Abstract: A method for allocating space among a plurality of queues in a buffer includes sorting all the queues of the buffer according to size, thereby to establish a sorted order of the queues. At least one group of the queues is selected, consisting of a given number of the queues in accordance with the sorted order. A portion of the space in the buffer is allocated to the group, responsive to the number of the queues in the group. A data packet is accepted into one of the queues in the group responsive to whether the data packet will cause the space occupied in the buffer by the queues in the group to exceed the allocated portion of the space.

  • Patent number: 7792054
Abstract: This invention provides a tool for reliability evaluation and performance analysis of an IP backbone network by using the network packet loss ratio as the main measurement. A queuing model and algorithm is presented for calculating packet loss at congested interfaces or links. A reliability model is presented for considering network hardware component failures such as router failures, ATM switch failures, and physical link failures. Based on the measurement and models presented, a network reliability and performance (NetRAP) apparatus calculates IP network reliability and performance measurements. The NetRAP apparatus uses the network topology, a traffic matrix, and the reliability parameters of a network as inputs and calculates the network packet loss ratio and sigma score, and provides a list of heavily congested links under non-failure or different single failure conditions.

  • Patent number: 7738359
Abstract: A system, device, and method for managing alternate site switching in an optical communication system recovers from failures/degradations that are uncorrected by the core optical communication network. When an uncorrected failure/degradation is detected, communications for a protected end-system are switched from a primary end-system to a backup end-system. The backup end-system may be selected a priori, for example, during connection establishment, in order to reduce switching time once a decision has been made to switch communications from the primary end-system to the backup end-system. Provisions are made for completing the alternate site switching within a specified amount of time. Load balancing may be used to further reduce switching time from the primary end-system to the backup end-system. This alternate site switching augments the various protection mechanisms provided by the core optical communication network in order to provide end-to-end protection for the optical communication path.

  • Patent number: 7724661
Abstract: An ATM network traffic shaper is implemented in hardware. The traffic shaper shapes transmit data on one or more virtual circuits (VCs) according to the specified quality of service (QoS) parameters. Thus, the traffic shaper provides for the delivery of associated data cells in accordance with the specified QoS parameters. The traffic shaper is scalable in that the number of supported VCs can be increased with a relatively small increase in the size of the device and associated logic gates. The traffic shaper supports constant bit rate (CBR), variable bit rate (VBR), and unknown bit rate (UBR) service types and generates cell transmit requests with zero cell delay variation (CDVT). The traffic shaper also provides very high resolution in terms of bit rate specification. Varying shaping resolutions are achieved by varying a shaping interval time (SIT) generated by a SIT counter.

  • Patent number: 7706260
Abstract: Dynamic rate limiting of background traffic to alleviate congestion in the access network is enabled. ICMP echo round-trip times and ICMP losses to a nearby node outside the local area and just beyond the divergence in end-to-end paths are measured, allowing unambiguous discrimination of nearby from distant congestion points. Using round-trip time samples, either short-run delay or short-run variance in delay can be measured to estimate congestion. When combined with an appropriate control law, background traffic can be rapidly reduced to allow interactive traffic to traverse unhindered through the access network. The described system and methods can be implemented in the application-layer and without any additional support from the network.

  • Patent number: 7697466
Abstract: At a base station apparatus, known pilot signals for use in channel estimation are transmitted, and in addition thereto MCS pilot signals that are used to perform adaptive modulations respectively corresponding to a plurality of modulation schemes are multiplexed and output. A mobile station apparatus dispreads the respective MCS signals out of the multiplex signal, compares these to known symbols patterns, and sends the MCS pilot signals that show a matching relationship to the base station apparatus as a mobile station reception result. Upon receiving the mobile station reception result from the mobile station apparatus, the base station apparatus selects the modulation scheme of the optimum modulation level for the downlink signals. This configuration makes it possible to switch the modulation schemes in an accurate and simple way.

  • Patent number: 7675848
Abstract: A technique treats a protected forwarding adjacency (FA) as a dynamic entity in that it allows a backup tunnel associated with the FA to carry traffic for the FA, when it's primary tunnel has failed, up to a predetermined amount of time. If after the predetermined amount of time has elapsed and the FA has not recovered (e.g., the primary tunnel has not been reestablished), a network topology change is automatically triggered causing the network to converge on a new network topology. By triggering the network topology change, a path that is more optimal than the path associated with the backup tunnel may be subsequently determined to carry the traffic.

  • Patent number: 7633896
Abstract: An optimized gateway selection process of the present invention is based on a universal mobility manager (UMM), a component for inter-technology location management. The UMM is capable of holding location information for diverse cellular networks, as well as for Internet telephony systems. For cellular networks, UMM acts as a traditional HLR; for an Internet telephony network, it acts as the entities that are responsible for user/terminal registration (registrar in SIP, gatekeeper in H.323) and address resolution (proxy server in SIP, gatekeeper in H.323). An optimal gateway selection is possible based on location related information provided by the UMM which had not previously been available. Utilizing the newly available information enables a gateway to be selected which may, for example, enable the circuit switched portion of a call to now be minimized.
