Abstract: A strip-guide assembly for a metal-strip coiler comprises a pressing roll or guide plate adapted to urge the strip into a coiled condition on a mandrel is provided with a four-pivot linkage actuated by a pneumatic/hydraulic positioning device. According to the invention, the latter device comprises a limited stroke pneumatic cylinder having a plunger portion which forms a cylinder for the hydraulically displaced piston whose rod is connected to the linkage, the pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders being independently pressurizable.
Abstract: Method and apparatus for forming scroll members comprising an end plate having an involute wrap rigidly affixed thereto. The end plate and involute wrap are precision formed, e.g., by casting, either as an integral element or as two separate elements and then the scroll member is coined to the desired dimensional accuracy and finish. If a separate end plate and an involute wrap are provided for coining, then they are rigidly joined during coining, an embodiment which permits the use of two different materials and/or the attainment of two different surface characteristics for the involute wrap and the end plate.
Abstract: A die member has a conical bore with a cylindrical extension, and a shallow groove in the conical bore; a conical mandrel with a cylindrical extension fills the conical bore, except for the groove which merges into an annular space between the cylindrical bore and the extension. A metal strip is pulled through the groove and the space is to be folded into a split tube.
Abstract: Apparatus operable to fasten together overlying metal sheets has a cooperating piercing-and-forming punch and die set, which partially sever and displace a localized region of the sheets out of the planes thereof, and a flattening punch which then operates to spread the displaced region sideways and fasten the sheets together with a clenching action. A die mounting for said piercing-and-forming die and a punch mounting for said flattening punch are sequentially and separately operable, respectively, by two hydraulical piston and cylinder arrangements which effect movement thereof relatively to said piercing-and-forming punch. An associated control system comprises pressure sensing devices which sense the operating pressures in hydraulic feeds respectively supplying the piston hydraulic cylinders.
Abstract: The method of forming helical springs and the installation for carrying same into effect relate to manufacture of springs and can be used with particular advantage for the purpose of forming helical springs by winding hot bars on a rotating mandrel.According to the invention, the winding of the bar on the mandrel is effected in the plane of the bar feed by pressing the bar against the mandrel over part of the circumference thereof for the purpose of forming spring coils. Each formed coil is relieved of the forming pressure and moved by a predetermined amount to the free end of the mandrel in order to set the coil pitch.The installation for carrying the method into effect comprises a plurality of sectors mounted equidistantly round the mandrel, the sectors being adapted for moving radially for applying a pressure force to the bar and for making a traversing movement along the mandrel in order to pass under a bar guiding arrangement and a pitch setting arrangement comprised in the installation.

Abstract: A machine and process for removing adhesively fastened base cups from plastic bottles, comprising conveyor means for transporting said bottles and a pair of inwardly opposed extensible fingers, projecting at an angle of about 25.degree. to about 30.degree. upward from the vertical, to engage each base cup and separate it from the bottle. Optionally, the machine may include means to cut the bottle into sections for more remunerative scrap recovery.
Abstract: While liquid coolant in the form of pressurized sprays is being delivered onto the upstream sides of the working rolls in a rolling mill across the width of the moving metal strip, pressurized fluid jets are directed against the opposite end portions of the working rolls outwardly of the longitudinal edges of the strip, said jets being aimed axially outwardly toward the ends of the working rolls and somewhat upwardly and downwardly in relation to the top and bottom faces of the strip. Closely beyond the downstream sides of the working rolls, additional pressurized fluid jets are directed downwardly and upwardly against the moving strip with the air concentrated near its longitudinal edges to dislodge any remaining coolant.
Abstract: A pressure-actuated release mechanism is assembled using a prebuckled pipe segment as a pressure-triggering mechanism. The trigger mechanism is employed to attach buoys to an offshore structure or pipeline under construction. The attached buoys move with the structure or newly added pipe string toward the sea bottom, easing the descent. As a preselected external pressure is sensed, the buckle in the pipe segment propagates and the trigger mechanism actuates, releasing buoys from the structure or pipeline as each buoy in turn reaches the same depth or pressure.
Abstract: Metal wire is descaled by passing it through a series of rollers which bends the wire and causes the scale to loosen and fall off. Two sets of rollers are positioned in planes 90.degree. to each other, through which the wire passes to bend it in different directions. The rollers are pivoted between a wire feed through position and a wire bending position, with the wire bending position being predetermined in relation to the diameter of the wire being descaled. A cam and follower arrangement is provided which upon movement of a center roller causes the breaker rollers to be positioned in the proper location for bending the size of wire being fed through the apparatus.
Abstract: A storage and manipulating tool for replacement plunger heads includes a set of storage cavities in which replacement plunger heads (syringe tips) are stored. Each plunger head has an annular flange, and a socket for receiving the end of a cooperating plunger shaft and is stored in its cavity with its socket facing the open end of the storage cavity. The tool also includes elongated passage defining structure for receiving a related plunger shaft. The cross-sectional dimension of the elongated passage is uniform along its length and is less than the annular flange portion of a replacement plunger head stored in a cavity such that axial movement of a plunger shaft in the elongated passage is effective to remove the attached plunger head. The exposed attachment end of the plunger shaft is then inserted into a storage cavity to attach a replacement plunger head for removal from the storage cavity without handling the sealing surfaces of the plunger head.

