  • Patent number: 4108569
Abstract: In a rotodynamic pump intended for operation at high pressures e.g. 2000 p.s.i. and for pumping contaminated fluids e.g. corrosive water, high pressure sealing assemblies are provided at the through-openings in the pump casing for the pump shaft. Each assembly includes a pair of axially spaced mechanical seals, and each seal comprises a rotor portion fixed to the pump shaft and a stator portion axially movable into sealing engagement with the rotor portion, the stators being located intermediate the rotor portions. A busing is located between the seals and includes conduits supplying oil at a pressure above pump pressure to the innermost seal whence the oil is reduced in pressure and passed to the outermost seal, so that oil is delivered to the facing ends of the stators. The oil serves for lubrication of the sealing interfaces and for the prevention of egress of contaminated material through said innermost seal.

  • Patent number: 4099890
Abstract: An impeller type pump has a pump body consisting of a front casing and a back casing. Each of the casings comprises a ceramic main portion and a protection member covering the main portion. The protection members of both the main portions are interconnected with each other at their confronting marginal portions through a continuous packing. Those confronting marginal portions of both the main portions which are adjacent to a pump chamber defined by inner surfaces of both the main portions are provided each with an annular rib such that the annular ribs of both the main portions define a narrowed clearance restricting the flow of waste water therebetween, resulting in reduction of wear of the packing.

  • Patent number: 4098558
Abstract: A preassembled unit or inner cartridge for a multi-stage barrel type centrifugal pump including bearings, seals, balancing device, impellers and diffusers is aligned, balanced and pressed together into assembled position by a resilient means for stressing the parts against a pair of spaced handling clamps at opposite ends of the preassembled unit which permits the shaft to act as an elongated tie bolt to hold the preassembled unit or cartridge so that it can be installed or removed easily from the fixed outer casing of the multi-stage barrel type centrifugal pump. The unit or cartridge is preassembled and aligned in a special supporting frame which duplicates the engagement shoulder and end face on the pump casing so that all adjustments can be made easily and precisely at a point away from the pump.

  • Patent number: 4097187
Abstract: This invention relates to a vane assembly for a split-shaft gas turbine engine. The invention relates to a vane assembly which is placed in the hot gas stream to control diffusion and to deflect the hot gas just prior to passage through the blades of the power wheel. The vane assembly is characterized by having each controlling and deflecting blade constructed in two cooperating parts, a forward portion of the vane which is hollow and stationary to control diffusion and a trailing portion which is allowed to pivot through a small angle to control deflection. The vane assembly is constructed in sections to have two complete vanes per section and the sections are fitted into circumferential slots in the casing of the turbine. The vane tip actuators are passed through the turbine casing and are fitted to the trailing portions of each vane so that the trailing portions of the entire assembly move as a unit by a single control mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4097186
Abstract: Multi-Stage ring type centrifugal pumps for pumping fluids are adapted to receive an inducer shaped and sized generally but not necessarily to replace the impeller and diffuser of the first pumping stage of the given centrifugal pump. The preferred type of inducer for this use has an enlarged inlet diameter, at least two inducer vanes; an outlet diameter less than the inlet diameter to provide generally convergent flow passages, and the selected inlet vane angle for the inducer vanes will provide a positive incidence angle to increase the pressure at the suction inlet of the associated stage impeller into which the fluid being pumped is delivered. The inductor is shown in various forms. One embodiment includes an integral hub, inducer vanes and outer shroud. A second male type embodiment includes an integral hub and inducer vanes, and an operatively associated fixed outer shroud matched to the outer periphery of the inducer vanes.

  • Patent number: 4089621
Abstract: A tank for oil or other hydraulic fluid is kept under a few pounds of air pressure during operation to keep air from being drawn into the fluid and to aid its flow to the pump. The pressure is provided dependably and quickly by a small air pump driven whenever the hydraulic pump is driven. A bleed-off discharge causes prompt dissipation of the pressure on shutdown so as not to cause oil leakage while the associated hydraulic pump is idle. The hydraulic level is below the pump shaft level so there will be no leakage by gravity.

  • Patent number: 4087994
Abstract: A centrifugal pump having an impeller with a fingerlike projection on each blade extending radially outward from the impeller body into the outer annulus of the pumping chamber. These projections cut through the liquid that has been centrifuged to the outer annulus causing a turbulence which draws a portion of the liquid into the body of the impeller for mixing with trapped air. This mixing action causes the air to be centrifuged with the liquid and alleviates air locking in the pump and is especially valuable in a laundry washing machine where, in the last portion of the liquid extraction cycle, air and soap bubbles are likely to be included in the liquid.

  • Patent number: 4087199
Abstract: A high temperature turbine shroud assembly for an aircraft gas turbine engine comprising a plurality of arcuate ceramic blocks arranged in a ring. The blocks are supported by a pair of annular support members which retain the blocks in the assembly. Spring-like fingers associated with the support members apply a preloaded force against a pair of slanted dovetail surfaces on the blocks to force the blocks against rigid stops formed upon the annular support members, thereby establishing their proper radial position within the assembly. The preload applied by the fingers accommodates the thermal expansion differences between the ceramic blocks and the metallic support members. In an alternative embodiment, the blocks are retained between cooperating rigid legs extending from the annular support members and wedged radially inwardly into position by a preloaded spring contacting the back side of the blocks.

  • Patent number: 4086022
Abstract: A plurality of skewed slots of a particular shape are provided within a compressor casing adjacent at least one stage of compressor blade tips, the slots having an axial length greater than that of the adjacent blade tips. The slots are provided such that upon occurrence of compressor surge or stall, the stagnating air occurring about the blade row may be directed by the slots downstream of the compressor blade row back into the main stream of fluid passing through the compressor. By such an arrangement, the slots provide a compressor in which the air flow and pressure ratio may be increased before reaching compressor stall or surge.
