  • Patent number: 6796098
Abstract: A block has a finished surface that provides an attractive appearance. The block is relatively large in size, allowing the quick construction of a wall, such as a retaining wall, using the block. The block includes one or more lift and alignment devices in the block that allow the block to be lifted using a suitable lifting apparatus, such as a crane, forklift, backhoe, etc. The block includes one or more recessed portions in the bottom surface of the block positioned to receive the protruding lift and alignment device of a previously-laid block underneath, thereby helping to align the block with the previously-laid block. The block includes one or more voids that extend from the top surface to the bottom surface of the block, and that align with each other when the blocks are stacked into a wall, thereby allowing fill material to be placed in the voids to strengthen the wall. The preferred embodiments also include a wall system with various different blocks that may be used to build a wall.

  • Patent number: 6782667
Abstract: A support tower for large structures such as wind turbines generators, microwave structures, high voltage transmission lines or the like, constructed of telescopic sections with the lowermost section having an edge portion pivotally connected to a foundation to enable the tower sections to be transported to the site of installation. The tower sections are assembled at the installation site in a nested relationship, each within the adjacent lower tower section. The large load is mounted on the upper end of the uppermost tower section and the nested tower sections are then tilted upwardly to a vertical position. After the tower is tilted to its vertical position and securely connected to the foundation, the telescopic tower sections are vertically extended to position the load in a vertically elevated position.

  • Patent number: 6698153
Abstract: Face plates 11 and 12 of a hollow shape member 10 are abutted against face plates 21 and 22 of a hollow shape member 20. Grooves 18 formed to said face plates 11 and 12 at the abutted region receive projections 28 formed to said face plates 21 and 22. A connecting plate 14 orthogonal to said face plates 11 and 12 is provided to the hollow shape member 10. There is no connecting plate orthogonal to face plates 21 and 22 disposed on the end of the hollow shape member 20. Friction stir welding heat causes the face plate 21 (22) to move toward the thickness direction of hollow shape members 10 and 20, but such movement is suppressed by the groove 18 and projection 28. Thereby, the abutted region is welded flatly. Since the hollow shape member 20 requires no connecting plate corresponding to plate 14, the welded members are light in weight.
