Patent number: 11720101Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure relate generally to limiting the use of an autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicle by particular occupants based on permission data. More specifically, permission data may include destinations, routes, and/or other information that is predefined or set by a third party. The vehicle may then access the permission data in order to transport the particular occupant to the predefined destination, for example, without deviation from the predefined route. The vehicle may drop the particular occupant off at the destination and may wait until the passenger is ready to move to another predefined destination. The permission data may be used to limit the ability of the particular occupant to change the route of the vehicle completely or by some maximum deviation value. For example, the vehicle may be able to deviate from the route up to a particular distance from or along the route.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 2021Date of Patent: August 8, 2023Assignee: Waymo LLCInventors: Dmitri A. Patent number: 11720116Abstract: A system and method for avoiding or mitigating collisions by an autonomous vehicle is provided. Raw sensor data for the vehicle's environment is received, such as through a perception system of the vehicle. A trajectory is also received, the trajectory having a width corresponding to a distance that is at least as wide as the vehicle. The trajectory and raw sensor data are projected onto a grid, such as a static occupancy grid, having a plurality of cells. It is determined whether any cell that overlaps with the trajectory includes the raw sensor data. It is further determined, based on the raw sensor data, whether an obstacle is present along the trajectory. When no obstacles are determined to be present along the trajectory, the trajectory may be verified. However, where obstacles are determined to be present, the vehicle may take an action to avoid collision.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2021Date of Patent: August 8, 2023Assignee: Waymo LLCInventor: Jens-Steffen Ralf Gutmann

Patent number: 11714412Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to a method of managing a fleet of autonomous vehicles providing trip services. The method includes receiving information identifying an intermediate destination and a final destination for a trip. In this example, the intermediate destination is a destination where an autonomous vehicle will drop off and wait for a passenger in order to continue the trip, and the final destination is a destination where the trip ends. The method also includes determining an amount of waiting time the vehicle is likely to be waiting for the passenger at the intermediate destination, determining how a vehicle of the fleet of autonomous vehicles should spend the amount of waiting time, and sending an instruction to the vehicle, based on the determination of how the vehicle should spend the amount of waiting time.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 2020Date of Patent: August 1, 2023Assignee: Waymo LLCInventors: Cristi Landy, Julien Mercay, Saksiri Tanphaichitr, Laurens Andreas Feenstra, Salil Pandit

Patent number: 11714190Abstract: Example embodiments relate to techniques for hardware-in-the-loop testing with continuous integration for radar testing and development. A computing device may receive a target output for radar operation parameters undergoing development tests and determine whether a first output produced by a field programmable gate array (FPGA) based on the radar operation parameters differs from the target output less than a first threshold difference. When the output from the FPGA passes the comparison, the computing device may then cause a radar unit to transmit radar signals toward a target according to the radar operation parameters, which produces a second output that can also be compared to the target output. The FPGA may process signals for the radar unit. In some cases when the second output differs from the target output less than a second threshold difference, the computing device may provide the radar operation parameters as a radar software update to vehicles.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 2021Date of Patent: August 1, 2023Assignee: Waymo LLCInventors: Kevin Duncklee, Irving Chung

Patent number: 11716598Abstract: The technology relates to actively looking for an assigned passenger prior to a vehicle 100 reaching a pickup location. For instance, information identifying the pickup location and client device information for authenticating the assigned passenger is received. Sensor data is received from a perception system of the vehicle identifying objects in an environment of the vehicle. When the vehicle is within a predetermined distance from the pickup location, authenticating a client device using the client device information is attempted. When the client device has been authenticated, the sensor data is used to determine whether a pedestrian is within a first threshold distance of the vehicle. When a pedestrian is determined to be within the first threshold distance of the vehicle, the vehicle is stopped prior to reaching the pickup location, to wait for the pedestrian within the first threshold distance of the vehicle to enter the vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 2022Date of Patent: August 1, 2023Assignee: Waymo LLCInventors: Philip Nemec, Renaud-Roland Hubert, Joshua Seth Herbach, Min Li Chan, Michael Epstein, Salil Pandit, John Wesley Dyer, Juliet Rothenberg

Patent number: 11709503Abstract: Aspects of the technology relate to exception handling for a vehicle. For instance, a current trajectory for the vehicle and sensor data corresponding to one or more objects may be received. Patent number: 11709490Abstract: As an example, data identifying characteristics of a road user as well as contextual information about the vehicle's environment is received from the vehicle's perception system. A prediction of the intent of the object including an action of a predetermined list of actions to be initiated by the road user and a point in time for initiation of the action is generated using the data. A prediction of the behavior of the road user for a predetermined period of time into the future indicating that the road user is not going to initiate the action during the predetermined period of time is generated using the data. When the prediction of the behavior indicates that the road user is not going to initiate the action during the predetermined period of time, the vehicle is maneuvered according to the prediction of the intent prior to the vehicle passing the object.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2021Date of Patent: July 25, 2023Assignee: Waymo LLCInventors: Stéphane Ross, David Ian Franklin Ferguson

Patent number: 11708087Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide for controlling an autonomous vehicle using no block costs in space and time. For instance, a trajectory for the autonomous vehicle to traverse in order to follow a route to a destination may be generated. A set of no-block zones through which the trajectory traverses may be identified. A no-block zone may be region where the autonomous vehicle should not stop but can drive through in an autonomous driving mode. For each given no-block zone of the set, a penetration cost that increases towards a center of the no-block zone and decreases towards edges of the no-block zone may be determined. Whether the autonomous vehicle should follow the trajectory may be determined based on the penetration cost. An autonomous vehicle may be controlled in the autonomous driving mode according to the trajectory based on the determination of whether the autonomous vehicle should follow the trajectory.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 2021Date of Patent: July 25, 2023Assignee: Waymo LLCInventors: Ram Vellanki, Cheng Zhou
