  • Patent number: 4932979
Abstract: A high performance methanol fuel is described. In the present invention, the methanol fuel is formulated with approximately 3-15% high purity water, resulting in an aqueous fuel whose properties are independent of subsequent condensation of water from the environment. A low concentration dye, in the range of 0.0005 to 0.0020 weight percent, is utilized to impart color to the liquid fuel. In the preferred embodiment, arazine yellow, manufactured by Chem Serv is utilized, and has no noticable effect on fuel properties. A low concentration of alkali metal salts, such as sodium or lithium carbonate, or a low concentration of alkaline earth salts such as calcium or strontium acetate, in the range of 0.0005 to 0.001 weight percent is utilized as a flame colorant. Improved lubricity of the methanol fuel of the present invention is achieved by utilizing a flourosurfactant of about 0.05 percent by weight. In the preferred embodiment, ZONYL manufactured by DUPONT, is utilized.

  • Patent number: 4929373
Abstract: In the preparation of an overbased calcium sulfonate, it has been found that adding the calcium hydroxide during the carbonation reaction reduced solid waste. An initial charge of 15 to 25 wt % of the total calcium hydroxide is added to initiate the carbonation reaction. The balance is added by a process whereby calcium hydroxide concentration remains low in the reaction admixture to reduce amorphous calcium carbonate residence time. In the process, calcium hydroxide is added in amounts whereby the molar ratio of carbon dioxide to the sum of calcium hydroxide and calcium oxide is about 0.8.

  • Patent number: 4915706
Abstract: A process and apparatus for producing coal-water fuel comprises crushing and primary grinding of the coal to form a liberated granular material, multiple stage froth flotation of the granulated coal to reduce its ash content and pyritic sulfur content. The resulting product from the froth flotation operations is dewatered to yield a product having a selected solids content. A stable slurry is then produced from the product by establishing a selected particle size distribution. Refuse accumulated from the various previous steps is collected, dewatered and the water is clarified for use in the process steps.
