Abstract: An inband signaling modem communicates digital data over a voice channel of a wireless telecommunications network. An input receives digital data. An encoder converts the digital data into audio tones that synthesize frequency characteristics of human speech. The digital data is also encoded to prevent voice encoding circuitry in the telecommunications network from corrupting the synthesized audio tones representing the digital data. An output then outputs the synthesized audio tones to a voice channel of a digital wireless telecommunications network.

Abstract: A system and a call forwarding manager device for providing Internet telephony to a subscriber's premises via the subscriber's Internet connection, facilitated by the subscriber's analog telephone connection. Incoming analog telephone calls are received by the call forwarding manager connected to the subscriber's analog telephone line, which responds by generating a request for service from a voice gateway, which may be remotely located. The voice gateway then generates an Internet telephone connection from the voice gateway to an Internet protocol telephone owned by the subscriber, and then connects the analog telephone call via the voice gateway to the Internet protocol telephone via the subscriber's Internet connection.
Abstract: A distributed intelligence conferencing system is disclosed, having a plurality of conferencing nodes to connect groups of participants to a conference. Each of the conferencing nodes provides for the connection of one or more participants to the conference. Each node includes a DSP for distributed signal processing, eliminating the need for a central processor.
Abstract: Effective bandwidth of a communication link is determined in a heterogeneous, packet switched network between a source and a destination, where effective bandwidth is defined as the actual available bandwidth between the server and the client, minus the overhead of the various network protocols used to transmit the data. The method includes maintaining a database of bandwidth parameters indexed by destination address, and using the database when setting a communication channel.
Abstract: A method, system and apparatus for internetworking WWAN and WLAN are disclosed. More specifically, a method, system, and apparatus for a mobile station to sense and select a WLAN or a WWAN are disclosed. A mobile station may communicate according to an 802.xx wireless local area network air interface protocol via WLAN logic or according to a wireless wide area network air interface protocol via WWAN logic. The mobile station detects RF energy in the 802.xx spectrum and, in response to the energy detection, determines whether there is an 802.xx WLAN capable of servicing the mobile station by performing a scanning operation. If there is an 802.xx WLAN capable of servicing the mobile station, the mobile station selects the WLAN logic so that it may communicate via an air interface. Under some embodiments, WWAN has information identifying the areas in which capable WLANs operate and the WWAN provisions the mobile station with at least a subset of such information.

Abstract: Communication traffic associated with one or more mobile terminals is monitored to efficiently manage allocated radio resources. A rate management technique dynamically adjusts allocated radio resources to increase or decrease the data rate capacity of allocated radio channels based on actual channel usage. In this manner, radio resources are more efficiently utilized because the amount of excess capacity allocated to individual subscribers is reduced. Monitoring communication traffic may also be used to determine whether additional radio channel resources are allocated to a given subscriber. For example, in a cdma2000 radio access network, subscribers are typically allocated fundamental radio channels and then assigned supplemental channels to access higher data rate services. By monitoring fundament channel traffic characteristics, such as the queue length or packet size of outgoing packet data, the radio access network can determine whether supplemental channel allocation is warranted.
Abstract: A hand-off notifying and controlling system of a mobile node is disclosed including a mobile node (MN) that transmits a registration request message. An old foreign agent (FA) provides a mobile IP service to the MN, before the hand-off takes place. A new FA provides a mobile IP service to the MN, after the hand-off takes place. A home agent (HA) generates and transmits a registration release message to the old FA, upon receipt of the registration request message from the MN via the new FA. When the MN is handed off, since the HA deletes the previous registration of the MN, registered in the old FA, the waste of memory resources and registration lock dead can be simply and effectively reduce or solved.
Abstract: Techniques for supporting multiple potentially overlapping wireless protocols with a single electronic system are disclosed. In the description that follows, the overlapping protocols are Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11 for wireless networking; however, other overlapping protocols can be supported in a similar manner. A transaction control policy and a collision map are provided to determine which protocol to enable/disable when a conflict arises. Based on the transaction control policy and the collision map, one or more transceivers that operate according to the wireless protocols can be selectively enabled/disabled to avoid actual conflicts.

Abstract: A system and method for enabling a node in a mobile wireless ad-hoc communications network to use a particular spreading code to spread a message to be transmitted to a destination node without having to provide information on the spreading code to the destination node in, for example, an RTS message, to thus improve the overall efficiency of the network. The system and method enables the node to select the spreading code based on the destination of that transmission message, along with other factors such as network prefix information, time of day, and provider information, to minimize destructive interference between the spread transmission messages transmitted by neighboring nodes in the network.
Abstract: A system for communicating telecommunication information includes a memory, packetization modules, and a telecommunication interface module. The memory stores subscriber profiles associating each of several subscribers with a telecommunication interface. The packetization modules receive data packets from a broadband network and extract telecommunication information associated with a subscriber from the data packets. The telecommunication interface module communicates the telecommunication information to a telecommunication network using a telecommunication interface associated with the subscriber.
Abstract: A system and method for prioritizing the transmission of packets in a wireless local area network. A station selects a packet from local priority queuing and identifies the priority bits of the packet. The station declares the priority of the selected packet based on the binary value of the priority bits. If the station detects that another station has selected a packet with a higher priority, then the station ceases to contend for transmission during the current transmission cycle.
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for parallel compression and decompression of a bitstream. For compression, the bitstream is separated into a plurality of components, and the components are encoded using a compression algorithm. Packets are then constructed from the encoded components. At least one packet is associated with each encoded component and comprises header information and encoded data. The packets are combined into a packetized encoded bitstream. For decompression, the packets are separated from the packetized encoded bitstream using the header information. The packets are then decoded in parallel using a decompression algorithm to recover the encoded data. The plurality of components are reconstructed from the recovered encoded data and combined to-recover the bitstream.

Abstract: A code division multiplexing system for a link between components of a satellite communications system is disclosed where, using spread spectrum techniques, channel blocks are each spread by a pre-assigned orthogonal chip-coded waveform. The pre-assigned orthogonal chip-coded waveforms are each preferably chosen according to the origin and destination of the channel block. The channel blocks are each spread over an intermediate frequency and then upconverted such that their spreading bandwidth is equal, or approximately equal, to the allocated bandwidth of the particular link through which they will be transmitted. The channel blocks are spread so they each have the same, or approximately the same, center frequency as the allocated frequency spectrum of the link.

Abstract: A first session is established for a first mobile access terminal on a first radio network controller via a first radio node. A first traffic channel is established between the first mobile access terminal and the first radio network controller. A first plurality of packets are sent and received over the first traffic channel. The first plurality of packets travel between a first radio node and the first radio network controller without passing through a second radio network controller. The first traffic channel is maintained as the first access terminal moves from a coverage area of the first radio node to a coverage area of a second radio node. A second plurality of packets travel between the second radio node and the first radio network controller without passing through another radio network controller.

Abstract: A system and method of managing a radio bearer in a mobile communication system is provided which releases an assigned radio bearer while maintaining Packet Data Protocol (PDP) Context information related to a subscriber's Packet Session. This improves efficiency of use of the radio bearer. Also, in a case in which a user desires a temporary service interruption, the PDP context is preserved. Thus, it is possible to prevent accrual of fees associated with undesired service, thereby decreasing overall fees to subscribers.
