  • Patent number: 4972319
Abstract: A global mapping system which organizes mapping data into a hierarchy of successive magnitudes or levels for presentation of the mapping data with variable resolution, starting from a first or highest magnitude with lowest resolution and progressing to a last or lowest magnitude with highest resolution. The idea of this hierarchical structure can be likened to a pyramid with fewer stones or "tiles" at the top, and where each successive descending horizontal level or magnitude contains four times as many "tiles" as the level or magnitude directly above it. The top or first level of the pyramid contains 4 tiles, the second levle contains 16 tiles, the third contains 64 tiles and so on, such that the base of a 16 magnitude or level pyramid would contain 4 to the 16th power or 4,294,967,296 tiles. This total includes "hyperspace" which is later clipped or ignored. Digital data corresponding to each of the separate data base tiles is stored in the database under a unique filename.

  • Patent number: 4787038
Abstract: In a machine translation system, a translated-sentence possibility corresponding to an input original sentence is obtained by a translation processing section with reference to a dictionary, and is displayed to be divided by a division display control section into processing units in the translation processing section. When some portions of the original sentence have other translated-word possibilities in addition to the displayed translated-word possibilities, display control is performed by an identifying display control section so that the portions having other translated-word possibilities can be distinguished from portions having no such other translated-word possibilities and that classes of portions having the other translated-word possibilities are identified. Classes of the other translated-word possibilities are displayed in accordance with a predetermined priority order.

  • Patent number: 4739478
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for restructuring one or more debt obligations issued in the form of interest-bearing bonds into a serial issue of zero coupon bonds. The data processing system evaluates the cash flows and present value of an existing bond, then creates a serial issue of zero coupon bonds which provides pretax cash flows equivalent to those of the existing bond and determines a table of call yields for the serial issue of zero coupon bonds to replace the table of call prices for the old bond. The system evaluates the after-tax cash flows, and determines the after-tax present value to the issuer of the existing bond and the serial issue of zero coupon bonds. The system periodically determines the potential savings from calling the zero coupon bond issue, or selected bonds from the series, and refinancing the debt at the prevailing interest rates.
