  • Patent number: 5159851
Abstract: Disclosed is a brake grip 10 including a body member 12 and a lever arm section 14. The brake grip 10 has an ergonomically shaped exterior surface which supports and distributes proportionately the weight and pressure experienced by a hand grasping the grip during bicycling. The body member 12 includes a palm saddle 20, a rocker ridge 32 along an outer rear edge of the palm saddle, and a thumb ledge 22 on an inner side of the body member. An outwardly projecting wedge element 46 is at the front end of the palm saddle 20. The wedge element 46 terminates at an outer end in a semi-rounded tip 46a, and it has a base 46b which merges at a lower, inner side portion with the curved surface 30 of the thumb ledge 22, and at a lower, rear portion with a front end of the palm saddle 20. The merging portions form a smooth, rounded, enlarged load bearing surface. The lever arm section 14 has grooves 50-52 for fingers and it covers the exterior of a lever arm 48 of a conventional brake lever.

  • Patent number: 5160007
Abstract: An apparatus for transmitting torque between the output element of an internal combustion engine and the input element of a variable-speed transmission in a motor vehicle has a first flywheel which is screwed or bolted to the output element and a second flywheel which is coaxial with and rotatable relative to the first flywheel and is connected to the input element by the clutch plate of a friction clutch. One or more dampers are provided in a lubricant-containing annular chamber of the first flywheel to oppose rotation of the flywheels relative to each other, and each damper has an annulus of arcuate coil springs acting in the circumferential direction of the flywheels. The cover of the clutch has stressing arms which extend into the chamber and engage the springs.

  • Patent number: 5158165
Abstract: A backing plate for connection to a clutch disc includes a pair of spaced friction material portions (or pads). A central channel extends between the two portions to allow air to flow over and cool a central area of the friction material. Clearances are defined at radially inner and outer areas of the channel and receive rivets to secure the backing plate to a clutch disc. The rivets are positioned radially between the radially inner and radially outer edge of the friction material, such that the backing plate is firmly secured to the clutch disc to prevent bowing. The improved backing plate ensures that the backing plate remains firmly secured to the clutch disc, and that the friction material is adequately cooled such that it efficiently transmits rotational forces from a drive source to a driven shaft.

  • Patent number: 5156246
Abstract: A one-way clutch comprises a plurality of rollers, a retainer having the same number of roller pockets as rollers, a cylindrical shell having the same number of cam grooves as rollers, and springs for normally biasing the rollers toward the cam grooves. The cam grooves are provided at the axially intermediate portion of the shell. The shell is provided at one end with a radially inwardly-turned flange and at the other end with a cylindrical boss portion having a smooth inner surface free of cam grooves. The retainer includes a pair of annular portions at either end and an axially intermediate portion provided with roller pockets. The annular portion which is inserted into the boss portion of the shell has a smooth cylindrical outer surface dimensioned to be pressingly fitted to the boss portion. Thus there are no gaps between the retainer and the shell at the boss portion of the shell, thereby sealing that end of the shell and preventing the outflow of grease and the entry of dust.

  • Patent number: 5154268
Abstract: An IC engine is connected via a clutch with a change-speed transmission. A sensor responding to a gear selection informs the electronic control circuitry in which gear the vehicle is traveling. The rotary part of a tachometer is provided at the output of the transmission and is in cooperation with the sensor part of the tachometer, which feeds a signal to the electronic control circuitry. A universal joint shaft runs from the output of the transmission to the axle transmission, which is connected via the axles to the drive wheels. The rotary tachometer elements, connected with the drive wheels, are in cooperation with the tachometer sensors, whose output signals are supplied to the electronic control circuitry and compared therein with a calibration value. Such comparison determines the optimum clutch engagement time for the respective travel and loading condition of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 5150777
Abstract: Apparatus for transmitting torque from the output shaft of the engine to the input shaft of the variable-speed transmission in a motor vehicle has a primary flywheel which is connectable to the output shaft, a secondary flywheel which is connectable to the input shaft by engaging a friction clutch, and one or more dampers which oppose rotation of the flywheels relative to each other. The flywheels define an annular chamber for the damper or dampers, and such chamber surrounds two closely adjacent portions of the flywheels which define a radially extending clearance for the flow of cooling air. The radially inner portion of the chamber is separated from the clearance by an annular seal which is located at most midway between the radially innermost and radially outermost portions of an annular friction surface on the secondary flywheel. Such friction surface is adjacent one friction lining of a clutch plate forming part of the friction clutch and being connectable to the input shaft of the transmission.

  • Patent number: 5148720
Abstract: A conventional lock-up solenoid having a long delivery tube and mounting bracket with outwardly extending mounting legs is mounted on a transmission torque converter case requiring a lock-up solenoid with a short delivery sleeve. This is accomplished by a spacer member constituted by a pair of spacers carried on threaded studs which are received in the tapped holes. In effect, the spacer shortens the long delivery tube so that it fits the space of a short delivery tube lock-up solenoid. If the transmission is one requiring a long delivery tube, it is installed without the spacer and as any other replacement lock-up solenoid.

  • Patent number: 5148902
Abstract: An electromagnetic coupling device is proposed to obviate several drawbacks in the conventional devices, namely, to prevent loose fixing in axial direction which gives rise to undesirable rotation of the rotary shaft following the rotor, to reduce the production cost due to the use of magnetic pole in the rotor, to reduce lengthy lengthy assembly work brought about by many fixing rings and to prevent slipping out of the hub and the rotary shaft encountered in the conventional coupling devices. In order to obviate the drawbacks encountered in the conventional coupling device, a rotor retainer is placed around the rotary shaft to urge a rotor against a hub, in addition, the rotary shaft is provided with fixing portions of a minimum number, such as axially extending legs at least one of which is attached with a claw, stepped portions, a groove and so forth for preventing slipping out of the rotary shaft, hub and driven shaft.

  • Patent number: 5139126
Abstract: A clutch control device comprises a rotatable driving member to which one end of a traction cable is circumferentially attached, the traction cable having a coupling piece at its other end. The control device also includes a sleeve member which is in telescopic engagement with the coupling piece, with releasable locking means arranged between the sleeve member and the coupling piece. The sleeve member is arranged for connection to a control linkage, leading for example to a clutch pedal; and the control device also has a spring which urges the sleeve member towards the coupling piece. Any wear occurring upstream of the device, for example in the associated clutch, is automatically taken up due to the provision of resilient preloading means which tend to maintain the traction cable under tension and which act between the fixed support or housing member of the assembly and the coupling piece, which is thereby biassed towards the sleeve member.
