Patent number: 4300418Abstract: A tool turret mechanism is for use with a machine tool having a rotatable workpiece spindle. The axis of the turret is at a small acute angle to the axis of the workpiece spindle for tool clearance and the turret has first and second surface portions mounting first and second pluralities of OD turning tools and ID turning tools, respectively. The two pluralities of tool mounting surfaces are generally in the same plane. The plurality of OD turning tool mounting surfaces is in a plane which intersects the ID tool mounting surfaces. The turret is asymmetric in that the spacing angles between the OD turning tool mounting surfaces are less than the spacing angles between the ID turning tool mounting surfaces, thereby permitting a greater number of tools to be mounted on a given size turret, and giving greater flexibility in permitting first given numbers of OD and ID tools or, alternatively, a greater number of OD turning tools and a lesser number of ID turning tools.Type: GrantFiled: November 28, 1979Date of Patent: November 17, 1981Assignee: The Monarch Machine Tool CompanyInventors: Nagle V. Patent number: 4296657Abstract: A numerically controlled, dual-turret lathe includes a pair of indexing turrets mounted on respective cross slides which in turn are slidably mounted on respective saddles for movement in the transverse direction of the lathe, the saddles themselves being mounted on a lathe bed for sliding movement in the longitudinal direction of the lathe. The turrets have mounted thereon a cooperative pair of gripper pawls capable of releasably holding work therebetween. As dictated by a prescribed program a numerical control system controls the movements of the cross slides and the saddles so as to cause the gripper pawls to carry the work from a preassigned standby position on the lathe bed into the chuck on the work spindle of the lathe, preparatory to the machining of the work by tools carried by the turrets.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1980Date of Patent: October 27, 1981Assignee: Okuma Machinery Works, Ltd.Inventors: Shoichi Yasuba, Takaharu Ito

Patent number: 4294566Abstract: A cutter insert presenting eight positive cutting edges has a generally rectangular prismatic configuration to permit its securement in a tool holder having a conventional square insert-receiving pocket. The insert has a pair of opposed primary faces, and four rectangular side faces each having a pair of coplanar, flat lands in opposite corners thereof to permit positive location and clamping of the insert. Each side face also has a laterally opposed pair of positive beveled facets formed therein and intersecting the respective primary faces to define neutral cutting edges for the insert. An elongate groove extends intermediate the beveled facets of each side face parallel to the neutral cutting edges and functions as a chip breaker to provide freer cutting and better chip control. In preferred forms, a square pocketed tool holder is complementally configured to advantageously support the cutter insert in a manner to present a negative angle of attack at the work surface.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1980Date of Patent: October 13, 1981Assignee: Carmet CompanyInventor: Gary A. Patent number: 4290720Abstract: The device is primarily designed to be used with vertical milling machines. This device may also be adapted to any machine tool spindle which uses an internally tapered end to hold the tool holder, collets, etc. etc. Due to the fact that this mechanism functions internally, it does not take away any of the machine's capabilities and no modifications are required to the existing spindle. Basically the device is composed of two major parts: the chuck that goes keyed inside the spindle and the air cylinder which is disposed on the side axially opposite from the chuck and fixed to the body of the machine. The chuck has an axially disposed plunger, a compression spring and two sets of spheres connected by a set of pins. The plunger is shaped to force radially outward a first set of spheres which in turn activates a second set of locking spheres to cause them to move radially inward and engage the tool holder.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1979Date of Patent: September 22, 1981Assignee: R. Patent number: RE30746Abstract: A can end trimmer has a main rotary support shaft with a radial turret plate. A plurality of self-contained cutter unit cartridge assemblies have radial head flanges directly connectable to one side of the turret plate with driven members in each cutter unit cartridge automatically engaging control members mounted on the turret plate for effecting movement of a transversely shiftable cutter knife into engagement with an axially fixed cutter knife for effecting rotation of both knives to trim the end from a can held in a vacuum chuck. A shim between the cutter unit cartridge and the turret plate cants the axes of the knife members with respect to the can by a very small amount normally less than 2.0 degrees to effect a smooth burr-free cut of the can end. Stripper pin means surrounds the can being cut which in turn surrounds the axially fixed knife with a reciprocating stripper plate on the pins being easily removed during replacement of the cutter cartridge unit.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1980Date of Patent: September 22, 1981Assignee: Belgium Tool & Die CompanyInventors: Alphonse Stroobants, Daniel S.
