    Abstract: A friction type one-way clutch includes friction elements held by a retainer between an input side member and an output side member. The friction elements are released from frictional engagement with the input side and output side members to interrupt power transmission from the input side member to the output side member by rotating the retainer. For rotating the retainer, a rotor is formed on the retainer, and a stator having coils for generating a rotational magnetic field is disposed around the rotor. An electric current is fed to the coils of the stator to generate a rotational magnetic field, and the rotation of the rotor by this rotational magnetic field rotates the retainer.

    Abstract: A multiple disk clutch has a clutch disk stack which is pressed together by a spring arrangement and released by a fluid pressure operated piston which is movable against the force of the spring arrangement. To provide a low cost clutch with fewer parts, the clutch disk stack is placed in an essentially sealed chamber which can be pressurized by a pressure source. One side of the chamber is closed by the piston. The chamber therefore serves both as the clutch disk stack chamber and the piston pressure chamber. If the pressure in the chamber increase, the piston moves against the spring and releases the plates. If the pressure in the chamber decreases, the clutch plates are pressed back together by the spring.

    Abstract: Apparatus for transmitting torque from the engine to the variable-speed transmission of a motor vehicle has a primary flywheel which is connectable to the crankshaft of an engine, a secondary flywheel which is coaxial with and is rotatable relative to the primary flywheel against the opposition of one or more dampers and is connectable to the input shaft of a transmission by the clutch plate of a friction clutch having a cover which is permanently separably affixed to the secondary flywheel. An antifriction bearing between the two flywheels is located at least in part radially inwardly of fasteners which extend through holes in the first flywheel to separably connect the first flywheel to the crankshaft. At least one race of the at least one bearing is or can be integral with one of the flywheels.

    Abstract: An oil pressure control system for an automatic transmission which is equipped with a clutch including: an oil chamber; a piston adapted to be moved forward by pressure oil fed to the oil chamber; a plurality of friction discs adapted to engage when thrust by the piston; and a check valve assembly adapted to be opened by a centrifugal force, to release the pressure oil from the oil chamber. The control system comprises: an oil passage for feeding and releasing the pressure oil to and from the oil chamber; a limiter for limiting the inflow of the pressure oil into the oil chamber via the oil passage; an idle revolution detector for detecting that the clutch is idly revolving, to output an output signal when it detects the idle revolution; and a command unit made responsive to the output signal of the detector for limiting the inflow of the pressure oil into the clutch via the oil passage.

    Abstract: An improved coupling assembly includes a combined clutch and brake assembly. Springs are provided to urge the brake assembly to an engaged condition. A first pressure chamber holds fluid pressure to assist the springs in urging the brake assembly toward the engaged condition. A second chamber holds fluid pressure to urge the clutch assembly toward the engaged condition and to urge the brake assembly away from the engaged condition. Fluid is supplied at a relatively low pressure through the first chamber to provide for a controlled actuation of the brake assembly to the engaged condition under the combined influence of the springs and the pressure in the first chamber and to provide for the transmission of a controlled amount of braking torque when the brake assembly is engaged. Fluid is supplied to the second chamber at a higher pressure to overcome the influence of the springs and operate the clutch assembly to the engaged condition.

    Abstract: A slant plate type compressor with a variable displacement mechanism is disclosed. The compressor includes a drive mechanism having a drive shaft rotatably supported in a compressor housing and a coupling mechanism for drivingly coupling the drive shaft to pistons such that rotary motion of the drive shaft is converted into reciprocating motion of the pistons. The coupling mechanism includes a slant plate having an inclined surface. The slant angle changes in response to a change in pressure in the crank chamber and, thus, changes the capacity of the compressor. The drive shaft includes an inner end portion which has a diameter that is smaller than a diameter of the remainder of the drive shaft. A bias spring which has an outer diameter that is greater than a diameter of the remainder of the drive shaft is resiliently mounted on the inner end portion of the drive shaft between the slant plate and the cylinder block.

Radially acting stops on the hub can be provided peripherally between the individual spring tongues to limit the spring travel.

    Abstract: Two solenoid-actuated shuttle valves selectively direct hydraulic fluid from a line pressure source to a clutch and brake servo or direct fluid from the clutch and servo to a low pressure drain, in accordance with the combined states of the solenoids. The orifices control also the flow rate in the system between the friction elements and drain ports. Accumulators are located in the system between the shuttle valves and the friction elements. An arrangement of check valves and orifices located between the shuttle valves and the accumulators establish the rate of flow between each of the accumulators and the associated friction element.

    Abstract: A motor-operated actuator has a clutch members are set in slide recesses formed in a drive member which are regulated in movement with a clutch base. A protrusion is formed on each of the clutch members, and a groove is formed around the protrusion. Both end portions of a return spring are placed in the grooves of the clutch members, and fixed there by thermal caulking. Thereby, the clutch member is prevented from being damaged by unsatisfactory disengagement. The clutch members are prevented from being disconnected from the return spring, and the former can be positively connected to the latter with high efficiency.

    Abstract: A holdback system is provided which allows additional rotation of a shaft following actuation of an associated holdback device. That additional rotation of a shaft permits other associated holdbacks to actuate. This additional rotation of a rotatable shaft, such as a shaft of a speed reducer, is accomplished by providing a helical gear of a speed reducer mechanism in gear mesh relation with a helical gear of a speed reducer and, in addition, allowing the driven helical gear of the holdback mechanism to move axially after the holdback mechanism is actuated. This axial movement permits the driving helical gear of the speed reducer to rotate by a preselected amount and allow the entire system to move a slight degree in the reverse direction. This reverse movement permits other later actuated holdbacks to actuate and share the overall load with the earliest actuating holdback.

The viscous-fluid disc damper can include a fluid storage for compensating fluid within the fluid housing, via a connecting path between the fluid storage and the fluid housing.

    Abstract: A detector on a wire lead machine includes a pair of contacts biased into a normally closed position. The wire is fed between the contacts, keeping the contacts open, and the insulation on the wire prevents electrical conductivity between the contacts. If the wire runs out, the contacts close to shut off the machine. Additionally, a splice on the wire establishes an electrical path between the contacts and, again, the machine is shut off. The detector includes a detection circuit which generates a control signal. In the event a splice is passing through the contacts, the detection circuit generates a control signal having a relatively short time duration (as for example, 100 microseconds) and holds the signal for a sufficient time period (as for example, 500 milliseconds). This allows a suitable control means (which may include a microprocessor) to shut off the machine because of either wire runout or a splice on the wire, thereby preventing serious damage to the machine and maintaining productivity.

The key and groove facilitate assembly of the cap member to the crankpin bearing portion by providing proper alignment of these components, and further facilitates disassembly of the cap member from the crankpin bearing portion should the connecting rod need repair or replacement.
