Abstract: In an electroluminescent panel which in turn comprises a transparent electrode member on a transparent substrate, a first dielectric layer, an electroluminescent layer, a second dielectric layer, and a back electrode member, at least one of the first and the second dielectric layers is divided into first and second partial dielectric films nearer to and farther from the transparent electrode member, respectively. The first partial dielectric film is deposited in a nonoxidization atmosphere by the use of a pellet which essentially consists of silicon and oxygen. Thereafter, the second partial dielectric film is deposited on the first partial dielectric film in an oxygen atmosphere and has a relative dielectric constant greater than the first partial dielectric film. Alternatively, each of the first and the second dielectric layers may comprise the first partial dielectric film of silicon and oxide and the second partial dielectric film mentioned above.

Abstract: An improved electrophoretic display device is provided including a first electrode, an opposed grid structure, and dielectric fluid having a plurality of inorganic pigment particles coated with an organosilane derivative movable between positions adjacent the electrodes during operation. The organosilane derivative preferably includes a quaternary ammonium moiety. The positively charged, pigment particles are rapidly released from the first, or viewing, electrode and are resistant to agglomeration.
Abstract: Dialkanesulfonyl peroxide (RSO.sub.2 --O--O--O.sub.2 SR) is prepared in a continuous process by electrolyzing the corresponding alkanesulfonic acid at an elevated temperature (to keep the peroxide product in solution) in a continuous-flow electrolysis cell, removing the solution from the electrolytic cell, cooling the solution to precipitate the peroxide product, and recycling the supernatant alkanesulfonic acid back to the cell.
Abstract: The invention provides an installation and method for generating an electrical field of a large area in soil having a vegetation zone between the ends of roots of plants in the soil and the surface of the soil, which comprises at least one cathode having a high conductivity and a low transition resistance arranged in the vegetation zone, each one of the cathodes being a flexible net comprised of threads defining meshes of a sufficient size to accommodate the plants therein, the threads of the net being comprised of at least one core material selected from the group consisting of polyamide, acrylic resin, polyester, and carbon and metal filaments embedded in an electrically conductive synthetic resin, an anode arranged in a deeper zone of the soil at a greater distance from the soil surface than each one of the cathodes, and an electrical conductor system connecting each one of the cathodes to the anode to enable an electric current to flow therebetween.
Abstract: An evacuable wafer processing machine includes a load-lock station, a wafer transfer station separated from the load-lock station by means of a gate-valve and a wafer coating station. Wafers contained within an evacuated wafer box are loaded into the load-lock station. The load-lock station is then closed and evacuated. A pair of pneumatically-operated plungers operable within the load-lock station, pick-up and remove the covers from the wafer box. The gate-valve is opened and the box of wafers is transferred into the wafer transfer station. Within the wafer transfer station, a wafer transfer blade passes vertically through the wafer box to serially transfer the wafers between the transfer station and the wafer coating station. After all the wafers have been coated, the wafer box is transferred through the open gate-valve into the load-lock station, the gate-valve closed and the covers replaced on the wafer box.
Abstract: An optical transmission monitor for determining the optical transmissivity and thickness of films deposited on a substrate. A monitor substrate in the form of a rotating disk exposed to the deposition process is used. An optical system for measuring the transmissivity of the disk obstructs a fixed segment of the rotating disk so that the film thickness on the monitor disk is a known fraction of the film on the substrate being processed.

Abstract: The concentration of an acid in a weakly ionized aqueous solution, more particularly the concentration of boric acid in solution in demineralized water from the primary circuit of a pressurized water nuclear reactor, is modified by effecting simultaneously the dissociation of the acid and the electrodialysis of the solution using at least one electrodialysis membrane comprising a polymer support such as PTFE or FEP and having aminated groups introduced for example according to a process comprising a step of grafting.
Abstract: An antireflective film (7, 8) for photoelectric devices comprises at least a layer having a refractive index being the largest on the side abutting on the light receiving surface (2a) or the light emitting surface of a photoelectric device and continuously decreasing according to the distance outward from said side.

Abstract: A sputtering apparatus for sputtering magnetic materials. The apparatus comprises at least one pair of magnetic field-generating sources, a substrate disposed within the magnetic field-generating sources, a target disposed opposite to the substrate, and a magnetic thin plate disposed at a side of the substrate which is remote from the target. The magnetic thin plate is disposed at a position in close contact with the substrate or a position slightly away from the substrate, or is disposed movably between such positions. When sputtering a magnetic material onto the substrate, a uniform magnetic field can be generated on the substrate surface by virtue of the provision of the thin magnetic plate.
Abstract: A process for the removal of water from dispersed particles such as vinyl resins uses electrofiltration to yield a high total solids content wetcake. A final dryer such as a fluid energy dryer is used to yield a dry, finely divided resin or polymer. Accordingly, the need for various spray drying methods accompanied by subsequent harsh grinding steps are eliminated. Substantial energy cost savings are realized and the need for coagulation additives are eliminated as well as the necessary removal and neutralization of undesirable residues.

Abstract: An electrolyte for electrolytic capacitor containing within an aprotic solvent a hexafluorophosphate of a tetraalkyl ammonium cation, a diazonium cation or a triarylcarbonyl cation.
Abstract: A cathode for use in the electrolytic refining of copper which comprises a carrying bar and a flat starting plate, which is secured to the carrying bar and made of special steel and provided with electrically insulating edge strips at least at its vertical longitudinal edges, which are formed in their edge faces with a groove, which contains an edge strip, that is made of a natural or synthetic polymer and fits into said groove and protrudes from the edge throughout its length. To prevent a deposition of metal in the critical region, the insulating edge strip which has been fitted into the dovetail groove has been formed by a longitudinal folding of a polymer film and contains at its fold line a wire of special steel, and the side portions of said film are coextensive and lie one over the other and are liquid-tightly joined to each other. The invention relates also to a process of manufacturing the cathode.
