Patent number: 4838471Abstract: A hand held nailing device for use in starting, driving, and setting nails is composed of a hollow cylindrical barrel having a stepped diameter longitudinal bore. An abutment shoulder is formed by the intersection of first and second diameter portions of the longitudinal bore. A stepped diameter cylindrical ram is slidably received within the barrel. An annular stop face is formed by the intersection of a first smaller diameter portion and a second layer diameter portion of the cylindrical ram. A spring ball detent is utilized to retain a nail in the barrel by engaging the nail head. By striking the end of the ram, the nail will be driven into the desired location on a work surface until the stop face on the ram contacts the abutment shoulder within the barrel. By appropriately dimensioning the barrel and the ram, the device may be adapted for use with a variety of different sized nails.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1987Date of Patent: June 13, 1989Inventor: David Chiesa

Patent number: 4836299Abstract: A well casing of an elastic metal material is placed in concentric relationship with a casing of an inert material such as a suitable plastic. A penetrating cap piece is placed on the bottom end of the metallic casing. The two concentric casings are then driven into the earth in an area to be monitored for contamination, such driving action being achieved by a sonic oscillator which is attached to the top end of the metallic casing. Preferably, the sonic energy is provided at a frequency such as to effect resonant standing wave vibration of the metallic casing. Further, water may be injected down the casing so as to lubricate the earthen structure immediately below the cap to accelerate the penetration of the casing. When the casings have been driven to the desired depth, the metallic casing is withdrawn by lifting up thereon while continuing to apply sonic energy, leaving the casing of inert material in place such that earth samples can be periodically withdrawn from the well thus formed.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 1987Date of Patent: June 6, 1989Inventor: Albert G. Patent number: 4828047Abstract: This invention relates to a method and apparatus for collecting subsamples of soils to be tested for infestation and nutrient content. The apparatus includes a sampling tube which is mounted on a collecting wheel which is mounted on a frame. During operation, the apparatus is lifted off the ground. To take a sample, the apparatus is lowered such that the wheel makes contact with the ground. This causes the wheel to rotate, forcing the sampling probe into the ground. The sample empties into the interior of the wheel where it mixes. The mixed sample is later removed and boxed for testing.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1988Date of Patent: May 9, 1989Inventor: Charles M. Rogerson

Patent number: 4825960Abstract: Hydraulic hammers are useful for transmitting high impact blows to a tool for fracturing hard material. When two hammers are used in combination the impact blows delivered to a common tool by the hammers should be synchronized for maximum effectiveness. The subject synchronized hydraulic hammer arrangement includes a valve arrangement for alternately directing pressurized fluid to a variable volume chamber in each of a pair of hydraulic hammers to simultaneously retract a piston of each hydraulic hammer against the bias of pressurized gas in a gas chamber of each hydraulic hammer and exhausting the variable volume hydraulic chambers in response to at least one of the pistons reaching a predetermined position. The gas chambers are interconnected for equalizing the gas pressure therein. This arrangement of components provides synchronized movement of the pistons in an outward direction so that they simultaneously impact against the common tool.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1988Date of Patent: May 2, 1989Assignee: Molex IncorporatedInventor: John J. Patent number: 4825961Abstract: In a drilling device, a tool mounted in the device can be selectively switched from right-hand rotation to left-hand rotation. The tool can be connected to an output shaft on which two conical gear wheels are mounted in spaced relation so that they can be rotated in opposite directions around the output shaft. The teeth on the conical gear wheels face one another and are in meshed engagement with gear teeth on a drive shaft. A coupling part is slidably displaceably mounted on the output shaft and can be engaged with one or the other of the conical gear wheels. The coupling part is secured on the output shaft so that as it is rotated by one or the other conical gear wheels, in turn, it rotates the output shaft in the desired direction.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 1988Date of Patent: May 2, 1989Assignee: Hilti AktiengesellschaftInventors: Anton Neumaier, Hans-Jurgen Hoereth
