  • Patent number: 4116659
Abstract: Method and apparatus are provided for circulating molten metal in a glass-supporting pool of molten metal in a direction counter to the advance of freshly delivered molten glass and outwardly into marginal spaces between glass restraining members and the side walls of the bath where it is subjected to forces establishing wave action in the surface of the pool of molten metal and then through means for dampening those waves to return the flow of molten metal to the main portion of the glass-supporting pool of molten metal whereby the metal can be purified and desirable thermal conditions can be established in the vicinity of the molten glass delivery onto the pool of molten metal.

  • Patent number: 4025327
Abstract: A method of fabricating an inlet leak for measuring chemically reactive gases. The method involves the steps of preparing a selected internal surface of a high melting point metal tubing for sealing to a glass tubing; inserting a portion of the glass tubing into the prepared portion of the metal tubing, the glass tubing having an outer diameter substantially the same as the inner diameter of the metal tubing; sealing the inserted glass tubing to the internal surface of the metal tubing; drawing the glass tubing under a magnifying device to reduce the entire interior diameter thereof to substantially two microns; and breaking away an end portion of the drawn glass tubing.

  • Patent number: 3961928
Abstract: Apparatus for detecting and reducing bowing of a rotating roll used with hot material comprises a proximity sensor mounted adjacent the surface of a roll or of a member attached thereto, and arranged to generate an electric signal which varies between maximum and minimum limit values during each revolution of the roll in dependence on any bowing of the roll, cooling means for selectively cooling parts of the roll and a bowing detection circuit arranged to receive the electric signal and provide an operating signal when the electric signal varies by more than a predetermined amount from one of the said limit values, and actuating means arranged to respond to the operating signal and operate the cooling means to cool a required part of the roll to reduce bowing.

  • Patent number: 3959010
Abstract: There is disclosed a mobile cleaning unit which utilizes air vortexes to scour the surface of streets, pavement and the like and to remove finely subdivided debris therefrom. The vortexes are generated by a vacuum which is applied through a cleaning head bearing apertures of limited cross sectional area to provide a minimal air flow therethrough of at least about 200 cubic feet per minute per square inch of aperture area. The vacuum is at least about three, preferably at least five inches mercury beneath atmospheric pressure resulting in the development of a well defined air vortex at the inlet to each of the apertures of the cleaning head. The cleaning head is supported and moved across the surface to be cleaned at an elevation sufficient to place the base of the vortex on the work surface.
