Abstract: In the dynamic access priority method, priority classes with different backoff delays are used to prioritize random access over shared channels and to reduce collision in the presence of a surge of random access requests. Service class information for a plurality of service classes is stored at user equipment. The service class information for a service class includes at least one of a maximum and a minimum back off value; the maximum back off value being indicative of a maximum back off interval and the minimum back off value being indicative of a minimum back off interval. At least one of a maximum and a minimum back off value is determined based on a selected service class of the user equipment, and a back off interval is determined based on the determined back off value. The back off interval indicates a period of time the user equipment waits before the user equipment attempts a transmission.

  • Patent number: 7729355
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for handling a request by a first communication device 11 connected to a network of a communication system to establish a packet switched session with a second, wireless communication device 12, which session requires the second communication device 12 to be connected to a network which enables the establishment of the session. In order to enable an enhanced handling of such a request, it is proposed that it is first determined whether the second communication device 12 is currently connected to such a network. In case it is determined that the second device 12 is not connected to such a network, a corresponding indication is transmitted to the first device 11. The user of the first device 11 is then informed via the first device 11 that the requested session cannot be established. The invention relates equally to a communication system enabling such a method and to corresponding elements 11, 13 of such a system.

  • Patent number: 7724682
Abstract: In accordance with a specific aspect of the present invention, a compressed video stream, such as an MPEG-2 video stream, is received by a transport demultiplexor, synchronized, parsed into separate packet types, and written to buffer locations external the demultiplexor. Adaptation field is handled by a separate parser. In addition, primary elementary stream data can be handled by separate primary elementary stream parsers based upon the packet identifier of the primary elementary stream. Video packets can be parsed based upon stream identifier values. Specific packets of data are stored in one or more system memory or video memory buffers by an output controller based upon allocation table information. Private data associated with specific elementary streams or packet adaptation fields are repacketized, and written to an output buffer location. In specific implementations, the hardware associated with the system is used to acquire the data stream without any knowledge of the specific protocol of the stream.

  • Patent number: 7720081
Abstract: An open architecture platform bypasses data from the facilities of a telecommunications carrier, e.g. an incumbent local exchange carrier, by distinguishing between voice and data traffic, and handling voice and data traffic separately. An SS7 gateway receives and transmits SS7 signaling messages with the platform. When signaling for a call arrives, the SS7 gateway informs a control server on the platform. The control server manages the platform resources, including the SS7 gateway, tandem network access servers (NASs) and modem NASs. A tandem NAS receives the call over bearer channels. The control server determines whether the incoming call is voice traffic or data traffic, by the dialed number, and instructs the tandem NAS how to handle the call. Voiced traffic is transmitted to a switch for transmission from the platform. Data traffic is terminated at a modem NAS, where it is converted into a form suitable for a data network, such as a private data network or an Internet services provider (ISP).

  • Patent number: 7664052
Abstract: A master node transmits a probe packet for checking a condition of a network in a ring in both directions thereof to detect the occurrence of a fault on the ring. A slave node increments a hop count included in the received probe packet, transmits it to an adjacent node configuring the ring, and transmits a hop count report packet to the master node. The master node detects a fault on the ring based upon a fact that the master node does not receive the probe packet transmitted by itself. Further, the master node detects the occurrence of multiple faults and the recovery of at least one of the multiple faults based upon the sum of maximum values of hop counts in the hop count report packets received from both directions of the ring and transmits a packet for prompting the update of the database for packet transfer.

  • Patent number: 7623581
Abstract: A method for recovering a clock from a serial data stream for use in producing “eye” diagram measurements includes determining an initial recovered clock from the serial data stream based upon transition edges. Time interval error values are then determined as a function of the transition edges and corresponding initial recovered clock times. Time interval error values are interpolated for initial recovered clock times not associated with transition edges to produce a complete set of time interval error values. The complete set of time interval error values are lowpass filtered to produce a filtered set of time interval error values. The clock for the serial data stream is reconstructed from the filtered set of time interval error values.

  • Patent number: 7593377
Abstract: A clusterhead of a tree-based, mobile ad hoc network includes a mobile IP proxy resource for registering a received binding update request from a mobile ad hoc router within the network, creating a first mobile IP tunnel with the mobile ad hoc router, sending a second binding update request to a remote home agent of the mobile ad hoc router, and initiating a second mobile IP tunnel between the clusterhead and the home agent. If a packet received from the mobile ad hoc router specifies a destination determined as reachable within the mobile ad hoc network, use of the second mobile IP tunnel is minimized by outputting the packet toward the destination according to the mobile ad hoc routing protocol. If the packet is not reachable within the mobile ad hoc network, the packet is forwarded via the second mobile IP tunnel to ensure packet transmission is topologically correct.

  • Patent number: 7586922
Abstract: A Packet Data Services Node (PDSN) optionally frames user data from an Application IP packet received from a public data network (e.g., the Internet) into a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) frame, and encapsulates the Application IP packet or PPP frame data into one or more Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) frames for further transmission within a wireless communication network. The PDSN additionally inserts into each GRE frame, Application IP packet fragmentation information that indicates whether the Application IP packet or PPP frame terminates in the associated GRE frame. Other network nodes, such as a Packet Control Facility (PCF) or Base Station Controller (BSC), may interpret the fragmentation information and ascertain the boundaries of Application IP packets or PPP frames, using this information to improve network efficiency.

  • Patent number: 7583675
Abstract: An apparatus and method for multiplexing voice packets to an ATM cell in an ATM network. Voice packets received from voice users to which voice calls have been connected are stored in a queue. An output rate controller determines a maximum number of ATM cells that can be transmitted during a predetermined control period according to information about the voice calls. When a voice packet is received at the queue, or when a predetermined operation period is reached, the output rate controller compares a number of ATM cells transmitted during the control period with the maximum number of ATM cells. If the number of transmitted ATM cells is less than the maximum number of ATM cells, the output rate controller requests a multiplexer to output an ATM cell. Then the multiplexer forms an ATM cell from stored voice packets by multiplexing.
