    Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein relate to bearing apparatuses including a bearing assembly having a continuous superhard bearing element including a continuous superhard bearing surface and a tilting pad bearing assembly. The disclosed bearing apparatuses may be employed in pumps, turbines or other mechanical systems. In an embodiment, the bearing apparatus includes a first and second bearing assembly. The first bearing assembly includes a first support ring and a plurality of tilting pads. Each tilting pad is tilted and/or tiltably secured relative to the first support ring. The second bearing assembly includes a continuous superhard bearing element. The continuous superhard bearing element includes a continuous superhard bearing surface facing the plurality of tilting pads and exhibits a maximum lateral width greater than about 2 inches.

    Abstract: A module flexible ligament damper includes an cylindrical inner structure with a central axis and an outer cylindrical surface. An outer casing with an inner cylindrical surface is positioned around the inner structure. A modular ligament with an inner flange and an outer flange connected by a web is positioned between the inner structure and the casing. The inner flange is connected to the inner structure and the outer flange is connected to the casing to support the inner structure within the casing, and to permit free orbital movement of the inner structure on a plane perpendicular to the axis of the inner structure. In one embodiment, the web is straight but does not intersect the axis of the inner structure for flexing in a radial direction. In other embodiments, the web is curved for radial flexing.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for radial and axial hybrid bearings using gas sector(s) and magnetic sector(s) to increase bearing load capacity and stiffness, reduce bearing size and bearing span, and reduce cost comprises a stator and a rotor. An illustrative embodiment of a stator for use with a hybrid bearing may include one or more bearing pads positioned in a gas sector, and the stator may also include one or more magnetic sectors. The hybrid bearings may provide for the elimination of much of the magnetic bearing structure and associated power electronics using a pressurized gas/air bearing to react the bearing steady load while reserving the magnetic bearing and its controls to react dynamic loads and stabilize the bearing. In addition, the magnetic bearing controls for a hybrid bearing may be used to monitor bearing operating condition and provide communications of these conditions to the outside world.

    Abstract: A bearing system for reducing end clearance and axial vibrations includes a bearing housing and a bearing. The bearing is a thrust bearing and may be of any type, such as a flat thrust face, a taper land thrust bearing or a tilt pad thrust bearing. The bearing housing includes a cavity to hold the bearing. A fluid cavity is formed between the bearing and the bearing housing. At least one fluid passageway extends through the bearing housing to feed fluid to the fluid cavity. As fluid is introduced to the fluid cavity the pressure in the cavity moves the bearing outward, away from the bearing housing and towards the rotating thrust collar, reducing the clearance, or space, between the face of the bearing and the thrust collar, reducing or eliminating the vibrations.

    Abstract: The bi-directional rotation offset pivot thrust bearing includes a carrier and an array of longitudinal protrusions thereon that run through the center axis of the carrier. An array of pads are in slidable engagement with the longitudinal protrusions to permit the thrusts pads to move between first and second rotational positions. The thrust pads are automatically offset pivoted in a first direction when in a the first rotational position and automatically offset pivoted in a second direction when in the second rotational position. The thrust pads are offset pivoted in an approximate 60 percent to 40 percent ratio with the leading side of the thrust pad being 60 percent in both the first rotational position and the second rotational position. A retainer is also provided to maintain the thrust pads in slidable communication with the protrusions.
