The HMD is operable to display images superimposed over the field of view. When the wearable computing device determines that a target device is within its environment, the wearable computing device obtains target device information related to the target device from a programmed local tag. The target device information may include information that defines a virtual control interface for controlling the target device and an identification of a defined area of the target device on which the virtual control image is to be provided. The wearable computing device controls the HMD to display the virtual control image as an image superimposed over the defined area of the target device in the field of view.

The network coordinates the functions of recognizing the user's requirements, keeping real-time information of participation and of amounts available from merchants, and settling commercial transactions via a clearinghouse. The user is informed of locations of merchants within a preselected distance, and selects a merchant. The system provides the merchant authentication criteria and the user provides identification information for comparison to the criteria. Authentication to the network is done without furnishing a credit card. When authorization is granted, a user is only granted a one-time token for access. This structure facilitates PCI compliance.

Once a duplicate object is located, one of the portable devices reads a machine readable feature on the duplicate object, and the portable device calls a service offered by a server to retrieve a data value corresponding to the duplicate item from a database. This data value is then sent to the local terminal invoking a service offered by the terminal to replace the temporary object number with the data value corresponding to the duplicate item.
