    Abstract: It is highly desirable for tire treads to exhibit good traction characteristics such as good wet skid resistance. However, it has traditionally been very difficult to improve the traction characteristics of a tire without sacrificing rolling resistance and tread wear. The high performance segmented elastomers of this invention offer a unique combination of desirable characteristics for utilization in making tire tread compositions. For instance, the rubbery polymers of this invention can be made into tire treads which exhibit outstanding traction characteristics while maintaining good rolling resistance and tread durability.

    Abstract: A method for dispersing a second polymer within a first polymer is disclosed, the polymers being mutually miscible and when blended exhibit lower critical solution temperature (LCST) type behavior. The first and second polymers are blended together at a temperature for easy processing and then phase separated at a temperature above the LCST of the blended polymer pair. The phase separated polymers are then cooled to a temperature wherein the polymer pair become fixed in the phase separated state.

    Abstract: A novel thermoplastic resin polymer comprising a polyphenylene ether (POE) and a low molecular weight styrene polymer bonded to the PPE in an amount of from 0.1 to 5.0% by weight based on the PPE has been found to have excellent moldability and thermal stability properties, while maintaining the excellent properties inherent in PPE, such as transparency and heat resistance. The resin polymer can be prepared from a polyphenylene ether and a styrene monomer by polymerization in the absence of a radical polymerization initiator. When the novel thermoplastic resin polymer and a styrene polymer are blended into a composition, the composition is particularly excellent in physical properties, such as moldability, color tone, impact resistance, elongation and surface gloss.

    Abstract: A first reactor is used to graft polystyrene to a rubber-like polymer. A second reactor is used to obtain a mixture of styrene and polystyrene. The effluent from both the first and the second reactors are fed into a quiescent reaction zone where phase inversion occurs. The phase inverted material is fed into post inversion reactors to substantially complete the polymerization of the styrene monomer, and any unreacted styrene monomer is driven off to form the improved high-impact polystyrene.

    Abstract: This invention provides a normally tacky pressure-sensitive adhesive composition comprising (1) a radial teleblock copolymer having at least three monoalkenyl arene polymer blocks and a branched elastomeric conjugated diene polymer block, (2) a tackifying resin, and (3) from about 5 to about 20 parts by weight extending oil per 100 parts by weight of radial copolymer. The copolymer preferably has a molecular weight of about 180,000 to about 250,000, as expressed in polystyrene equivalent molecular weight units. The monoalkenyl arene polymer blocks preferably comprise from about 17% to about 23% by weight of the total molecular weight of the copolymer. The preferred polymer for the monoalkenyl arene block is polystyrene; the preferred polymer for the elastomeric conjugated diene block is polyisoprene.
