Abstract: Recombinant DNA comprises promoter and terminator base sequences respectively upstream and downstream of an inverted base sequence complementary to a substantial sequence of bases in polygalacturonase mRNA. The antisense mRNA produced thereby delays softening of fruit, in particular tomatoes.

Abstract: A composition comprising (a) a metal salt or complex with an organic compound of the general formula ##STR1## and (b) an oxy-phosphorus compound where W may be --SH or an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl group, Q is --OH, hydrogen or optionally substituted hydrocarbyl and Z is hydrogen or optionally substituted hydrocarbyl and Q and Z or Z and W may complete a ring. The compounds are typically metal complexes of thiohydroxamic acids or dithiocarbamates. The metal is typically zinc. The compositions exhibit improved aqueous solubility compared with the metal complexes alone, and can be used as industrial biocides, especially fungicides and particularly in paint films and latices.
Abstract: A process for preparing a compound of formula (I) ##STR1## wherein X is oxygen or sulphur, by (a) reacting a substituted ortho-nitro or -nitroso phenol or a substituted ortho-nitro or -nitroso thiophenol with an alkali metal dithionite reducing agent in an alkaline reaction medium in the presence of carbon disulphide, to form a substituted 2-mercaptobenz-oxazole or -thiazole, acidifying the reaction mixture and collecting the 2-mercaptobenz-oxazole or -thiazole; and then (b) reacting the 2-mercaptobenz-oxazole or -thiazole with a compound of formula (IV)CF.sub.2 .dbd.CH--CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --L (IV)wherein L is a good leaving group.

Abstract: The synthesis of lignin by plants is controlled by transformation of the plant genome with a recombinant gene construct which contains the gene specifying an enzyme critical to the synthesis of a lignin precursor, which gene may be in antisense orientation so that it is transcribed to mRNA having a sequence complementary to the equivalent mRNA transcribed from the endogenous gene thus leading to suppression of lignin synthesis. If the recombinant gene has the lignin enzyme gene in normal, or "sense" orientation, increased production of the enzyme may occur when the insert is the full length DNA but suppression may occur if only a partial sequence is employed.

Abstract: A composition which contains a 4,5-polymethylene-4-isothiazolin-3-one and a salt or complex of 2-mercaptopyridine-1-oxide with a metal which is at least divalent. The salt or complex is typically zinc 2-thiopyridine-1-oxide. The compositions exhibit anti-microbial activity and certain combinations of isothiazolinones together with zinc 2-thiopyridine-1-oxide are surprisingly effective against both bacteria and fungi.

Abstract: DNA clones, e.g. P13-B, comprising at least part of a gene derived from peach that encodes ethylene-forming enzyme. Abstract: The growth of algae, fungi and pathogenic organisms in commercial and recreational waters, such as cooling towers, swimming pools and spas, may be controlled by adding to the water a primary sanitizing agent, preferably poly(hexamethylene biguanide) ("PHMB"), and a potentiating adjuvant comprising a calcium ion-chelating agent, preferably ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid ("EDTA"), in amounts such that the adjuvant renders the composition algicidal and fungicidal in water. The water may be further treated with a peroxy salt as a backup agent, preferably sodium perborate, or the calcium ion-chelating agent and peroxy salt may be combined as a shock treatment to water being treated with the primary sanitizing agent.
