  • Patent number: 5988282
Abstract: A horizontal tree having a vertical bore and a horizontal production passage is landed in a wellhead housing. A tubing hanger lands in the bore and has a vertical passage and a horizontal passage that aligns with that of the tree. A retrievable first plug seals the vertical passage. A tree cap seals in the tree bore above the tubing hanger and has an axial passage. A retrievable second plug having a valve seals the tree cap passage. A vent port extends laterally through the tree cap between its axial passage and outer surface. A pair of seals on the second plug seal above and below the vent port. A tubing annulus passage communicates with the vent port and an annulus passage. The second plug serves as a second pressure barrier to the first plug and blocks the vent port when the valve is closed. The annulus passage is sealed from communication with a void between the plugs. The valve may be opened to release pressure in the void by applying pressure to an upper end of the check valve.

  • Patent number: 5979561
Abstract: A downhole valve for use within a string of tools in a well for controlling a hydraulic activation circuit. The valve has a housing with an inlet and an outlet, defining a portion of the circuit extending between the inlet and the outlet. A moveable piston within the housing in a first position provides communication between uphole and downhole parts of the circuit, and in a second position isolates the uphole and downhole parts of the circuit. A frangible member is constructed to support, in an intact condition, the piston in one of these two positions against a biasing force, and in a shattered condition enables the piston to move in response to the biasing force to the other position. A detonating member extending through the frangible member propagates a detonation wave to shatter the frangible member when desired, closing the valve.

  • Patent number: 5979571
Abstract: A combination metal milling and earth drilling tool, for use in performing a single trip kickoff from a casing in a well bore. The combination milling and drilling tool has a first, relatively more durable cutting structure, such as tungsten carbide, and a second, relatively harder cutting structure, such as polycrystalline diamond. The more durable first cutting structure is better suited for milling metal casing, while the harder second cutting structure is better suited for drilling through a subterranean formation, especially a rock formation. The first cutting structure is positioned outwardly relative to the second cutting structure, so that the first cutting structure will mill through the metal casing while shielding the second cutting structure from contact with the casing. The first cutting structure can wear away while milling through the casing and upon initial contact with the rock formation, thereby exposing the second cutting structure to contact with the rock formation.

  • Patent number: 5960883
Abstract: A downhole power management technique for a downhole well control system maximizes the number of downhole devices which require electrical power. In accordance with this technique, downhole devices which require power and are addressable will be at a low power consumption state (e.g., sleep or dormant mode). When requested by a downhole or surface controller, the downhole device will turn itself on to an active mode and perform its intended function or task (such as transmitting data, acquiring data, actuating a tool or the like). Preferably, only one downhole device is in its active mode at any one time. As a result of this power management technique, the power requirement downhole will be relatively low and substantially constant regardless of the number of downhole devices requiring power.

  • Patent number: 5957223
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reaming or enlarging a borehole using a bi-center bit with a stability-enhanced design. The cutters on the pilot bit section of the bi-center bit are placed and oriented to generate a lateral force vector longitudinally offset from, but substantially radially aligned with, the much larger lateral force vector generated by the reamer bit section. These two aligned force vectors thus tend to press the bit in the same lateral direction (which moves relative to the borehole sidewall as the bit rotates) along its entire longitudinal extent so that a single circumferential area of the pilot bit section gage rides against the sidewall of the pilot borehole, resulting in a reduced tendency for the bit to cock or tilt with respect to the axis of the borehole.