Abstract: An apparatus for handling pipe to effect high speed machining operations is disclosed that includes means for moving the pipe from a pipe rack onto a conveyor, moving the pipe longitudinally into the chuck of a threading machine or the like, clamping the pipe in the chuck, transferring the pipe from the conveyor to one or more steady rests, and supporting the steady rests on flexible wall air cylinders that will allow the steady rest to move as required to support the pipe which, because it is not straight, will whip and move laterally as it is rotated at the speeds required for high speed machining.
Abstract: An oil slinger is held in place on a shaft by an O-ring which serves as a detent when the shaft is at rest and as a static seal when the shaft is rotating. Because the slinger is held only by a detent action in the rest position, the slinger can be moved aside during assembly and disassembly of the companion bearing and seal structure and thereby provide greater access.

Abstract: A pre-closed slide mount has two sides secured together defining an internal pocket to retain a film transparency T inserted edgewise through an entranceway in one edge of the slide mount, which has a window for viewing. A retraction clearance slot at one end of the entranceway may provide clearance for the bowed filmstrip pusher S to be retracted while lateral movement 38 of the slide mount commences. The transparency T is cut from the leading end of the filmstrip S while said end is entirely outside of the entranceway into the slide mount. A reciprocatable pawl and its associated reciprocating drive means produces a forward stroke F of the filmstrip S equal to the length of the transparency T plus an additional extent of forward travel sufficient for pushing the transparency T completely into said pocket. Then, the filmstrip is retracted R by a distance sufficient for completely removing the film strip from the loaded slide mount.
Abstract: A die-head of a cutting machine having a pair of relatively rotatable annular plates which retractably hold therebetween cutting tools extending in radial directions, one of the plates being provided with a tool retracting lever which is pivotably mounted thereto and which is directly engaged by a projection provided on the other plate, the lever being pivotally moved by a workpiece which extends axially in the plates.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for handling large articles, such as heavy rolls of paper and the like, is disclosed. At least three composite spacer units, each constructed from a plate and a cylindrical spacer member secured thereto, are attached to a shield fastened on the bottom of each article so as to provide a space beneath each article for receiving lifting members inserted under the article.

Abstract: A spring coiling machine comprises two cooperating rotatable wire feeding rollers and a driving device for said wire feeding rollers by which said rollers may be rotated in order to feed a wire in its longitudinal direction between said rollers to a spring forming station, where wire bending tools are provided to cause the wire, as it reaches said station, to be successively bent into a generally helical shape in order to form a coiled spring by being brought into contact with said bending tools with successive portions thereof, and where a separate movable pitch controlling tool is provided to control the pitch of said spring along the length thereof through engagement with said wire. A cam follower is connected to said pitch controlling tool to control the position thereof through cooperation with a movable cam curve operatively connected to said driving device. Said cam curve is arranged for reciprocating rectilinear movement in unison with a reciprocating gear rack included in said driving device.
Abstract: A plug for use in a piercing and elongating mill characterizing in that an adherent durable surface layer consisting essentially of iron oxides, i.e. FeO, Fe.sub.3 O.sub.4, Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 or mixtures thereof is formed on the surface of the plug by spraying said molten iron oxide powder onto the plug surface to form said layer. The powder may also contain oxides of chromium, nickel, cobalt, copper, manganese and alloys thereof. The plug is preferably coated with a layer of nickel aluminum before the iron oxide powder is sprayed thereon.
