  • Patent number: 4636187
Abstract: In the erection of rectangular tray-type cartons from blanks of foldable sheet material, corner tabs which are to be uppermost in the erected carton are first folded up from the plane of the blank, which is then passed through a die by a punch to form the side wall. On completion of the stroke of the punch, the pair of opposed elongate panels which carry the uppermost tabs are folded outwardly by folding bars carried by the punch. The partially erected carton is then transferred to a continuously moving conveyor and the other pair of elongate panels are folded outwardly by oscillating fingers and plough bars. The upstanding tabs are then heated by travelling hot air jets and pressed down by pressure rollers to seal them to the other tabs and complete the horizontal peripheral flange which extends continuously around the carton.

  • Patent number: 4633700
Abstract: Crosshead and tie-rod assemblies, from which a frame for a forging press is constructed, include several sections each of which is comprised of a plurality of overlapping plates which are held together by ties. Auxiliary clearance holes are provided in the outermost sections through which the ties of the intermediate sections can be removed. Alternatively, the ties which hold together the intermediate middle sections are coaxially aligned with the ties in the outer sections. However, to permit withdrawal of the ties from the middle section without dismantling the outer sections, hollow tubular ties are employed in the outer sections and the solid ties of the middle sections can be removed by guiding them through the tubular ties.

  • Patent number: 4633918
Abstract: This invention relates to material handling of helical coils of resistance heating wire, hangers for use in handling the wire coils, an assembly of hangers and coils and a method for handling such coils on hangers wherein the manufacture of resistance heating wire can wind and stretch the wire into a coil for a customer, form eyelets at both ends of the coil that are to be used as electrical contact terminals, and then assemble a plurality of coils side by side in a group with eyelets at each end of the coils being on a respective hanger. The hangers have a sleeve-like handle and an integral L-shaped rod arranged so that the coils can be mounted on the hanger by slipping the rod through the eyelets. The assembly of a pair of hangers and a group of coils can then be shipped as a unit to the customer where the customer need only remove the group of coils as a unit and mount the hangers on a T-shaped rack by slipping the handles over posts on the rack.

  • Patent number: 4633692
Abstract: A device for determining a setting value of a shape operating amount in a continuous rolling mill having shape controlling means therein. As rolling conditions such as thicknesses, width, rolling loads, roll crown, incoming crown, and incoming flatness are inputted, shape operating amounts are set to attain a constant crown ratio corresponding to a product target crown as early as possible in the first n-1 stands or passes such that as many as possible of the final stands or passes maintain the constant crown ratio to improve the final product flatness.

  • Patent number: 4634415
Abstract: A tape tab forming unit for tape roll holders wherein wear is minimized by distributing stress between a slotted cylindrical spring supporting upwardly extending struts on the one hand and a flexible forward strut on the other hand. The cylindrical spring may be formed as part of a tape roll holder or connected to such a holder. The slot in the spring defines forward and rearward spring edges from which the struts extend upwardly. The spring is strengthened by providing a thickened region between the forward and rearward edges. A tape tab is formed by combined rearward flexing of the forward strut and compression of the slotted spring.

  • Patent number: 4631948
Abstract: A rolling stand has a support frame, a pair of small-diameter working rolls defining a workpiece nip open perpendicular to the plane and rotatable about respective horizontal, parallel, and vertically spaced axes. A pair of large-diameter backup rolls are rotatable about respective axes parallel to and vertically flanking the working-roll axes. These backup-roll axes define a vertical plane offset from the working-roll plane. In addition each backup roll bears vertically on the respective working roll and a drive counterrotates the rolls of each roll pair to draw an elongated workpiece of predetermined maximum width generally perpendicular to the planes through the nip. The working rolls are longer than the maximum workpiece width and have end portions projecting axially beyond the workpiece. The rolls are pressed vertically toward the nip to compress and deform the workpiece thereat.

  • Patent number: 4631994
Abstract: A linearly and angularly adjustable holder for a cutting tool having primary and secondary cutting edges includes a basic element, a receptacle element for the cutting tool rotatably mounted on the basic element, and a setting element slidably mounted on the basic element. The receptacle element is mounted on the basic element so as to be pivotal about the point of intersection of the primary and secondary cutting edges of the cutting bit. An adjustment screw 50 whose threaded portion is seated in the basic element and whose head engages a recess in the receptacle element serves to perform the angular adjustment. The linear adjustment is accomplished with the aid of a double threaded adjustment screw which connects a wedge and the basic element and which slidably engages the setting member to control the length of the holder.

  • Patent number: 4630458
Abstract: A bearing isolator assembly particularly for use in a roll mill for isolating the environment from the support shaft bearing. A first isolator ring is non-rotatably mounted on the shaft and is concentric with and rotatable relative to a pair of fixed isolator rings which concentrically surround the shaft and are fixed to a support housing. These isolator rings defines therebetween a narrow clearance space which defines a tortuous path which initially includes a U-shaped labyrinth, one end of which communicates with the environment, and the other end of which communicates with an enlarged annular collection chamber which has a drain port associated therewith. This collection chamber is behind a dam associated with the rotatable isolator ring, and the downstream side of the dam is positioned closely adjacent a radial wall on the fixed isolator ring to define a narrow passage therebetween.

  • Patent number: 4631046
Abstract: A folded paperboard tray suitable for cooking food products contained in the tray in a microwave oven has an interior surface which is coated with a styrene methyl methacrylate copolymer to prevent liquid seepage from the food product through the paperboard. The tray has a peripheral flange formed thereon which is connected to the remainder of the tray by means of a cut score fold line. The use of the cut score fold line prevents the copolymer coating on the tray from tearing away from the edges of the tray when the edges are cut from a stock sheet of coated paperboard.

  • Patent number: 4630463
Abstract: A die particularly adapted to drive a rivet, where the head of the rivet has a relatively steep circumferential side surface. The die engages the rivet head in a manner that initially the middle portion of the die driving surface exerts substantial force into the shank portion of the rivet, after which the die driving surface comes in greater overall driving engagement with the entire rivet head. Further, the die has a circumferential lip which limits lateral movement of the die relative to the rivet head.
