The composition includes a thermosetting resin having a content of 10-25% by weight (and having trace amounts of a promoter such as an amine or amide and optionally having trace amounts of a stabilizer such as cobalt naphthenate) for use with a pre-mixed dry powder comprising the remainder. The pre-mixed dry powder includes an aggregate such as silica having a content of 75-90% by weight, a pigment such as titanium dioxide or iron oxide having a content of 0.25-2% by weight, a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide having a content of 0.1-4% by weight, and a thickener consisting of organoclay having a content of 1/2-6% by weight.
Abstract: Improved polymer gels for oil reservoir permeability control have a continuous, cross-linked polymer phase having a relatively low density of cross-linking with domains of clustered, high density cross-linking. The clustered high density cross-linkings contribute to the gel's shear stability and gel strength while the continuous, low density phase contributes to good injectivity. Gels of this kind are produced by cross-linking a base polymer with a relatively low density of cross-linking sites with a reinforcing polymer having a higher cross-linking site density. Suitable polymers have ligand groups which are capable of forming coordination cross-linkages with polyvalent metals, especially chromium and include polyacrylamides as base polymers and polyacrylic acids as reinforcing polymers.
Abstract: This invention concerns a process for the preparation of large surface area, finely divided precipitated calcium carbonate which comprises introducing carbon dioxide into an aqueous slurry of greater than about five weight percent calcium hydroxide containing an anionic organopolyphosphonate polyelectrolyte, starting the introduction at a temperature above about 7.degree. C. and below about 18.degree. C., continuing the introduction until calcite precipitation is substantially complete and adding a quantity of polybasic acid to the slurry in an amount greater than about 0.3% by weight of the precipitated calcium carbonate. This invention also concerns said large surface area, finely divided precipitated calcium carbonate which has been coated with a fatty acid derivative and polymeric compositions which contain such coated calcium carbonate.

Abstract: The invention relates to foundry moulding compositions useful for producing moulds for the manufacture of metal castings wherein the moulds are capable of giving castings with good surface finish without the need for conventional separate blacking applications. A foundry moulding composition of the invention comprises refractory material such as sand, alkali phenol-formaldehyde resole resin solution, carbonifiable material such as styrenated phenol, and an effective amount of an organic ester for hardening the composition. In another embodiment, the invention is a binder composition comprising alkali phenol-formaldehyde resole resin solution and carbonifiable material capable of being hardened by reaction with organic ester. In another embodiment, the invention is a curing additive for a foundry binder comprising carbonifiable material and liquid ester such as gamma-butyrolactone, and the like.

Abstract: Copolymers comprising ethylene, alpha-olefin, and olefinic chlorosilane or olefinic hydrocarbon halide, and method of preparing copolymers. The copolymers may be in the form of statistical copolymers, or may be formed of first and second segments. The copolymers are useful in fiberglass and rubber compositions, and for forming graft and block polymers. The copolymers may be cross-linked to form nodular copolymers. The nodular copolymers are particularly useful as lube oil additives.

Abstract: Bitumen-polyolefin compositions, e.g. for use as binders in paving compositions, are stabilized by an emulsifier system comprising a polyethylene wax terminally functionalized with acidic groups and having a polymeric main chain structure which is compatible with the polyolefin of the dispersed phase of the binder. In a preferred embodiment, the emulsifier system also includes an inorganic metal compound which will react chemically with the terminal functional groups of the polyethylene wax. Especially preferred is maleated polyethylene wax (as the polyethylene wax) and ferric oxide (as the inorganic metal compound). The emulsifier system forms a sheath of inorganic material around the dispersed polyolefin droplets, to stabilize them and to hinder their floatation to the surface of the binder composition.

Abstract: Extrudable anti-static polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compositions include a quaternary ammonium compound as an anti-static agent, and a barium-cadmium-zinc component as a stablizing agent. The barium-cadmium-zinc component has been found to be critically required in order for the compositions to be processable (e.g., via extrusion) while retaining their desired anti-static characteristics. Shaped articles (e.g., floor mats, door strippings, and the like) may be formed from the compositions of this invention, and use in environments where static-charge dissipation is desired (e.g., computer rooms, hospitals, and the like).
