  • Patent number: 5240454
Abstract: A chicken leg processor includes a transfer device for removing the lower portion of halved birds from a shackle conveyor, and delivering them to a line along which the hip joints are partially cut through. While the legs remain suspended from the line, the back is then inverted, and is moved at a speed different from the legs, to remove the legs from the back. Thereafter, the legs are separated into thighs and drumsticks.

  • Patent number: 5237893
Abstract: A fastener drive tool for applying a rotational torque to a threaded fastener for driving the fastener into or out of a workpiece. The drive tool has an elongated shaft portion with a free end which is engageable with a recess formed in the fastener. Alternating merging concave and convex partially-cylindrical surfaces are formed on the outside of the shank towards the free end of the drive tool. The axes of curvature of the concave and convex partially-cylindrical surfaces are generally parallel to one another. The drive tool has at least one interlobular fastener retention piece attached between two convex partially-cylindrical surfaces which engage a corresponding convex partially-cylindrical surface formed in the fastener recess. The interlobular fastener retention piece releasably retains the fastener on the drive tool when the drive tool is engaged with the recess formed in the fastener and prevents wobbling of the fastener when it is driven by the drive tool.

  • Patent number: 5181439
Abstract: Described is a combination of fasteners and tools which visually communicate their respective sizes to the user so clearly that by merely glancing at these objects a tool matching the fastener or a fastener that matches the tool can readily be selected for use. This beneficial result is achieved by visually coding the fasteners of different sizes either by a pattern or preferably by color so that all fasteners of a given size bear one distinguishing visual appearance, all fasteners of another given size bear another distinguishing visual appearance, and so on.

  • Patent number: 5176563
Abstract: A method and device for separating the legs from a carcass of slaughtered poultry in which the carcass is positioned on the rear side, legs pointing upwards, relative to the cutters, a groin incision is made between each leg and the carcass at the side of the leg facing the carcass, and each leg is dislocated at the hip joint by pressing out each leg relative to the carcass. After dislocating the hip, a caudal hip incision is made in the remaining tissue connection between each leg and the carcass, after the two parts of each dislocated hip joint are moved a certain distance apart by applying a force acting on the hip joint ball of each hip joint, pushing the hip joint ball away from the hip joint socket prior to making the hip incision, and the legs are pulled off the carcass, essentially in the lengthwise direction of the back bone and away from the tail part.

  • Patent number: 5176049
Abstract: This invention relates to hand tools in general, and more particularly to a gripping plier or wrench having compound leverage gripping power not found in the tools most commonly sold and used today. This tool further has constantly parallel jaws at any adjustment position within its capacity. When constructed as a plier, it grips the workpiece with better than a 10:1 leverage ratio which makes it practically impossible to slip without the operator releasing its grip. When constructed as a wrench for turning nuts, bolts, and fittings, its gripping power holds the workpiece so tightly that there is no possibility of rounding off the corners or otherwise damaging it during the turning operation. Additionally, if a hexagonal object has been previously damaged and has rounded off corners, the wrench version of this tool, in any of its configurations, can effectively grip and turn such an object, a feat that the most commonly used open-end, box-end, or adjustable wrenches cannot perform to any satisfactory degree.

  • Patent number: 5176050
Abstract: A tool for the application of selected torque to the polygonal head of a bolt, to a nut or to an analogous component has a first portion which is a snug fit on the polygonal part of the component, and a polygonal second portion which can be engaged and rotated by a wrench. The material of the tool is more readily deformable than the material of the component and the material of the wrench so that the wrench deforms the second portion and/or the component deforms the first portion of the tool when the component offers a selected resistance to further rotation, i.e., in response to the application of a selected torque to the component. The first portion can be bonded or molded to the torque-receiving part of the component to be rotated, and the second portion can be coated with a film of a color different from that of the second portion to facilitate visual determination of the condition of the second portion.

  • Patent number: 5173076
Abstract: Parts of animals and edible fowl, such as poultry thighs (26) are deboned by loading the parts onto a series of carrier trays (55), with the thigh bones (27) extending transversely to the direction of movement of the carrier trays (55) along a processing path (43). Compound pusher assemblies (52) each engage one end of the thigh bones (27) and urge the thigh bones (27) longitudinally through apertures (64) formed in stripper discs (63) positioned adjacent the rear edges (57) of the carrier trays (55). As the thigh bones (27) pass through the apertures (64), the thigh bones (27) are engaged by stripper edges (66), which scrape the thigh meat (31) from the thigh bones (27) as the thigh bones (27) are progressively urged through the apertures (64) of the stripper discs (63).

  • Patent number: 5172613
Abstract: Power tongs and the back-ups are disclosed which have improved means for gripping pipe and tubular members. Torque is applied and held with minimum damage to the pipe or tubular member. A plurality of gripping assemblies, each consisting of a pivoted jaw having a friction surface, are mounted on a drag ring. Rotational resistance is selectively applied to the drag ring to cause the jaws to make contact with or be released from the pipe prior to any torque being applied to the pipe. Various modifications of the gripping assemblies are disclosed to provide better gripping contact with the pipe.

  • Patent number: 5168781
Abstract: A drive socket for driving a fastener having a head into a workpiece, and constructed according to the teachings of the present invention, comprises a movable member having a socket and a sleeve having a bottom end. The movable or socket member is capable of axial movement with respect to the surrounding sleeve. An actuable member connects the movable member to the sleeve. The socket member is offset a predetermined distance upwardly from the bottom end of the sleeve. The actuable member positively restricts the axial movement of the movable member with respect to the sleeve so as to permit changing of the distance between the socket and the bottom end of the sleeve from a distance somewhat larger than the axial thickness of the head of the fastener to a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the head of the fastener in order to fully seat the fastener within the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 5167172
Abstract: An automated container closure opener for screw-type bottle or container caps, lids, caps, covers and the like comprising a housing having a base portion and a relatively vertically movable top portion operatively connected thereto by at least one telescoping shaft. First motorized drive means are provided for actuating the telescoping shaft so as to vertically move the top portion of the housing relative to the base portion, and second motorized drive means are provided for rotatably actuating a bottle cap engagement member which depends from the top portion of the opener housing. Circuit means serve to actuate the first motorized drive means to lower the bottle cap engagement member from an inoperative position adjacent the top portion of the housing into engaging contact with the cap of a bottle and to then deactuate the first motorized drive means and actuate the second motorized drive means to at least partially remove the cap from the bottle.

  • Patent number: 5157998
Abstract: An attachment assembly for a multi-spindle screw machines which provides positive part recovery and increased back-machining capabilities. The attachment is fully integrated in the host multi-spindle machine to complete cut-off, back-machining operations, and part recovery within the cycle time of the host machine. The configuration and construction of the attachment assembly provides reliable operation with minimum adjustment and simplified trouble-shooting through a central processing display panel. The integration of the components also simplifies tool changes and adjustments for production of different parts. As a result, the cut-off and back-machining are accomplished within the limited cycle time of the multi-spindle machine while recovery of the finished part ensures diversion to the proper storage bin prior to return to the start position to pick-off the next production part.
