    Abstract: A random orbit sander having a speed limiter includes a bearing upon which a platen is rotatably mounted. The speed limiter includes a braking member formed of a non-magnetic, electrically conductive material fixed relative to the platen of the sander. The spin limiter also includes at least one magnet supported by a housing of the sander and being disposed adjacent the braking member. A magnetic field formed by the at least one magnet intersects the braking member wherein relative movement between the at least one magnet and the braking member results in the generation of an eddy current force which inhibits rotation of the platen.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for grinding a surface on a workpiece, such as a spigot on a pipe, while supporting the workpiece on the surface being ground. The grinding apparatus includes workpiece support wheels, two of which are positioned beneath the workpiece and contact the workpiece at the surface being ground. The grinding apparatus also includes a rotator mechanism, such as a motor which drives one of the workpiece support wheels in frictional contact with the workpiece outer surface, for rotating the workpiece. The grinding apparatus further includes a surface grinding mechanism, such as a motor and grinding or cutting wheel positioned generally between the two workpiece support wheels and which contacts the surface being ground. The cutter mechanism is adjustable in a vertical direction and angularly to grind an angled surface.

    Abstract: A single castable ophthalmic lens polishing lap includes a mounting plate that is adapted for connection to a lap press/cylinder machine and includes a flexible membrane that is affixed to the mounting plate and filled with castable material. A polishing pad is affixed to the flexible membrane. The lap is cast by first applying energy to the castable material that causes it to soften, and to preferably change to a fluid phase, and then pressing the lap against the rough cut back surface of a lens. This causes the castable material to deform so that the lap's curvature is complementary to the lens' prescription curvature. Energy is then removed from the lap so that the castable material solidifies in the desired shape. After polishing, the lap can be recast with another lens having a different prescription.

    Abstract: A semi-conductor wafer polishing machine having a polishing pad assembly and a wafer holder includes a support positioned adjacent the polishing pad assembly. This support has at least one fluid inlet connectable to a source of fluid at a higher pressure, at least one fluid outlet connectable to a fluid drain at a lower pressure, and at least one bearing surface over which fluid flows from the source to the drain. The polishing pad is supported by the fluid over the bearing surface for low-friction movement with respect to the support. Similar fluid bearings can be used in the wafer holder. An array of generally parallel grooves is provided on a belt support surface to reduce hydroplaning of a polishing belt. A turbine drive system rotates a wafer chuck in a wafer holder.

    Abstract: A generally cylindrical shaped tool handle holds multiple sizes of tools. The preferred embodiment of the handle is hexagonal shaped and holds multiple sizes of hexagonal tools. The handle includes one or more holding slots each positioned on one of multiple surface faces into which hexagonal tools are inserted and held. Each holding slot is of a size and dimension which corresponds to a hexagonal tool size. In use, a hexagonal wrench is positioned in the appropriate holding slot with the short leg or mounting end of the hexagonal wrench resting in the holding slot and the long leg of the hexagonal wrench extending through a receiving hole formed through the bottom of the slot and the tool handle. The long leg having a proximal end for driving the screw or tool. A lock is then positioned over the short leg of the hexagonal wrench and the holding slot.

Quick change jaws face each other for clamping operations and face away from each other for spreading operations. A two-way drive arrangement is designed having at least an engagement lever. A handle engages the engagement lever when the two-way drive arrangement is engaged, and disengages the engagement lever when the two-way drive arrangement is released. A support structure mount is mounted to the slide bar. A quick release support structure is mounted to the support structure mount providing free-standing capability.

Each magnetic data storage disk includes a surface with a coarsely textured head landing zone and a finely textured data storage area. The coarse texture is applied over the fine texture in the landing zone without forming a step in elevation at the boundary. A method for texturing the magnetic disk includes first applying a fine texture to both the data storage area and the landing zone, and then applying a coarse texture to the landing zone only. Texturing apparatus includes peripheral disk clamps permitting axial compliant movement when the opposed disk surfaces are engaged by balanced, pneumatically biased abrading tools. A free abrasive slurry is introduced to pads carried by the tools.

    Abstract: The disclosure is directed to a method of masonary cutting and to the structure of a novel tool. The tool has twin outwardly splayed and flared chisel like blades which join the handle at a recess groove for waste ejection. The blades are beveled only on their upper edges and are driven forward by hammering on the remove handle end. The method comprises attacking a flat masonary surface at an angle greater than 5 degrees (preferably at 13 degrees) with twin divergent cutting edges beveled only on the upper surfaces and having a flat lower surface. Material is imploded between the blades and ejected at the recess groove without dust formation.

In the transfer operation, the other end of the sleeve is pulled over the dump housing, providing an impervious containment barrier between the dump housing and the interior of the collection drum. The drum has a vent opening with a bushing to which a vent line is attached. A vent line connects the collection drum to the interior of the waste chamber via a valve.
