  • Patent number: 6758630
Abstract: A snow and ice melting system for roads including a system of heating coils disposed below an upper surface of a roadway. The system of coils are arranged in a serpentine configuration whereby a majority of a surface area of the roadway is in contact with the heating coils. A system of laser heaters are disposed within side surfaces of curbs of the roadway in a spaced relationship. The laser heaters direct a ray of heat over the upper surface of the roadway. A weather sensitive activation sensor is secured to a top surface of a traffic light. The activation sensor is in communication with the system of heating coils and the system of laser heaters.

  • Patent number: 6558260
Abstract: A torsional vibration damping apparatus which operates between the crankshaft of the engine and the input shaft of the transmission in a motor vehicle has two flywheels which are rotatable relative to each other against the opposition of one or more dampers installed in a fluid-containing chamber of the flywheel which is connected to the crankshaft. The chamber has one or two annular compartments for the coil springs of the damper or dampers, and such coil springs are caused to store energy by a flange which is connected to the flywheel that drives the input shaft of the transmission and by integral or separately produced stops-of the flywheel which is connected with the crankshaft. The flange cooperates with the respective flywheel to form a flow restrictor which opposes the flow of fluid from and into the compartment or compartments of the chamber in response to expansion or contraction of the coil springs.

  • Patent number: 6186703
Abstract: An improved method and system for attaching a welded wire grid-work panel to a plurality of face panels of a retaining wall. The method first begins by providing a plurality of stackable face panels, each face panel having a plurality of anchor links fixed within a back portion of the face panels. Each of the anchor links forms a vertical loop extending outwardly generally perpendicular to the back portion of the face panels. Additionally, each anchor link includes two legs extending laterally from each anchor link within the face panel. Next, a first tier of the face panels is disposed at the bottom of the embankment being erected. Soil is then back-filled behind the first tier of panels to a level of the anchor links disposed within the first tier of face panels. A welded wire grid-work panel, which extends perpendicularly from the back portion of the face panels into a soil embankment, is positioned so that a plurality of wire loops at the edge of the grid-work panel aligns with the vertical loops.

  • Patent number: 6179523
Abstract: A method for installing an offshore pipeline is disclosed in which the inner and outer pipes are structurally connected at a terminal end of a pipe-in-pipe flowline and centralizers are placed in the annulus to provide lateral support and maintain concentricity between the two pipes and to prevent buckling of the inner pipe. The working end of the pipeline is suspended under construction in a substantially vertical position within slips at the weld floor of a J-lay installation barge and sections of inner and outer pipe are added. Inner pipe is added by sections by grasping and orienting the section of inner pipe to a vertical position and the section is brought into abutting position with the inner pipe at the working end of the pipeline under construction, welded in place, and the weld is coated with an arc resistant material.

  • Patent number: 6138752
Abstract: The invention is a method to determine stress within a formation, the method comprising the steps of: providing a closed reference pressure volume within the formation; providing a flexible diaphragm which can be exposed on one side to formation, and on the other side to the closed reference pressure volume; providing a switch wherein the switch generates a signal based on the diaphragm being in a position indicative of the diaphragm being flexed by pressure on one side of the diaphragm being greater than pressure on the other side of the diaphragm; cycling a pressure within the reference pressure volume to between a pressure at which a signal is generated and a pressure at which a signal is not generated; and determining the formation stress as the pressure at which the signal changes. Another aspect of the invention is the apparatus useful in this method. The switch is preferably an electrical contact that is activated by movement of the diaphragm.

  • Patent number: 6132140
Abstract: A water dam includes a number of loading pallets arranged side-by-side and inclined outward from the water supported by supports. Membranes are placed on loading pallets and extend a distance in front of the pallets under the water. The membranes may be held down in the front edge by stones, sand bags, etc. initially to hold the membrane in place. The supports are triangular and made of U-shaped sheet metal beams. The one on which the pallets rest grips over the adjoining legs of two loading pallets to hold these together. To the rear the support is extended sufficient to secure that it cannot be tilted by the water. To achieve this and achieve a good grip on the ground the inclination is preferably, resulting in great vertical forces on the ground, a good grip on the ground.

  • Patent number: 6129163
Abstract: A flightless rock auger For drilling postholes through rock without the use of hydraulic pressure. The rock auger has a plurality of teeth extending downwardly at a selected angle from the edge of a cylinder connected to a quick connect shaft. The rock auger is utilized for drilling through rock and used in combination with a conventional flighted auger used for drilling postholes in dirt and clay. During a posthole drilling operation, the rock auger is substituted for the flighted auger as needed for drilling through and remove rock or other hard material such as concrete fron the posthole. The rock auger is designed for use at very low revolutions per minute and utilizes only the weight of the auger and shaft and does not require any additional hydraulic pressure for cutting a circular hole through the rock and forming a plug which is to be lodged in the cavity of the rock auger cylinder to be removed from the posthole.

  • Patent number: 6129486
Abstract: A pipe pulling and pushing apparatus and method of operation, which apparatus includes a spring-loaded wedge device seated in a driving apparatus and fitted to a rod or pipe for forcing the rod or pipe beneath a road, pipeline or other barrier where trenching is not feasible. The spring-loaded wedge is characterized by a housing which receives a coil spring positioned to intermittently engage a wedge defined by wedge segments collectively having a rod bore and teeth for selectively gripping the rod or pipe when the spring is fully extended, and releasing the rod or pipe when the spring is compressed. Repetitive gripping and releasing of the rod or pipe by the wedge is effected responsive to operation of the driving apparatus to incrementally drive the rod or pipe through the terrain beneath the barrier. The spring-loaded wedge can also be positioned on the rod or pipe in the driving apparatus to pull the rod or pipe through the terrain beneath the barrier.
