Patent number: 7821957Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed that enable a first telecommunications endpoint to ensure that a second endpoint is receiving the first endpoint's packet stream transmissions with a satisfactory waveform quality. When the second endpoint receives the packet stream, it decodes the media waveform from the stream, encodes the waveform back into a second packet stream, and transmits some or all of the packets in the second stream back to the first endpoint. The first endpoint then decodes the received waveform in the second stream and compares it to the original waveform transmitted to the second endpoint. Based on the comparison, the first endpoint adjusts the value of a quality indication, and provides the quality indication to its user and to the second endpoint. Advantageously, the user at the second endpoint is able to determine whether the received waveform is, in fact, close enough to the waveform that the first endpoint's user intended to be received and understood.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 2007Date of Patent: October 26, 2010Assignee: Avaya, Inc.Inventors: Eric John Diethorn, Parameshwaran Krishnan, Jean Meloche, Balaji Sathyanarayana Rao, Jay M. Patent number: 7801021Abstract: A technique that enables a source endpoint of a tunnel employing encapsulation to determine if a destination endpoint of the tunnel is reachable or unreachable. The technique issues “keepalive” packets that are returned to the source endpoint by a reachable destination endpoint. The source endpoint of the tunnel constructs a keepalive packet containing a return-keepalive packet, encapsulates it and forwards it over the tunnel to the destination endpoint. The destination endpoint, in turn, decapsulates the packet to yield the return-keepalive packet and forwards the return-keepalive packet preferably over the tunnel towards the source endpoint. Upon arrival at the source endpoint, the return-keepalive packet is processed. By receiving the return-keepalive packets the source end-point concludes the destination endpoint is reachable. After a predetermined number of return-keepalive packets have not been received, the source endpoint concludes that the destination endpoint is unreachable.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 2002Date of Patent: September 21, 2010Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Nikolaos Triantafillis, Robert J. Patent number: 7778271Abstract: A method for communicating instructions and data between a processor and external devices are provided. The method makes use of a channel interface as the primary mechanism for communicating between the processor and a memory flow controller. The channel interface provides channels for communicating with processor facilities, memory flow control facilities, machine state registers, and external processor interrupt facilities, for example. These channels may be designated as blocking or non-blocking. With blocking channels, when no data is available to be read from the corresponding registers, or there is no space available to write to the corresponding registers, the processor is placed in a low power “stall” state. The processor is automatically awakened, via communication across the blocking channel, when data becomes available or space is freed. Thus, the channels of the present invention permit the processor to stay in a low power state.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 2005Date of Patent: August 17, 2010Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Michael N. Patent number: 7760658Abstract: A communication line is installed in a network by automating a design phase and a configuration phase for the service and by automating failure recovery in either of the phases. In the design phase, an optimal route for the communication line is found, and the network components are provisioned and assigned. If the assigned network components are not available or can not be validated, the components causing the failure are marked, and the design phase is retried without the marked components. After the design phase, the configuration phase begins. The circuit design is tested against actual network components. If the test is passed, the actual network is configured according to the circuit design and the circuit is activated. If there is a network component failure during the configuration phase, the good route elements in the design are released while the failed network components are marked. The design phase is retried.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 2007Date of Patent: July 20, 2010Assignee: Level 3 Communications, LLCInventors: Richard L. Wall, Gary L. Ryczek, James A. Loukatos, Alex J. Patent number: 7751412Abstract: New virtual circuits (VCs) may be configured by a router as they are brought up, eliminating any need for preconfiguration. Specific ports may be set up to autoconfigure (and certain ports may be excluded for security or other reasons). When a packet from an unconfigured VC arrives, the router may then determine if the source VC it is a valid VC, such as whether it is in a valid range and unique to the interface. The Operating System may then send a message configuring the VC once it has been determine it is valid. The configuration used may be one that is part of a standard template. The next time a packet comes in from the VC, it may then be handled in accordance with the template.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2003Date of Patent: July 6, 2010Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: George Manuelian, Vince Mammoliti, Charles Yager, Kumar Reddy, Megan Minghua Bao, Ramesh R

Patent number: 7751448Abstract: Symbol timing synchronization in OFDM communication systems where multiple wireless terminals communicate with a single base station is described. Base station transmitter and receiver symbol timing is fixed. Each wireless terminal operates to independently adjust its transmitter timing. Transmitter timing synchronization at the wireless terminal is slaved to the terminal's receiver timing synchronization. Each wireless terminal first corrects its receiver symbol timing based on a signal received from the base station. The wireless terminal then adjusts its transmitter symbol timing as a function of its receiver symbol timing. When the receiver symbol timing is to be advanced or delayed by some amount, the transmitter symbol timing is also advanced or delayed, respectively, by the same, or substantially the same, amount. Symbol timing adjustment can be made by adding or deleting digital samples from the first or last symbol in a dwell.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 2002Date of Patent: July 6, 2010Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Rajiv Laroia, Junyi Li, Vladimir Parizhsky

Patent number: 7742410Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for using gap packets to create a bandwidth buffer over which packets can be sent to reduce or eliminate overflow conditions. One implementation sends a series of packets from a first device to a second device, the series of packets including interspersed information packets and gap packets. The first device determines when to insert the gap packets into the series of packets, and the gap packets received by the second device are dropped. The determination of when to insert one of the gap packets into the series of packets may be based on an occupancy level of a buffer, such as, but not limited to comparing it to a predetermined or variable threshold value. Also, the rate of sending gap packets and/or the size of the gap packets may be varied to adjust the size of bandwidth buffer created by the gap packets.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 2002Date of Patent: June 22, 2010Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Leonid Goldin, Michael Lewis Takefman
