  • Patent number: 6589284
Abstract: Conventional modular sockets for ball joint prostheses usually consist of a metal socket housing and a skid-type shell inserted in the housing. Ceramic skid-type shells are usually press-fitted in the socket housing. The socket housing may become stiff, thereby causing a migration of the generic sockets. If the skid-type shell is inserted improperly, material may chip off at the edge of the skid-type shell. Due to the various designs of sockets, skid-type shells with different outer diameter have to be made available for every gliding surface diameter. The invention provides for a ceramic skid-type shell (2) that is rigidly inserted into a biocompatible metal ring (5). Said ring (5) is provided with at least three radially outwards extending fixing elements (6). Said fixing elements (6) engage with respective recesses (8) in the socket housing (7). The ring (5) is spaced apart from the socket housing (7) by a gap (14).

  • Patent number: 6589285
Abstract: Surface irregularities are removed from the inner wall of a femur cavity, preferably tapered. A tamp having an opening and a socket is disposed in the cavity. The tamp may be one of a plurality of tamps each having a different length for the opening. A guide, one of a plurality, fits snugly in the opening. The guide has a collar which cooperates with the tamp socket to limit the movement of the guide into the tamp. A working portion of each guide below the intermediate position has a bulbous shape which is tapered in accordance with the femur taper. Bone fragments between the guide working portion and the femur inner wall are packed against the inner wall when the tamp and the guide are driven into the femur cavity. Numerals on the guide adjacent a slot in the tamp indicate the disposition of the guide in the tamp.

  • Patent number: 6581904
Abstract: A solenoid valve includes an electromagnetic drive unit for generating a magnetomotive force when being fed with electric power. There are a controlled-fluid passage and an accommodation chamber containing the electromagnetic drive unit. A partition wall defines a part of the controlled-fluid passage. A valve opening extends through the partition wall. A shaft extending through the valve opening is driven by the electromagnetic drive unit. A valve member fixed to the shaft moves into and out of contact with the partition wall to block and unblock the valve opening in accordance with movement of the shaft. A thin-film sealing member made of rubber-based resilient material operates for airtightly separating the controlled-fluid passage and the accommodation chamber from each other. A communication passage connects the accommodation chamber and an exterior. An orifice provides a smaller effective cross-sectional area of the communication passage.

  • Patent number: 6488260
Abstract: A fail safe valve actuator is disclosed that is powered by an electric motor which drives through a wrap spring clutch and a centrifugal brake configured to absorb a portion of the energy released when the power fails and the valve stem is moved rapidly to its fail safe position by an actuator spring. The valve member is held in operating position by a solenoid. When power fails, a spring moves the valve stem in the other direction to move the valve member to its fail safe position. A torque limiting device is mounted adjacent the output end of a gear train to protect the gear train and the electric motor from the high torque created when the valve stem abruptly stops moving when the valve member reaches its operating position.

  • Patent number: 6416032
Abstract: The present invention discloses an expansion valve of an air conditioning system for an automobile which does not employ a conventional method that opens and shuts in response to a motion of a pin and ball and can control a flow of a refrigerant and control linearly a flow rate of a refrigerant flow into an evaporator by using holes of a fixed hole plate fixed to a valve body and holes of a rotatable cam which is rotated by a motion of a pin moved upward and downward in response to a pressure difference between an outlet of an evaporator of an expansion valve and an interior of a pressure proof barrel. In the expansion valve of the present invention, it is possible to prevent a huntting phenomenon a reverse flow of the refrigerant into the evaporator and a noise caused by a ball, which have been generated in a conventional expansion valve, from creating.
