Patent number: 7963337Abstract: An offshore composite enhanced metallic drilling riser is equipped to enable preloading of the composite shell and the metallic riser. A riser has steel end connectors and a continuous metallic inner liner, encased in a composite shell. A segmented hyperboloid shaped profile is located near each of the end fittings for preloading of the composite and the metallic riser. In one version, both halves of the hyperboloid shape are capable of axial movement by adjusting jack bolts connected to one of the hyperboloid halves. One of the halves is limited in axial movement while the other half moves axially away from the restricted half, the movement simultaneously generates the composite pre-load and the metallic riser pre-load. The other version uses fluid pressure between mating faces of the segments to push them apart.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 2008Date of Patent: June 21, 2011Assignee: Vetco Gray Inc.Inventors: Joseph W. Patent number: 7926574Abstract: A downhole device used to divert fluid flow out of a work string into an annulus. The downhole device is activated by the movement of a plurality of pistons within the downhole device. Fluid flow through a restriction of the downhole device creates an increase in fluid pressure causing the movement of the pistons. The pistons move a flow tube between various locations within the device. In one location, the flow tube prevents fluid flow to the annulus while in another location the flow tube allows fluid flow to be diverted into the annulus. The downhole device may include a locating sleeve having a continuous j-track allowing the flow tube to be selectively retained at the various locations within the downhole device. Fluid flow through the downhole is used to cycle the device between diverting fluid flow to the annulus and forcing fluid flow down the work string.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 2010Date of Patent: April 19, 2011Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: Maximiliano Mondelli, George Krieg, David Hebert, David Robinson

Patent number: 7905285Abstract: A perforating gun and one or more volume-receiving surge canisters can be actuated at a time delay after perforation for creating a dynamic underbalance condition to aid in directing debris out of the perforations and fractures and into the wellbore. A timer and triggering device actuate one or more canisters in parallel or series after a pre-determined time delay or delays which can be related to wellbore conditions following perforation. Use of propellant-type perforating gun further benefits from favorable propellant burn conditions for forming perforations and followed thereafter by a perforation-cleaning underbalance pressure conditions characterized by one or more of an increased rate of change depression of the pressure in the adjacent annulus, a greater magnitude of pressure depression and a longer duration of underbalance.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 2009Date of Patent: March 15, 2011Assignee: Precision Energy Services, Inc.Inventor: David A. Patent number: 7905293Abstract: A hybrid wellhead system is assembled using a plurality of threaded unions, such as spanner nuts or hammer unions, for securing respective tubular heads and a flanged connection for securing a flow control stack to a top of a tubing head spool. The tubing head spool is secured by a threaded union to an intermediate head spool. The intermediate head spool is secured by another threaded union to a wellhead. Each tubular head secures and suspends a tubular string in the well bore. The hybrid wellhead system is capable of withstanding higher fluid pressures than a conventional independent screwed wellhead, while providing a more economical alternative to a flanged, or ranged, wellhead system because it is less expensive to construct and faster to assemble.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 2010Date of Patent: March 15, 2011Assignee: Stinger Wellhead Protection, Inc.Inventors: L. Patent number: 7900708Abstract: Multiple-block downhole anchors and anchor assemblies are provided. A downhole anchor assembly for a tubing string includes an anchor block, a drag block, a biasing arrangement, and a mandrel to be coupled to the tubing string. The anchor block moves, with rotation of the mandrel, between a run position out of contact with a well bore and a set position in contact with the well bore to set the downhole anchor assembly in the well bore. The drag block contacts the well bore at least when the anchor block is out of contact with the well bore. The biasing arrangement biases the anchor block away from the well bore and the drag block toward the well bore. The anchor block is thus protected from the well bore by the drag block, and the biasing arrangement provides for automatic un-setting of the anchor block when torque is removed from the mandrel.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 2008Date of Patent: March 8, 2011Inventor: Marcel Obrejanu

Patent number: 7896091Abstract: A method and apparatus for sealing a wellbore is described herein. A convertible seal includes a sealing element and a valve. The sealing element is in fluid communication with the valve and fluidly blocks a bore of the convertible seal. The sealing element prevents fluid from flowing through the bore until desired. When desired, the sealing element is removed to allow fluid to flow through the bore. Fluid flow in the bore is controlled by the valve. As a result, the convertible seal has been converted to a flow control seal.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2009Date of Patent: March 1, 2011Assignee: Weatherford/Lamb, Inc.Inventors: Scott E. Patent number: 7891417Abstract: Earth formations are characterized by using an array of electrodes which can measure streaming potentials in the formation, and by interpreting the data obtained by the electrodes. The electrodes are placed on a wireline tool, a LWD tool, or in a fixed manner about a completed wellbore. The measured streaming potentials are generated by drilling with an overbearing pressure, slitting the mudcake in a borehole, acid injection, or any of various other manners which causes fluid movement. The data obtained is interpreted to locate fractures, measure formation permeability, estimate formation pressure, monitor drilling fluid loss, detect abnormal pressure, etc. Particularly, a streaming potential voltage transient having a double peak profile signifies the presence of a formation fracture.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2009Date of Patent: February 22, 2011Assignee: Schlumberger Technology CorporationInventors: Min-Yi Chen, Bhavani Raghuraman, Ian Bryant, Michael G Supp, Jose Navarro
