  • Patent number: 4095994
Abstract: Finely divided, fluosilicate-treated silica, such as silica flatting agent for use in coating formulations, is prepared by blending in a dry, finely divided state, silica and divalent metal fluosilicate, notably magnesium fluosilicate. In a preferred embodiment, dry pellets of amorphous, precipitated silica and dry magnesium fluosilicate are milled together to produce the fluosilicate-treated flatting agent. • Patent number: 4095995
Abstract: To prevent the escape of water into the porous aggregate of light-weight concrete at the time of pumping, the individual particles of the additive, which, with cement slurry, forms a gel-like protective layer, which is scarcely permeable to water, for a period of time, and which facilitates a bond between the aggregate and the cement. The protective layer can be produced by spraying a solution, in particular an aqueous solution of the additive into the aggregate particles, which are heated to a temperature above the boiling point of the solvent, and by evaporating the solvent.

  • Patent number: 4090888
Abstract: In a two-stage process for producing black iron oxide pigments wherein an iron salt solution is alkalized in a first stage to precipitate about 55 to 70% of the iron, the solution is oxidized to convert the precipitate to goethite, the solution is further alkalized in a second stage to precipitate the balance of the iron, the precipitated iron II hydroxide is allowed to react with goethite to form magnetite, the improvement which comprises effecting the second stage in the presence of an inorganic ionic compound of at least one metal selected from the group consisting of copper, nickel, aluminum, chromium, titanium, zirconium and vanadium in about 0.05 to 5% calculated as metal based on the weight of the final pigment. • Patent number: 4086123
Abstract: Pigments are disclosed comprising zinc sulfide as a host containing in solid solution at least a sufficient amount of a metal sulfide additive or dopant to alter the color of the zinc sulfide. The dopant may comprise one or more certain metal sulfides but normally is present as a unitary sulfide, such as lithium sulfide, or preferably as a multiple sulfide, such as lithium indium sulfide and copper indium sulfide. Optionally, a binary metal compound dopant can include a metal oxide. The pigments may be prepared by encapsulating the host and dopant metal sulfides in vacuum to prevent introduction of oxides and then heating to an equilibrium temperature.
