  • Patent number: 9885947
Abstract: Disclosed herein are materials and methods used to form a three dimensional (3D) article having a printed layer thereon. The 3D articles are capable of displaying rear projected images, effectively as a 3D “screen” for displaying an image or a movie. The 3D articles are used as standalone articles or as a portion of an animatronic figure. The articles are made by forming a substantially planar thermoformable laminate including a rear projection screen material, printing and curing a radiation curable ink onto one or both sides of the laminate, and thermoforming to impart a shape to the laminate.

  • Patent number: 9881380
Abstract: Techniques and systems are described for performing video segmentation using fully connected object proposals. For example, a number of object proposals for a video sequence are generated. A pruning step can be performed to retain high quality proposals that have sufficient discriminative power. A classifier can be used to provide a rough classification and subsampling of the data to reduce the size of the proposal space, while preserving a large pool of candidate proposals. A final labeling of the candidate proposals can then be determined, such as a foreground or background designation for each object proposal, by solving for a posteriori probability of a fully connected conditional random field, over which an energy function can be defined and minimized.

  • Patent number: 9846845
Abstract: The disclosure provides an approach for recognizing and analyzing activities. In one embodiment, a learning application trains parameters of a hierarchical model which represents human (or object) activity at multiple levels of detail. Higher levels of detail may consider more context, and vice versa. Further, learning may be optimized for a user-preferred type of inference by adjusting a learning criterion. An inference application may use the trained model to answer queries about variable(s) at any level of detail. In one embodiment, the inference application may determine scores for each possible value of the query variable by finding the best hierarchical event representation that maximizes a scoring function while fixing the value of the query variable to its possible values. Here, the inference application may approximately determine the best hierarchical event representation by iteratively optimizing one level-of-detail variable at a time while fixing other level-of-detail variables, until convergence.

Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for generating 2D images of a 3D avatar in a virtual world. In one embodiment, a request is received specifying customizations to the 3D avatar. The 2D images are generated based on the request, each 2D image representing the 3D avatar from a different viewing angle in the virtual world. Advantageously, the 2D images may be sent to a client for display, without requiring the client to render the 3D avatar.

Abstract: A process and system capture infrared light that is reflected or emitted from a device to precisely locate the device. The process and system project visible light from a light source toward the device such that the light is precisely targeted at the device. Preferably the visible light passes through an atmosphere containing particulate matter rendering the visible light as a beam that appears to emanate from the device rather than from the light source.

Abstract: A method and system for simulation of deformation of elastic materials are disclosed herein. A matrix-free geometric multigrid method utilizing a direct coarse grid discretization is presented for the solution of linear systems resulting from an octree discretization of the equations of corotational linear elasticity. The diagonal component of the stiffness matrix needed for the multigrid smoother is calculated without generating the stiffness matrix. The use of an incomplete linear octree data structure supports the efficient simulation of objects with complicated boundaries. Furthermore, the method is robust to large deformations, making it suitable for character skinning applications in computer animation.

Abstract: There is provided a system for providing interactivity to a guest of an experiential venue, based on sensor measurement of the guest. The system comprises a sensor configured to sense a guest variable of the guest, where the sensor may be a biometric sensor, a facial recognition sensor, a voice stress analysis sensor, a gesture recognition sensor, a motion tracking sensor, or an eye tracking sensor, and may sense heart rate or another guest variable. The system also comprises a control system, which may be implemented as a computer, in communication with the sensor. The control system is configured to determine a guest state from the guest variable, and to modify a venue variable, for example by selecting a path a theme park ride follows. The control system modifies the venue variable according to the guest state to provide increased satisfaction to the guest of the experiential venue.

  • Patent number: 9843776
Abstract: Methods and systems for generating stereoscopic content with granular control over binocular disparity based on multi-perspective imaging from representations of light fields are provided. The stereoscopic content is computed as piecewise continuous cuts through a representation of a light field, minimizing an energy reflecting prescribed parameters such as depth budget, maximum binocular disparity gradient, desired stereoscopic baseline. The methods and systems may be used for efficient and flexible stereoscopic post-processing, such as reducing excessive binocular disparity while preserving perceived depth or retargeting of already captured scenes to various view settings. Moreover, such methods and systems are highly useful for content creation in the context of multi-view autostereoscopic displays and provide a novel conceptual approach to stereoscopic image processing and post-production.

  • Patent number: 9827719
Abstract: A method for fabricating custom surface reflectance and spatially-varying bi-directional reflectance distribution functions (BDRFs or svBRDFs). The 3D printing method optimizes micro-geometry to produce a normal distribution function (NDF) that can be printed on surfaces with a 3D printer. Particularly, the method involves optimizing the micro-geometry for a wide range of analytic NDFs and simulating the effective reflectance of the resulting surface. Using the results of the simulation, the appearance of an input svBRDF can be reproduced. To this end, the micro-geometry is optimized in a data-driven fashion and distributed on the surface of the printed object. The methods were demonstrated to allow 3D printing svBRDF on planar samples with current 3D printing technology even with a limited set of printing materials, and the described methods have been shown to be naturally extendable to printing svBRDF on arbitrary shapes or 3D objects.
