  • Patent number: 4696252
Abstract: An improved emergency signalling device for use by skiers, hunters and other persons who may be exposed to the outdoors, remote from civilization, and who may in the course of their avocation or occupation become injured or disabled while far removed from contact with assistance. The device comprises a package, which may be secured by straps to a limb or the body of the person, the package containing a signal balloon, a helium container and a reel for paying out a length of tether line together with means for easily inflating the balloon with the helium and sending it aloft to attract the attention of searchers who may be looking for the person in distress. Radar reflective streamers are provided to improve the radar reflectivity of the balloon and thus make it easier to locate by searchers using radar from the air or water.

  • Patent number: 4694693
Abstract: A method for testing a normally closed check valve connected in series with an isolation valve at the outlet of a passive injection system includes adjusting pressure upstream and downstream of the check and isolation valves to an upstream pressure higher than the downstream pressure and then opening and closing the isolation valve. In order to verify proper operation of the check valve, a preoperational test is performed to provide base line data and acceptance criteria. In a typical passive injection system having an accumulator tank, pressure and level changes of liquid in the accumulator tank are recorded during the opening and closing of the isolation valve. The recorded measurements of pressure and level during each test of the check valve are compared with the acceptance criteria to determine whether the check valve operates properly.

  • Patent number: 4690526
Abstract: A prism assembly for a single light valve, full-color projector is disclosed. The prism assembly is adapted to polarize and separate the white illumination light into the three primary colors. Three separate input images corresponding to the information for the red, green and blue components of the full image are applied to separate regions of the light valve photoresponsive layer. The prism assembly comprises three channels, one for each of the primary colors. Each channel polarizes the illumination light into P-polarized colored light which is reflected onto the region of the light valve corresponding to the respective input image. The illumination light in each channel is reflected by the respective region of the light valve as respective beams each including an image bearing component of one polarization state and a second beam component of the opposite polarization state.

  • Patent number: 4687343
Abstract: Deformation dilatometers are described for heating, deforming and cooling a test specimen, as well as for measuring changes in the linear dimensions of that specimen. A ferrous metal specimen, that is held between a fixed and a movable fused silica or quartz platen, first is heated by a high frequency induction coil and then crushed by the application of a hydraulic force to the movable platen. The hydraulic force then is withdrawn and, as the specimen is cooled by a jet of quenching gas, changes in its linear dimension are measured by a linear variable differential transformer which is coupled through ceramic pushrods to the platens. Use of fused silica or quartz platens in deformation dilatometers permits the accurate simulation of steel mill forging and rolling operations and enhances the usefulness of the instruments for studying phase changes in steel and determining optimum heating and quenching rates.

  • Patent number: 4685337
Abstract: A device for gauging hoop stress in a female threaded connector member, the stress being caused by tightening of a tapered male threaded member into the female member, including an annular body dimensioned for surrounding the female member with a firm fit therebetween, the body including two discrete complementary half-sections. Each of the half-sections includes an overlapping segment on one end, and each segment has an aperture therein. A pin is provided for insertion through the aligned apertures. An anchor block is fixed to each of the otherwise free ends of the annular body, each of the blocks having a cutout portion therein. A weak link having a tensile strength less than that of the annular body is provided for insertion into the cutout portions for joining the blocks. The weak link clamps the body about the female member and breaks under the application of a predetermined hoop stress to the female member.

  • Patent number: 4685785
Abstract: A integral plastic frame for holding a film slide includes a central window, a recessed bearing surface, which surrounds the window and serves to contact the film slide when it has been inserted to cover the window. The transparency as it is inserted and in its final position is guided between the bearing surface and the retaining elements facing the bearing surface. The retaining elements substantially consist of continuous retaining strips, which extend in the direction in which the film slide is inserted. The retaining strips are attached to mutually opposite sides of a central window of the integral frame member by means of narrow connecting webs, which extend at right angles to the direction in which the film slide is inserted. The plastic material of the frame member is so elastically flexible that an opening through which the film slide can be inserted is formed between the retaining strip and the bearing surface.

  • Patent number: 4684771
Abstract: An axially reciprocatable actuation rod is conducted out of a vacuum chamber and connected with one of the terminals of a vacuum switch by a connecting conductor. In order to exploit the short switching stroke which is characteristic of vacuum switches and thereby reduce the construction expenditure for the connecting conductor, the connecting conductor is constructed as a yoke whose ends are forked. These opposed ends of the connecting conductor engage at one end thereof the actuation rod and at the other end thereof a protrusion on the terminal extending in the direction of the actuation rod. The opposed ends frictionally engage the actuation rod and the protrusion elastically at mutually opposing locations thereof.

  • Patent number: 4684265
Abstract: Heat fluxmeter incorporating a row of thermistors, whose electrical resistance varies significantly with the temperature and which are arranged on the outer surface of the container for accurately measuring the temperature thereof. The range of temperatures in the vicinity of the container is determined by means of a second row of thermistors. It is possible to deduce therefrom the heat flux leaving the container, i.e. the power emitted by the calorigenic material contained therein. The considerable sensitivity of this meter makes it possible to use it without excessively disturbing the thermal equilibrium so that the measurement can be carried out in a very short time.
