  • Patent number: 11980921
Abstract: A method and system for removing non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL) from geologic media below the surface of the ground, employing a flexible liner disposed down a borehole. A flexible carrier liner has an absorbent outer cover composed of a NAPL-absorbent outer layer and a NAPL-absorbent inner layer, both preferably hydrophobic. The liner with outer cover is placed down the borehole, preferably but not necessarily by eversion. Liner placement presses the absorbent outer layer against the borehole wall. NAPL in the groundwater adjacent the outer layer is absorbed into the outer layer and then wicked into the inner layer. The liner and outer cover can then be extracted from the borehole to remove from the subsurface the NAPL absorbed in the cover's absorbent layers. If portions of the liner are transparent, a down-hole camera may be deployed to monitor the degree of NAPL absorption in the absorbent inner layer.

  • Patent number: 11945732
Abstract: A two-stage treatment process for destroying per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in an aqueous stream. The two-stage treatment process uses a combination of multifunctional crystalline molecular sieves, such as zeolites and zeotypes, to separate PFAS from the aqueous stream, catalytically decompose and defluorinate any PFAS molecules, and generate non-toxic waste products that are safe for disposal. The first stage includes adsorption of the PFAS within one of a pair of vessels containing porous, hydrophobic, hydrothermally stable molecular sieves, dehydration of the captured PFAS on the sieves, and catalytic ozonation of the captured PFAS molecules on the dried sieves. The second stage involves catalytic decomposition and neutralization of the ozonation results with one of a pair of vessels including a zeolite-supported CaO catalyst, catalytic oxidation of any toxic CO generated by the decomposition, and an acid wash for regeneration of the spent catalyst.

  • Patent number: 11858841
Abstract: A method of removing organic carbon and other contaminants from a water stream. The method comprises screening large solids from the stream. Pre-oxidation chemicals may then be added. A coagulant is fed into the stream. An activated carbon, preferably formed from lignite, is added by pumping a highly concentrated activated carbon slurry into the stream. The stream, including the activated carbon and coagulant, next flows into a clarifier, where the coagulant will flocculate and enmesh the activated carbon. The activated carbon adsorbs organic carbon and other contaminants, including bacteria, pharmacological agents, and hydrocarbons, as the stream flows through the clarifier. Eventually, the flocculate will agglomerate and settle out in the clarifier, where it, the enmeshed carbon, and the contaminants they contain may be removed. The stream's organic carbon content exiting the clarifier will be much reduced. Accordingly, less primary oxidizing agent will be needed to treat any remaining organic carbon.

  • Patent number: 11702352
Abstract: A cost-effective system and method dissolves gas, such as oxygen, into water in a manner that prevents gas bubble carry over by using a bubble capture system (BCS). The system and method further eliminates or minimizes turbulence at the suction and discharge of a pump using an energy dissipation header (EDH). The BCS can create a top-down flow that permits bubbles to rise faster than the velocity of the downward flow of water. The EDH can use a pipe design, such as a slotted pipe design, that permits a maximum system water flow. The technology can be applied to water bodies to mitigate eutrophication and may also be applicable in other fields, such as wastewater lift stations, fish farms, oil and gas industry, tidal applications with low flushing rates, and winter under ice oxygenation to prevent fish kills.
