  • Patent number: 7969681
Abstract: Embodiments in accordance with the present invention reduce the structural stress applied to a head, and to achieve the effective control, when the clearance between the head and a disk is adjusted by using a heater. According to one embodiment, the hard disk controller/microprocessing unit (HDC/MPU) controls a slew rate of a heater at the time of TFC (Thermal Fly height Control). In response to processing conditions, a HDC/MPU changes a slew rate of the output of electric current/voltage applied to the heater. This makes it possible to reduce the head stress, and to achieve the effective TFC. To be more specific, with reference to a temperature/slew rate table, the HDC/MPU changes a slew rate in response to the temperature in the read/write processing.

  • Patent number: 7929973
Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing and balancing wireless access based on centralized information is provided. A request to provide service to a wireless client is received from a first access node in a plurality of access node. An access policy, applicable to the first access node, is selected from a plurality of stored policies. The stored policies may include a variety of rules, such as how many or which wireless clients may be serviced by an access node. A centralized manager, such as an AAA server, may perform the selection of the access policy. A determination is made as to whether to allow the first access node to provide service to the wireless client based on the selected access policy. A message that instructs the first access node whether to provide or deny service to the wireless client is transmitted to the first access node.

  • Patent number: 7885649
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for efficiently managing the storage of e-mail message information for a mobile station are described. In one illustrative example, a plurality of e-mail messages are received by the mobile station through a wireless network and stored in memory. If a size of the e-mail messages reaches a predetermined limit of the memory, e-mail message bodies of some of the e-mail messages (e.g. relatively “old” e-mails) are automatically deleted from the memory while e-mail message headers of the e-mail messages are retained. E-mail message headers of e-mail messages having deleted e-mail message bodies may still be visually displayed in a list at the mobile station. Subsequently, if a user selection of one of these e-mail messages in the list is identified, an e-mail message body of the e-mail message is requested by the mobile station and received from a server through the wireless network.

  • Patent number: 7869152
Abstract: Techniques are provided for identifying the servo sectors in a track on a data storage device. A data storage device identifies the servo sectors in a track by reading distributed index bits from multiple servo sectors in a track. The data storage device analyzes only one index bit from each servo sector to identify the index of a track. In some embodiments, the index of a track can be identified after examining the index bits stored in a particular number of consecutive servo sectors, even in the presence of errors. The index bits in each track can have an error tolerance with a minimum Hamming distance greater than one. In other embodiments, a data storage device compares a sliding window of the index bits read from the servo sectors to all possible N-bit vectors that exist within a pattern of the index bits stored on a track.

  • Patent number: 7856236
Abstract: Dynamic and current information is provided regarding a wireless device's entry into or exit from a geographically defined “watched” area. An area watcher application monitors preconfigured wireless devices entry/exit into preconfigured watched areas. The watched areas may watch for any/all subscribers, or for select, preconfigured subscribers listed in an appropriate table or database. Provision of location information is triggered by a wireless subscriber's entry, exit or changing between designated ‘watched’ areas or locations. Continuous polling may be used, or the mobile device itself or network element may be triggered to push its own location upon notification of its entry into or out of watched areas from an area watcher. A third party may be notified when a wireless user enters an area surrounding their retail store, and be sent a message such as “sale inside”, or “Your rentals are overdue”, on their wireless device.
