  • Patent number: 4270401
Abstract: A gear tooth, particularly for internal gears, such as a wobble gear transmission, has its angle of slew defined as a fraction of the radii of the pitch circles of a gear bearing the tooth and a gear adopted to engage with it. The critical factor in calculating the correct profile for a circular-arc gear tooth is (1-cos .theta.) where cos .theta.=r/R and r and R are the radii of the above pitch circles.

  • Patent number: 4266437
Abstract: A ball screw nut assembly of the type in which a nut having an internal helical groove is telescoped over a shaft having an opposing helical groove and an endless train of balls is disposed in the grooves so that the nut travels axially along the shaft as the latter is turned relative to the nut. Travel of the nut along the shaft is limited by a stop which is mounted on the shaft and engaged by the nut. As the nut approaches the stop, the balls leave the groove in the shaft and roll on a cylindrical portion of the shaft whereby the nut is no longer positively driven and the force with which the nut impacts the stop is substantially reduced. Return of the balls into the groove on the shaft is aided by making the diameter of the cylindrical portion slightly greater than the root diameter of the shaft grooves and by utilizing a resilient stop.

  • Patent number: 4261224
Abstract: A valve actuator which is operable alternatively by a motor and manually. The motor is coupled into the drive train for the actuator through a planetary gear device so as to enable rapid actuation of the valve by the motor. The motor is coupled through a special one-way coupling to the sun-gear drive of the planetary assembly which permits the motor to drive the sun gear in either direction upon rotation of the motor but prevents rotation of the sun gear when the motor is arrested. A handwheel is coupled to the ring-gear drive of the planetary assembly through a worm and pinion so that the handwheel may then drive the ring gear under manual operation, but the ring gear is retained against rotation by the worm pinion when the handwheel is idle. The planet-gear drive serves as the normal output of the planetary assembly and is coupled to the valve spindle through a torque-limiting device.

  • Patent number: 4261218
Abstract: A speed reducer comprising a worm gear of the type suitable for driving proportioning pumps. The worm is rotated by an input shaft which is suitably journalled within a speed reducer housing wherein the input shaft bearings are respectively carried within aligned housing openings. Either one of the input shaft bearings is adjustable by means of a threaded hole in the housing where the input shaft is inserted. A threaded adjusting piece is screwed against the race of one of the bearings that hold the input shaft to precisely adjust the longitudinal alignment of the worm relative to the gear and to precisely load the two bearings that hold the input shaft to substantially eliminate excessive wear, vibration and chatter.

  • Patent number: 4259875
Abstract: Gear tooth profiles are disclosed that afford a higher torque capacity than that of previously disclosed fine-pitch gearing. To offset the weakness in bending of fine teeth, the transmitted force is divided among two to five times as many teeth as in conventional gearing, by using very low pressure angles, and the tooth interference that would occur between meshed involute teeth of equally small pressure angle is avoided by using profiles of shorter relative radius of curvature. The tooth flexibility needed to offset tooth separation at the ends of the line of action and to insure an equitable division of the load among the maximum number of teeth is obtained by deepening the dedenda. The resulting tooth form increases torque capacity by maximizing the transverse contact ratio and minimizes operating noise by increasing the axial contact ratio.

  • Patent number: 4259879
Abstract: A control device for a bicycle derailleur cooperates with a control lever to control the derailleur through a control wire and absorb a change in length in the wire. The control device includes a positioning plate which serves to position the lever and is supported relatively rotatably under resistance greater than strength of a return spring at the derailleur, with respect to one of the lever and a fixing member supporting the lever, and is made freely rotatable with respect to the other, so that during operation of the lever for changing the bicycle speed the positioning plate, when subjected to a wire tension over a predetermined value, is secured to the lever or fixing member and, when subjected to a tension less than the predetermined value, is allowed to be freely rotatable, thereby automatically absorbing a change of length in the wire.

  • Patent number: 4258584
Abstract: A worm gear is provided having a rotary worm screw which drives a reciprocal ball nut by means of a ball chain with coacting helical channeling effecting a raceway between the worm screw and ball nut. The invention resides in providing a ball return member in the interior of the worm screw such that a smaller number of balls in the ball chain may be used than has heretofore been possible in the prior art, and wherein friction is substantially reduced by the use of a smaller ball return channel in a median plane of the ball return member connecting at its ends with radial inlet and outlet channels. A considerable reduction in friction is achieved by the use of novel plastic bushings at the entrance and exit openings into the ball return member which greatly reduces the wear on the components.
