  • Patent number: 4498221
Abstract: The disclosure embraces a method of and apparatus for mechanically stripping linear material such as strands or groups of glass filaments or fibers from plastic forming tubes wherein the packages are defective, incomplete, or "break-out" packages. A defective, incomplete or "break-out" package is disposed at a stripping station at which a tube deforming or collapsing member is engaged with a forming tube package to collapse the package so that the strand on the collapsed forming tube is loose or is a loose hank. The collapsed or deformed forming tube is withdrawn from the stripping station and a stripper member is engaged with the loose strand or hank of strand which is stripped from the forming tube as the forming tube is moved away from the stripping station.

  • Patent number: 4498220
Abstract: This invention is a method for pre-expanding a heat exchanger tube prior to its insertion into a tube sheet. A tubular mandrel having an elastic bladder sheath sealed at each end is inserted into the tube and positioned at the point where the tube is to be expanded. A die with an annular recess approximating the shape to which the tube is to be expanded is clamped around the outer surface of the tube, concentric to the mandrel. The elastic bladder is then pressurized with hydraulic fluid pumped through a passage in the mandrel, thereby deforming the tube outward so that it conforms to the recess in the die. A heat transfer enhancement treatment thereafter may be applied to the exterior of the tube between the expanded sections, without concern that it may crack off when the tube is installed in a tube sheet. In addition, the hydraulic pre-expansion process prevents or minimizes cracking of the tube which sometimes occurs when a tube is expanded to an equivalent diameter in a single operation.

  • Patent number: 4497104
Abstract: A method for making a hollow fiber separation device including the steps of forming an integral structure which comprises at least one tubular housing portion and an elongated chamber portion extending in elongated relation to the tubular housing portion and communicating with the housing portion adjacent opposed ends thereof. One provides an aperture in a central area of the elongated chamber and inserts hollow fibers for diffusion into the housing portion. One then provides closed ends to the housing portion and spins the structure on an axis between the ends, adding potting compound to the chamber portion through the aperture. Accordingly, the potting compound migrates radially outwardly through the chamber to the closed ends of the housing portion, to encase the ends of the hollow fibers in the potting compound.

  • Patent number: 4475275
Abstract: A method for producing a filled calender roll comprising a load carrying shaft portion and having thereon a cover portion made of paper or cloth or the like. The cover portion is made by subjecting a great number of annular fiber material sheets fitted on the shaft portion to a very strong compression in the axial direction of the roll. The method includes the step of making the sheets oversized in diameter with respect to the diameter of the shaft portion so that there is initially, in the assembling program, a space at the interface of the shaft portion and the cover portion. After the axial compression of the fiber material and under the influence of a vacuum created at the interface, the sheets are caused to fill the void between the cover portion and the shaft portion.

  • Patent number: 4471528
Abstract: An upholstery machine for the tufting of buttons within cushions wherein a needle picks up a string loop which is attached to a lower button and is then caused to penetrate the cushion. The needle is withdrawn and the string loop secured to an upper button. A button feeding mechanism is utilized which comprises an enlarged, elongated coil spring. The coil spring supports a single lower button with its attached loop of string at each coil of the spring thereby forming a row of the button assemblies. The inner end of the coil spring is attached to a power source which is to incrementally rotate the coil spring to discharge a single button assembly from the free outer end of the coil spring at a selected instant. The discharged button assembly is to be engaged with the needle. The power source includes appropriate gearing mechanism to reverse rotation of the coil spring to facilitate the loading of the coil spring with the button assemblies.

  • Patent number: 4471515
Abstract: Elongated hollow members or tubes frictionally engage the interior wall of a hollow corrugating roll or a hollow pressure roll of a single facer so as to minimize the elastic vibration thereof and thereby to minimize the noise developed and transmitted during the operation of the single facer. A plurality of such tubes of a given diameter are arranged circumferentially about the interior wall of the shell of a roll of a single facer in such manner that each of the tubes frictionally engages the interior wall and so that each of the tubes also engages the adjacent tubes on either side thereof, thereby providing an assembled structure in which the plurality of tubes resist the elastic deformation of the roll and the resultant elastic vibratiion and thereby reduce the noise level.

  • Patent number: 4470183
Abstract: A roll comprises a rotatable mantle portion and a non-rotating shaft portion and, connected to the shaft portion, means for roll deflection adjustment. These means comprise a bushing or the like mounted around the non-rotating shaft portion at one roll end and being, by means of a bearing, in radially force transmitting contact with the roll mantle portion. The bushing is pivotably connected to the shaft portion at a position between the bearing and a second bearing between the shaft portion and the mantle portion at a position more remote from the roll end. The bushing is provided with a device for altering radially the position of the first mentioned bearing with respect to the shaft portion by altering the angle setting of the bushing with respect to the roll shaft portion.

  • Patent number: 4457059
Abstract: A sealed heat pipe of uniform cross sectional profile from evaporator to condenser which includes a plurality of capillary channels communicating with a central channel by means of narrow re-entrant groove openings having convergent entrances. A two step method of fabrication includes extruding the re-entrant grooves, then drawing a mandrel through the virgin extrusion.

  • Patent number: 4453299
Abstract: A controlled deflection roll wherein the individual pressure or support elements thereof have operatively correlated thereto springs which act in addition to the pressure force exerted by the pressure or support elements. At the same time there are provided external pressing or contact devices which exert a predetermined pressing or contact force. These pressing devices, in the work position of the controlled deflection roll, bring about a force equilibrium in conjunction with the pressure or support elements and the springs.
