  • Patent number: 7359317
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for providing redundancy for telecommunication switches. A primary telecom switch has an active processing board and a passive I/O board for communicating with external sources, such as a control network and bearer traffic network. A redundant secondary telecom switch has an active processing board and a passive I/O board for communicating with a control network, and is connected to the I/O board of the primary switch through a redundancy connection for communicating with the bearer traffic network. According to the invention, the secondary telecom switch assumes the role of the primary telecom switch in the event that the primary processing board becomes unavailable. The secondary telecom switch then communicates with the bearer traffic network as the master switch through the redundancy connection and the I/O board of the primary switch, thus avoiding the necessity for reconnections and reconfiguration.

  • Patent number: 7356012
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of effecting in a computer system transmission of data between a digital user unit and a computer resource, the user unit being adapted to detect positions on a base which is provided with a part of a global position-coding pattern. The invention is characterized in that a request for access to a computer resource is received, using a first protocol stack, by the computer system from the user unit, said request containing a position indication, relating to which part of the global position-coding pattern that has been detected by the user unit. The computer system gains access to a computer resource using a communication mode and a second protocol stack. The communication mode is chosen based on the position indication. Only the second protocol stack comprises TCP/IP functionality, so that only data transmitted between the computer system and the computer resource comprises routing information.

  • Patent number: 7352775
Abstract: In a multi-carrier transmission scheme (frequency domain multiplexed—FDM), a single high rate data stream is split into multiple lower rate data streams each transmitted over a different carrier (e.g., a tone or bin). The data rate possible from a multiple-carrier transmission scheme is theoretically equivalent to the data rate possible from a single-carrier (including baseband) scheme with the same composite bandwidth. The scheme allows for a communications system that can selectively send each data signal (e.g., audio data, video data, raw data, etc.) partitioned out into full and half duplex sections (e.g., tones). The scheme can have a reduced complexity and cost and use less bandwidth. This is done by being able to selectively split a data signal into both full and half duplex tones.

  • Patent number: 7349394
Abstract: An optical line terminal (OLT) monitors and controls communications with a plurality of optical nodes (ONs), such as optical network units (ONUs) and/or optical network terminators (ONTs), within a passive optical network (PON), such as, but not exclusively, an Ethernet-based passive optical node (EPON). A tagging mechanism is implemented to identify an origin ON that introduces a frame into the PON segment linking the origin ON with the OLT. The origin ON produces a PON tag to associate its identifier (ON_ID) to the frame. The PON tag facilitates filtering and forwarding operations, and enables the physical layer interface (PHY) to the PON segment to emulate a point-to-point and/or shared communications link. The PON tag allows a MAC control layer to create virtual ports to traffic incoming and outgoing optical signals, and supply the virtual ports to a forwarding entity for frame filtering and forwarding.

  • Patent number: 7333517
Abstract: A high-resolution, per-packet measurement tool for analyzing a computer network that operates by sending a predetermined number of packets from a sender machine to a receiver machine with measurement information inserted into the packet. The system kernel at the sending machine stamps a sequence number and the sender's local time into the data section of each packet. When packets arrive at the receiver machine, they are similarly stamped by the receiving machine's kernel with the receiving machine's local time. The maintained packet information serves as the basis for latency analysis. For example, one set of latencies can be obtained with QoS mechanisms turned on, and another set with QoS mechanisms turned off, whereby the benefits of the QoS mechanisms can be accurately determined. To analyze the latencies, the present invention normalizes each time and each latency into relative latency information. Clock skew and timer jumps may be handled as part of the normalization.

  • Patent number: 7324529
Abstract: The invention concerns the dynamic reservation of resources according to the RSVP protocol for transmitting an application flow in the form of first packets between a radio terminal and a remote unit interconnected via a first IP network and a cellular radio communication system. The cellular radio communication system uses a second IP network, or even a third IP network, in its core network. According to the invention, the dynamic reservation of resources in the first IP network is completed by a second dynamic reservation of resources in the second IP network, and where necessary a third dynamic reservation of resources in the third IP network. For this, transmission elements of the cellular radio communication system perform the association between the tunnel identity used for transmitting the first packets of the application flow and the parameters assigned to each RSVP session.
