Abstract: A self-drilling fastener for attaching wood substrates to metal substrates comprises an elongate shank defining an axis, the shank having a first end and a second end. A drilling tip having a drill point and an axial length is formed at the first end. A broad head is formed at the second end. The shank includes a threaded portion and an unthreaded portion. The threaded portion axially extends from the drilling tip towards the head and includes helical threads and has an axial length, a root diameter, and a thread diameter. The length of the threaded portion is greater than the length of the drilling tip. The unthreaded portion axially extends from the threaded portion to the head and has an axial length and a diameter. The length of the unthreaded portion is substantially greater than the length of the threaded portion and the diameter of the unthreaded portion is smaller than the thread diameter of the threaded portion.

  • Patent number: 6905298
Abstract: A nut assembly is disclosed that will ensure that the shank of a bolt that features a measurable grip length will pass through the contact plane of adjoining members. The nut assembly also allows the desired compressive force in the adjoining members to be attained by using a telescopic feature of the nut to allocate additional thread action for the bolt, enabling the bolt to be drawn into the nut further than what would be allowed by a standard nut. The adaptability of the nut assembly can eliminate the need for washers or shims to adjust the shank penetration of the bolt. The nut assembly is useful for application in which the specified thread length and the grip length of the bolt is incompatable with the abutment thickness of the adjoining members.

  • Patent number: 6729607
Abstract: A cable release anchor having an improved breakaway post design with a cable release feature. The cable release anchor includes upper and lower anchor portions that are readily separable from one another during an impact. A bearing plate is retained within the end of each of the upper and lower anchor portions, and each bearing plate has a bearing surface that is oriented at an acute angle with the vertical when installed in the ground. Each of these bearing plates contains a U-shaped cutout. When the upper and lower anchor portions are joined, the cutouts form an opening through which an end of the tension cable is disposed. An impact to the upper anchor portion readily releases the upper post section from the lower post section and frees the cable. The cable release anchor provides positive anchorage to react to tensile loads on a rail member to redirect a vehicle impacting along the length of the terminal or guardrail.

  • Patent number: 6712542
Abstract: A releasable clampband apparatus and an associated method gently alter clampband tension, such that clampband tension may be reduced after the need for high clampband tension is no longer present, but before clampband separation. Thus, equipment or electronics contained in elements joined by the clampband are protected from excessive shock upon clampband separation. The releaseable clampband apparatus includes a discontinuous clampband having at least one opening. A connector is fixed to one side of the clampband opening and extends across the opening. A housing is fixed to the other side of the clampband opening and has a cavity surrounding at least a portion of the connector. A moveable positioning assembly is at least partially disposed within the housing cavity and is connected to the connector such that movement of the assembly with respect to the housing alters the clampband tension by varying the size of the opening.
