  • Patent number: 6532641
Abstract: A sheet of aluminum is formed to a mold by applying gas pressure. Thermoplastic resin is heated and applied to the aluminum in a selected pattern through a nozzle. In one embodiment, the thermoplastic resin is applied to the aluminum sheet in a hexagonal pattern that transitions to a columnar pattern. In a further embodiment microballons or micro-spheres are added to the heated thermoplastic resin to reduce viscosity. A backing layer of aluminum sheet is formed to the patterned resin composite. Gas forming of the aluminum sheet results in aspect ratios of up to 0.6, and the sheet maintains a clean surface that directly bonds to the applied resin.

  • Patent number: 6532666
Abstract: A hub assembly includes a hub having a flange and a spindle projected from the flange, a housing located around the hub spindle, and an antifriction bearing between the housing and the spindle. The bearing includes an inner race which the spindle initially accommodates in that the spindle has a deformable end over which the inner race is passed. Thereafter, the deformable end is upset into a formed end in a rotary forming procedure that involves forcing the deformable end and a forming tool together while the spindle and tool rotate. The formed end should bear snugly against a back face on the inner race and capture the inner race on the spindle. In the forming procedure the spindle and forming tool are forced together initially in a coarse feed which provides the formed end that bears against the back face of the inner race, then at a fine feed, and finally at a dwell.

  • Patent number: 6530137
Abstract: A method is intended for the thermal insulation of a flexible pipe. The method includes a first step of depositing a thickness of extrudable and rigid insulating material on an outer surface of the pipe, with the pipe moving longitudinally. The insulating material is cooled over a substantially rectilinear part downstream from the deposition area. Then, at least one circumferential slot is formed in the thickness of the rigid insulating material so as to restore flexibility of the pipe coated with the rigid insulating material. The thus-formed pipe includes a flexible inner pipe, a layer of rigid insulating material surrounding the flexible pipe, and at least one circumferential slot cut in the layer of rigid insulating material to allow flex of the heated insulated pipe.

  • Patent number: 6530727
Abstract: The machining head for machining valve seats comprises a driving system, a housing, a carriage feed assembly, a cutting tip mounted on the carriage, and a counterweight assembly. The driving system rotates a machining head on a spindle axis, and further provides independent vertical translation of each of a driving arbor and a spindle, both of which are independent of the rotation of the spindle. The carriage has both forward and backward feed capability for moving the cutting tip radially inward or outward as it cuts. Vertical movement of the arbor is converted into force for moving the carriage by a cantilever pivoting around a fixed point. The counterweight assembly, linked to the arbor by a second cantilever, counterbalances the shift in weight caused by the movement of the carriage in order to maintain dynamic balancing as the machining head rotates.

  • Patent number: 6530143
Abstract: A gap setting apparatus incorporates an air gage to measure the pressure drop (and indirectly the flow rate) of air through a gap of a hydrodynamic bearing, while facing sections of the bearing are moved closer together. The measured pressure drop can be correlated to the actual bearing gap and monitored to determine when the proper gap has been achieved. More particularly, the inner and outer elements of the bearing are clamped in separate carriers and are held in place. The carriers are then moved toward one another so that the inner or shaft portion of the bearing slides into the outer or sleeve portion of the bearing. To accurately set the gap between the two, an air hose with an air gage attached to it is attached to one end of the bearing gap; air is pumped through the bearing gap, exiting through the opposite end of the gap, By testing a set of reference motor parts, a high end and a low end of an acceptable bearing gap range can be established, and the corresponding air gage readings obtained.

  • Patent number: 6526644
Abstract: In a retractable assist grip in which a grip body rotatably supported on a mount is urged into swing motion from the use position to the retracted position, one side surface of a supporting part of the mount is formed integrally with s fulcrum pin extending therefrom. A pin support of a leg of the grip body is journaled on the fulcrum pin. On the other side surface of the supporting part, a recess and a loose-fit pin extending inside the recess from the bottom of the recess are formed coaxially with the fulcrum pin. The leg of the grip body is assembled against relative rotation with a spacer rotatably inserted into the recess and including a pin loose-fitting part for loosely receiving the loose-fit pin therein. A viscidity is provided between the outer periphery of the spacer and the inner periphery of the recess of the mount, thereby forming a damper. Further, a locking pin is retained prior to the mounting of the grip body to the mount.

  • Patent number: 6526647
Abstract: Radial pressure is applied to a turbine generator armature bar using a simple hand held device that can be readily manipulated by a single human operator. A retainer platform has two wedge shaped portions with handles, and by the operator sliding the wedge shaped portions with respect to each other the operative width of the platform may be adjusted, including to slide and lock the platform in a conventional dovetail slot in a stator. An inflatable bladder is positioned on or mounted to the top surface of the platform and is dimensioned so as to apply radial pressure (for example through a filler) to armature bars mounted in the stator. A conduit, preferably having a valve with quick-release actuator in it, extends from the inflatable bladder and connects to a source of gas under pressure.

  • Patent number: 6526650
Abstract: A feed head has a delivery path along which nuts are fed to a pressing station in the feed head, the pressing station having a pressing die which is reciprocated transversely to the delivery path under the action of a press to fasten a nut to a sheet metal member. A cam is provided to reciprocate the pressing die manually to facilitate clearance of blockages in the feed head, and also to hold the pressing die in its lowered position to allow operation of the press without operating the die. A sensor for detecting nuts at the pressing station is positioned on the end of the delivery path, enabling a narrower feed head design. A electrical coupling and nut delivery tube are integrated to facilitate connection in confined spaces.

  • Patent number: 6526639
Abstract: The disk burnishing process is conducted with a contact flying burnishing head wherein the leading edge of the burnishing head is disposed above the surface of the disk, while the trailing edge of the burnishing head makes contact with the surface of the disk. The contact flying configuration of the burnishing head is obtained by controlling the rotating disk RPM in conjunction with the burnishing head design characteristics. In the contact flying burnishing process, the burnishing edges of the several burnishing pads of the head are disposed at different heights relative to the disk surface, such that the leading burnishing pad edges are higher than the trailing burnishing pad edges. In this configuration, high asperities are trimmed by the burnishing pads while low asperities are not. Thus, a disk is properly burnished for subsequent hard disk drive performance with a minimum of surface debris being created by the burnishing process.

  • Patent number: 6519855
Abstract: A method for forming a closed channel structural member having a central portion that is enlarged relative to the end portions thereof is disclosed. Initially, first and second tubes are formed in respective hydroforming dies to have desired shapes that are preferably characterized by a relatively large diameter first end portions and relatively small diameter second end portions. Each of the two tubes is then oriented such that the relatively large diameter first end portions are disposed adjacent to one another. Lastly, the relatively large diameter first end portions are joined together in any conventional manner, such as by butt welding, to form a unitary member characterized by a relatively large diameter central portion extending between a pair of relatively small diameter end portions. The unitary member can be used as a component, such as a side rail, of a vehicle body and frame assembly.
