll that extends past the bottom of each can, such that the rim applicator roller is driven by the surface applicator roll and varnish is transferred from the surface applicator roll to the tapered surface of the rim applicator roller and then to the bottom rim of each can at the same time that varnish is applied by the surface applicator

  • Patent number: 4435114
Abstract: An apparatus for handling objects such as container lids utilizes a separator assembly comprising a downwardly extending chute having an essentially L-shaped cross-section, for the rotation of the lids from a vertical disposition, to a horizontal disposition upon their ejection on to a horizontal conveyor or the like. An endless, movable platform is adjacent the chute and is adapted for downward movement in a line of travel that is essentially parallel and inboard of the chute. A plurality of cleats are mounted on the movable platform, and sweep through the channel within the chute, to urge the container lids to enter and make full traverse without jamming of the assembly, or damage to the lids. The present assembly is capable of high speed operation with minimal jamming and container lid damage.

  • Patent number: 4391560
Abstract: An assembly for use in a container lid conveyor apparatus serves to transfer container lids disposed on a generally horizontal conveyor, to disposition in a continuous stack of such lids balanced on their rims, and undergoing continuous rotation during the operation of the apparatus. This transfer is accomplished at speeds of up to 300 units per minute by an assembly comprising a chute having an upper and a lower vertical slideway, and an intermediate slideway inclined simultaneously forward and sidewise at acute angles with respect to the vertical, to guide the container lids forward to the stack. Side walls are associated with the chute along at least a portion of its lateral periphery, and a movable wall is disposed at the lower lateral periphery of the chute, in cooperative disposition with the side walls, to assist in guiding the descending container lids, and imparting a surface rotation to the lids that prepares them for reception by the spinning rods associated with the stack.

  • Patent number: 4337719
Abstract: A mandrel wheel assembly is disclosed for use with an apparatus for the continuous decoration of containers such as cylindrical cans, and comprises a circular mandrel wheel having a plurality of regularly spaced mandrel assemblies mounted transversely about its circumferential periphery. The mandrel assemblies have cam roller ends that communicate with a guiding stationary box cam, and oppositely extending container receiving mandrels. The mandrel wheel assembly is mounted along a stationary central shaft. A secondary mandrel support is provided adjacent the mandrels comprising a stationary planar support member also mounted on the central shaft with one or more planar support cams that extend radially from the secondary support member and are adapted to cammingly engage the mandrel assemblies. The support cams are juxtaposed to the coating stations and reduce unwanted deflection of the mandrels during coating operations.

  • Patent number: 3962970
Abstract: A method and device for printing upon a container wall, wherein during printing the container inner wall is moved around a circular rotatable support which keeps the container wall pressed directly against a rotating printing surface at the stop on which it is being printed. The cross sectional area of said support is a certain fraction of the cross sectional area of the container and the longitudinal position of the container wall is registered for the printing with the aid of a second spaced circular and withdrawable inner positioning support.
